Filling Big Shoes: Another First Among Blacks (525 hits)

It's always so stimulating to discover that Blacks are fulfilling achievements and finding determination where there are becoming among the Firsts. On Saturday, July 11, 2009 there was one who found her way to fill some big shoes. 15 year-old Kimberly Anayadike of Los Angeles, California became what is believed to be the youngest African-American female to pilot an airplane from coast to coast! She didn't fly alone though, she was accompanied by an adult safety pilot, and an 87 year old World War II Veteran, named Levi Thornhill. Miss Anyadike had to stop and rest for approximately 13 stops along the way. It was her original ideal to fly across the country because she wanted to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, which she also met many of them along her journey.

This is such a significant first as we know that each of us can has our own firsts, and how we as a people still are achieving many goals. The flying teen was quoted as saying: I had big shoes to fill."

Remarkable! You're so right Mozell it didn't get a lot of publicity so that's one reason I thought I'd post it here. Ditto Irma! Thank you both..

Hello Irma:) I can understand you. I'm still learning many things about being a web wizard! But I try to spread much along as I can with the communication skills I have. So I am very down to earth, and I'm not a know it all but like you I try. No.. there aren't enough minority anchors and we are still far in the background but we have a voice. A voice is heard if it's spoken. We don't give do we Irma? We keep going...YES WE DO... YES WE CAN! Here's a hug for ya!

Hi Nelle! It didn't get a whole lot of coverage considering this was an very extraordinary accomplishment. Every bit of announcing it spreads it a little bit more....Tell it!

This is alright Mozell, because they would still be relating 'first' with 'token' which will never exist in America again. "I" now have begun to say, the one(first) LEADER in -------------, or 'taking the lead in -------.

First should never be the finate when relating to an African-American again...so we must begin to work on what we will be using to replace TOKEN+ FIRST in BIA(smile)

And, as you say my sister, Big Shoes to Fill...YES WE CAN...

Goodmorning sister MIISRAEL, while channel surfing a little while ago, I saw on FOX the 17 year old who is going aroung the world by water, and it hit me like a ton of bricks...the TV and print media now go the the net to find much of their news to cover that is of most interest for keeping their ratings up in this day and age.

Why do we not just by pass news mediams like FOX and actually all of the rest of the cable news media, because they do not have minority anchors or even enough minoritys to even have a big enough voice in planning the daily coverage of minority community interest from the git go...

Let's start turning to the net to get our amjor and much needed reporting of our community interest and communications nationally and internationally our interest being communicated on a mass scale...

especially for those like me who are internet brain dead on top of living so far into the boondocks until I can not even get dial up to work on my computer, but I can send and recieve emails to fullfill my part in helping us get out this great and moving news making history of this young angel's backing up 'our' YES WE CAN!!!(smile)
