FIRST BLACK MAYOR OF MEMPHIS RESIGNS

W.W.Herenton is the first black mayor of Memphis. He was elected by a landslide vote in 1991. He's ran for mayor 5 consecutives times and won. However, yesterday Mayor W.W. Herenton has decided to turn in his resignation from his long-term mayor's seat. Before becoming mayor of Memphis he was superintendent of Memphis City Schools for 12 years. He is a graduate of LeMoyne-Owen College and a native born Memphian. During his term, the mayor has met much opposition and challenging obstacles and still managed to overcome many of them. The newest turn for the mayor now is set on running for a seat in congress. Backed by many supporters the mayor is very outspoken he has a very good chance to win in the 2010 election. The mayor expressed strongly that he is feeling pressured to resign, but that he felt sure his move will make a significant rewarding change. City Councilman, Myron Lowery will become impending mayor until the arrangements for the next election of the mayor's race. Herenton's resignation becomes final effective July 10, 2009.

NURSING HOME HELD SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The 22nd Annual Nursing Home Olympics was held at the Agricenter on Wednesday where more than 300 seniors entered competitions. The event was conducted by the Tennessee Health Care Association, Memphis District. Competions involved events in wheelchair races, basketball, Velcro darts and pitching horseshoes. Many of the competetors were from St. Peter Villa. Cheers and awards were jovial!

Shelby County taxes are likely to rise under a school funding plan that has won a preliminary vote from Shelby County Commmissions on Wednesday. Under the proposal the Shelby County Government would be the only funding source for the city and the county school districts. That would increase Shelby County property taxes but has little increase on city taxpayers. Since the proposal is not law yet it could take a turn around. Residents of the county only pay county taxes, but those who live in the city pay city and county taxes, county tax payers may end up in turn paying more.
