LET'S TALK HONESTLY ABOUT BUYING BLACK ONLY! (495 hits)

Family's commitment could hold key to community prosperity
BY CHERYL V. JACKSON Chicago Sun Times
Consumers worldwide might be tightening their belts, but Maggie Anderson's mind is black with plots to spend.

Her Oak Park family is publicly committing to a year of buying from black-owned business and supporting black professionals exclusively, starting Jan. 1.

These days, she's searching frantically for black-owned firms for staple items and services, until she and her husband, John, can broaden their awareness of businesses and professionals.

That means she's got to find a new dry cleaner. She's looking for a place to gas up the family's two cars. And locating black McDonald's franchises is a must. "My girls love the fries," she said of her two daughters.

Her family's efforts will be followed by a team of college researchers as part of a project called the Ebony Experiment to determine the impact of the Andersons' spending if extrapolated to a larger portion of black America.

Proponents of buy-black initiatives say they are key to community prosperity, as studies indicate black-owned enterprises are more likely to hire black employees. Those firms are likely to sponsor community programs and their owners participate in institutions such as churches that provide community services, said Steven Rogers, director of the Kellogg Entrepreneurial Practice Center at Northeastern University's Graduate School of Management.

Book to detail experience

"It's not just a simple effort for the sake of show and a superficial statement about racial pride," said Rogers, a project adviser. "It comes from the desperate need for us to have a role in our own economic destiny."

The Andersons, who plan to spend about $10,000 a month next year, will move their checking account to and refinance home and car loans with black organizations. They'll seek black-owned firms to do home improvement projects and handle vacations they've put off until next year.

And they want black America to watch as they discover companies with which to do business.

The couple -- she's a lawyer; he's a financial adviser -- will blog and post videos at EbonyExperiment.com to document their spending, and invite people to offer their own accounts of shopping black.

"If we can get 3 percent of us to commit to doing this, that will translate into millions and millions of dollars going into our community," Maggie Anderson said.

Coming out of the project will be a database of black-owned businesses and professionals and a university-based study. Social commentator Michael Eric Dyson is on the team and will pen the foreword for a book detailing the experience.

"They have decided to put their money where their mouth is and forge connections within their own community to strengthen economic and social networks and ties that bind us together," said Dyson, a Georgetown University professor. "Hopefully, this will inspire others to take up the call."

Great! What about seeking out the best price and service? Look @ the history of Black-owned businesses in the U.S. Haven't they often charged ten prices on this very 'support our own' premise, combined with lack of choice due to segregation? Funeral parlors, furniture stores, small grocers, 2nd-hand merchants, insurance and real estate brokers -- PLEASE! Integration meant freedom of choice in the pocketbook. I mean, if u wanna do it just as an exercise, have at it! But doesn't the concept of BENEFITTING BUSINESSES over one's household violate basic lassiez-faire principles? Next point: What brands of CARS will these folks buy? How many will get rid of their Toyotas? What kind of gasoline will they use? As a native Michigander and an old-head, I'm among the folks who NEVER thought Detroit would fall. Hmmm....and who is hurting there? African-Americans!

WOW_guys, very heal;thy discussion that has me learning more than I considered. I agree with you Clark and I cannot think of anything more to add to your checklists----

I want so bad for black businesses to increase and improve and it is sooo frustrating to strive to patronize a black business and be treated poorly, but nobody gets my continued business in that situation....
hey, i didn't know we owned oil companies? A lot of things discussed in this project has me curious to see just how it works out. I do hope it catches on and I do more strongly hope that black business who are lacking in customer service, hone their skills more. All said and done, money is green so if I can zip up the street for goods and services, honestly that is what I do. However, I love going into black business districts when I know certain businesses will appreciate my dollars and inconvenience.

There are indeed many sides to this coin and I will be watching....

thanks guys for the healthy discussion.

Rudy, I would like to tell you about the Black owned oil fields and oil companys...Now what was the price of a gallon of gas a few months ago. What black owned business took $50 billion(and counting) or sold war weapons to (well you name it)?

Oh, Ruby have you been "intergrated" into the multi-billion $ social order???????And, if not then what is wrong with the picture of yours as related to Black business, large or small, family owned or cooperate owned??????

...and To the Rubys of the world if you really want to get pur "Race" then our Black President as head man will be able to use the taxpayer's money to build on tax payer's brought land black business like the White head man was able to do for Kmart&wal-mart, then get pass those cheap toys, foods, etc to be sole by them, well Ruby you know the story of what came back from China from those out sourced jobs...Then all of those higher but safer products sold in Black food markets can be sold much, much cheaper. Obama is a Constitutional attorney and he I believe can do as good of a job as Bush did(smile)

Thank you Clark as we as a society have no idea who owns our local business. I went into to shock when I learned that one of the big three oil company own the 7-11 stores in our neighborhoods and you get the franchise(as a manager) after you prove to them that you can make money in that location wher they have set up the store.

we tend to over look the simple fact that no business is out to make money for those who buy for them. They must pay for the help, transportation, etc...We pay moer for the "convenance" of savings in our time and effort to get satisfaction from that product. Frozen, cooked, meals cost more than those we must do our selves."It is not personal but business" as that expression goes(smiel)

Agnes, sorry to seem if I am just race centered because I am not. Your saying "respect" has caused me to want to share how and why I would rather shop in a small Black business, far and beyond shopping to help keep them in business.

One day I was at the check out counter at our local Wal-mart supper store; the clerk was having a problem with my (bank's debit)card that I had given him. The roving manager saw this and came over to help. The first words out of his mouth was if I was using a ,some named card that I had never heard of. When I asked a "card"what and what was this card, he said a Welfare card...needless to say I lost it!!! But, I loose it in this way, by asking my standard, "why did you think in that manner"? This is always folllowed by words of things like, I am not prejudice, etc. but I never give up asking the same question until they just walk away from me.They never are able to give me a direct answer to this question. This makes me feel good as it is my belief that this will cause that person to at least THINK, the next time.

And, by the way , my standard reply to the old "..some of my best friends are Black" is some of my worst enemies are Black. This also ends what they wanted to say next. It is also my belief that this behavior helps that other myth about 'all Blacks' are violent. I never not forget to give myself a pat myself on the back when things like this happens to me.(smile)
