From a White Senator in Virginia?‏ (1027 hits)

I wanted to share this letter I recently received from a group I support. Don’t know if any of you have heard but Sen. James Webb of VA is stepping up to the plate on much needed prison reform. Now, I’m all for “if you do the crime you must do the time,” however justice should be fair as well.

It’s amazing that the US imprisons more people than any country in the world. China and India have as many as 4 times the population we have, and yet they don’t imprison at the rate we do. The burden on taxpayers and the burden on families whose loved ones are sent off for lengthy terms for offenses others don’t even see the inside of a courtroom for, is not right.

The letter follows:

-------
Dear Clark,

When it comes to issues plaguing Black and low-income communities, a White senator from the South is the last person we'd expect to go out on a limb and sound the alarm. Senator Jim Webb from Virginia just did exactly that when he boldly called out the over-imprisonment of Black folks and the serious problems with our prison system. Most importantly, he's demanding big changes.1
Now it's up to us to seize the moment and create the pressure necessary to achieve true reform.

The first step is publicly thanking Senator Webb. Our praise will show other politicians that when they take risks and step out on critical issues like prison reform, we will have their backs. It will also show that everyday people stand with Webb and are serious about this issue. Please join us, and ask your friends and family to do the same:

In recent years, politicians have lacked the courage to create meaningful prison reform. They've been paralyzed by the fear of being branded as "soft on crime." They've been held hostage by prison guard unions and industry lobbies. And the communities most affected--Black and low-income communities--have had a hard time getting a seat at the table and making our voices heard.

Our country has a clear problem. With just 5% of the world's population, America holds nearly 25% of the world's reported prison population. Our prison population has quadrupled since 1984, and most of the increase comes from people being imprisoned for drug offenses--mostly minor and nonviolent.2

Despite the fact that there is no statistical difference in drug use between different racial groups, harsh drug laws have had a devastating, disproportionate effect on Black communities. While only 12% of the U.S. population is African-American, Black people make up 37% of those arrested on drug charges, 59% of those convicted, and 74% of all drug offenders sentenced to prison.3

It's surprising and encouraging that someone like Senator Webb is speaking out in this way. Webb is a White politician from Virginia, a Southern "law-and-order" state that has abolished parole and executed more people than any state besides Texas.4 He has nothing to gain politically from this--it's an act of true conviction.

By eloquently making the case for reform and calling for a National Criminal Justice Commission, Webb has created a major opening to address these issues. And it comes at a time when there are increasing signs the country is ready for reform. New York's governor and state legislature just struck a deal to reform the state's "Rockefeller drug laws"--some of the harshest laws in the country, and a great example of the failed status quo.5 A panel of federal judges has just told California it must reduce its prison population by a third to alleviate the torturous conditions stemming from overcrowding.6 And at the same time that more people are recognizing the deep injustices in our system, the economic crisis is forcing elected officials at all levels of government to realize they can't afford to keep directing so many taxpayer dollars toward law enforcement, jails, and prisons.7

We need to make the most of this moment. Take a minute to thank Senator Jim Webb for his courageous stand and support his call for a meaningful commission. And when you do, please ask your friends and family to do the same.

Clark, I was for the three strikes law eventhough I knew that if you got 3 felonies you were sent to prison for life as a habitual criminal...Now I find how in truth the 3 strikes was more related to making sure these PRIVATE prisons here in Ca. stayed FULL...

I must say finding out about how our court Judges are getting paid to put people behind bars, does not help me as an avarage American citizen to so easily still accept these REFORMS like this...CHANGE...(smile)

Clark, I remember the words of one of our Black famale state senaters from Ca. on the last Black form on CNN(of Tavis Simley's) not too long ago saying how inmates can get trained and liscens to be barbers, yet the law prevents them for cutting hair because they are on parole...

I do reject the not voting argument as I replace it with voter ignorance, prejudices and above all, just being out right LAZY!!!! I will not even touch on the Conservative party's mentality because it is the party's tried and true out look.

We the people are the government. This is why I believe that the economy has got to get worst for us to become the government that works for our own local community as a part of the Federal, State matters of laws and stop leaving it to the vote for the best and biggest media ad to make up our minds who and what to vote for or against. The Republican party is stuck at this point right now.More interested in blocking the Democrat pary than to include the people who did/did not vote for them. No, I believe their intrest is more to demean ,degrade our president than any thing else.

As for Senater Webb, he has had my full support and respect since he admited he use the word n*ggaR and he knows just how to use it to offend or reach out in respect. I have been asked many times why I can say n*ggar and it is not an offense...EDUCATION is the cure all in "my" book. What I mean is I would trust Webb as a man of his word if I lived in his state(smile)

Right back at you my brother mozell. You have owned up to you are in control of the causes and effects you make on your enviornment. But, your best and your living proof of "FREEDOM" IS PRICELESS AND HOW THIS IS EARNED, NOT GIVEN under the legal laws of man or society.

FOR EXAMPLES one former prison inmate told me how many in prison managed to get there so fast until they are trying to understand how they got therein the first place...repeat offenders "I" have concluded have the same "I will get away with it(this time) reality as the person who speeds on the highway expecting everyone to get a ticket or cause and accident but them...

Thank you Mozell because although you do not yet realize it, you are the direct cause of us having a president named Barack Hussein Obama...look at what they came after him with and he has never even been given a jay walking ticket;that I know of...You represent the real change-the learning by your own mistake and making the world you live in better because you are on this planet.YOU HAVE COME INTO MY LIFE(smile)as a representative of my race's ability to survive and grow, learn and teach by way of our own God given talents!!!!!!THIS IS MY YOU ARE WELCOME MOZELL(smile)
