I just separately wrote a blog on CNN's web site that addressed the same issue of where the "experts" come from - even black ones - re ignoring HBCU's. You can check it out: http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2009/07/17/a-jo... I personally believe that this continued reality persists because of how mainstream America continues to ignore the reality of their being a historical, educated culture among black people - and to turn to these institutions as resources is to dispel the myth that everything about black ascent is "new." I believe that this is internalized and guides the behavior of such exclusiveness - not necessarily deliberate. If I'm correct, this does not excuse it at all - it simply means that until such institutions as CNN are willing to aggressively do the opposite - it won't change. I think "WE" can help make this happen.

That's really sad that money that HBCUs have depended on from govt entities is being cut. Although I didn't attend a HBCU, I think that they are very important to the health of American society and upholding the notion that Black people are a very proud and gifted people. I looked at the link, but it came up only showing Soledad with some kids. There were only 3 comments from some children. Sorry brother...I didn't see your comments.

Thanks for your comment, Irma. I do think that we are fighting back - and just have to do it. I'm not pessimistic. I study obesity among black adolescents (did a study in the U.S. Virgin Islands - finishing up my PhD there - so I did Howard... but I've done two non HBCUs too :-) ) - so Dr. Sanjay Gupta and two news anchors are reporting on obesity among blacks in America, and particularly among black females - TODAY - and there's no reference or call to a black expert (such as Dr. Shiriki Kumanyika of Univ. of Penn - the foremost black researcher on obesity and is internationally known). And they're talking about black women being more accepting about their body types, etc. It's not that what they were saying was untrue - in general - but the fact that they could have this conversation on national TV without realizing that there are black nutrition experts who study this very complex phenomenon - and they kept talking!

Hello Mr. Jones, All that we ever done for the past hundreds of years to this present day are complain and whine. I know that if we were sovereign people, or have complete independence from White America on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders would resolve our problems. The whining and complaining that you all do would immediately evaporate, am I right or am I wrong? Our sovereignty would is a permanent solution and all of you know it. Ms. Jen Fad said that our sovereignty is not feasible or realistic. I will tell you, what is not feasible or realistic, and that is not to conceive the idea, then that would actually make it not feasible or realistic. For example, if a person could conceive the idea of suicide and develop such idea to a serious level, than conceiving the idea makes the reality of suicide feasible and realistic. The opposite is just as true; not to conceive the idea of suicide will make committing suicide not feasible or realistic. Therefore, to see your sovereignty or complete independence as unfeasible or unrealistic you will always be whining and complaining as you have been for hundreds of years. You all have no faith in God and yourselves. Does anyone disagree with my rationale, please say so? What say you?

Edward, as long as we as a race of people can sit back and allow things like we only have generations after generations of positive citizens if we have a slave master as the father...and that master must have married the slave(and this was forced by the southern viewers to be left our of the CNN BIA special on family) because the single Black mother is the cause of our being on drugs, in prison, refuse to go to school or just out and out refuse all that the white man has tried unsuccessfully to do for us...then we deserve just what we get over our TV 's education!!!! And, on top of this we are the best proof of just how right these program specials are, because, we fail to make phone calls, write letters to every government office, politicans and news papers we can find, to demand that the FCC either enforce its rule that no liscense will be given to any of our public air waves entities that are "demeaning" to the public!!!!!I am the public and dispite the demands that we make even down to giving out warnings to homes like mine that programs like that BIA special can be a danger when brought into our homes without warnings!!!!!!!That program was in direct opposit of what was taught to me by my family, my black history major and what I have taught my children and they their children!!!!!!!! I can go on and on, but will let the future FCCs be forced to defend these practices before congress and maybe a Supreme Court that is truly representative of America...(smile) And, much love and respect to you my brother...and may I also add that I tend to lead with my pride in my race, culture socializations and my African and African-American UCD degree(smile)YES at UCD we changed the name to begin with Africa and my graduation was the 8th ALL Black graduation from the University of California at Davis in 92'. We were putting emphsis on the town being still segerated...

Edward, much like it took the 60s to force our government to actually enforce its own Supreme Court's Brown vs Board of Education into action, and 400 years to get a nonWhite male into that "whitehouse" in a city that was designed by a Black man and the majority of us still do not like it...I know it will take longer for us. And, the main reson for this is maybe it takes such a long time and such efforts and never loosing faith in our being patient and work as we did for the coming generations be our goals. for example, The group that I formed almost 6 years ago, went on faith especially afte the FCC only responded with cover letters...but, as many of us said when we said how "We never thought we would see the day our having a black man in the White and now more than a TOKED on the supreme court, thes e years of using our computers and our funds going to pay for long distance calls to these stations to hold them responsible fot the program, the anchor and the racial statements. stistics. comments and the day and time made has been worth it. Again it may not come into play that we can use these documetations agains the FCC but we will SOME DAY, WE SHALL OVER COME, SOME DAY... and, you know exactly what I mean, as I say we out here in Northern Ca. have your back we just did not know that we were watching each other's backs...now we do...(smile)This is true Black community leadership, not taught on programs like BIA specials. But, from the way they are doing ads about the program, I get the felings it will not be a racist as the first was, this is progress from wher I stand...
