Downtown Memphis: 07.30.2009
Memphis came out in numbers to attend the press-conference of the resignation of Memphis own Mayor W.W. Herenton. Filled with a room full of well-wishes and so longs the lobby of City Hall set with a warm tone of listeners and reporters. The mayor has turned in his resignation postponed dates at least three times, Today, he decided he will finally sign off. There was plenty of picture snapping and the people were in a pleasant tone. While out a about in the crowd, I questioned a few Memphians about the resignation. "How do you feel about the resignation of the Mayor? I asked.. Here are few replies, One man said.."I don't think he should go." Another said..."He's been a good mayor, but even with all his attitude, he's a man I really admire." Another citizen said: "I'm glad to see him go, it's time for a change, not meaning in harm, but I think it's about time!" Ending my little walk and talk, one man said: I think personally he's just setting the stage for Shelby County Mayor, W.C. Wharton to take his place." Officially, the mayor hasn't shown any surprises to hold off resigning like he has a few number of times in the past. This time I can truly write: The Mayor of Memphis has resigned...Finally! Mayor Wille Herenton has served as mayor since 1991. The longest term of office ever served by any public offical in Memphis history.
