Baltimore, Md., June 22, 2009 -- College of Notre Dame of Maryland School of Pharmacy will host a community health care conversation on Friday, June 26, from noon to 1 p.m. in Fourier Hall, Room 103.

The topic, “Medication Spending and Health Care Reform: How to Make the Most of Your Health Care Dollar,” will help consumers and caregivers understand the value and make better use of their prescription coverage, whether they are uninsured, have private insurance or are covered by Medicaid or Medicare Part D.

John Michael O’Brien, Pharm.D., MPH, assistant professor, clinical and administrative sciences, will lead the discussion at College of Notre Dame. After the presentation Dr. O’Brien will answer audience questions about prescription drug spending and the efforts of the president and the Congress to pass comprehensive health care reform.

The discussion is being held as part of President Barack Obama’s call for events such as this one to take place on the topic of health care. Comments from the audience about the affordability of prescription drugs as well as their concerns about Medicare Part D will be shared with the White House after the event.

“Prescription drugs account for 11 cents of every health care dollar, and pharmacists are committed to improving medication use and advancing public health,” said Dr. O’Brien. “College of Notre Dame School of Pharmacy is joining the thousands of volunteers nationwide who will roll up their sleeves, raise awareness about the urgent need for reform and do what we can to improve vital health care services for people in need. ”

College of Notre Dame is located at 4701 North Charles Street in Baltimore. For more information about the discussion, call 410-532-5202.

College of Notre Dame School of Pharmacy welcomes its inaugural class in the fall. It will be the first school of pharmacy established on the campus of a women's college in the United States. The program, with 70 students per class, will provide a distinctive focus on leadership development and women's health care across the lifespan and will be open to women and men.
