After President Barack Obama took the Oath of Office last Tuesday, I got the impression more Whites were going out of their way to say hello to me. While such treatment is refreshing, I wonder if these efforts on their part are sincere, or are they being made because the very sight of me causes them to think about Obama, the damage he may do during his tenure in the White House.
Many of you are probably saying, "Why does it matter?" Well, if you directed this question to members of the news media, you would be told that the Obama presidency has resulted in more hate crimes being directed at Blacks. Let's be real: Having a black man in office isn't sitting well with many Whites. To them, his occupation of the office threatens their way of life, causes them to question their white supremist views even.
We must also remember that John McCain and his Republican cronies opted to run a campaign that appealed to white people's racial pride. They called Obama every name in the book, with the exception of the N word. McCain even used Jeremiah Wright by choosing not to use Jeremiah Wright in his attack ads against Obama. His decision garnered free publicity on shows like "Meet the Press" and "Good Morning, America". His campaign handlers probably also assumed that viewers would check Wright out on YouTube. All McCain had to do was exude a demeanor that let the world know that he was all about taking race out of the equation.
What do you think? Are you being treated better or worse by Whites? I look forward to reading your responses.
