Marcus Garvey 
Black Nationalist, Publisher, Journalist, Orator And Entrepreneur, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Was Born On August 17, 1887, In St. Ann's Bay, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica.
In 1916 Marcus Garvey Moved To Harlem, New York To Gain Support For The Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), Which He First Established In Jamaica As The Jamaican Improvement Association (JIA). The UNIA Encouraged Blacks To Return To Africa And Wanted To See African States Freed From Colonialism. The Organization Also Promoted And Encouraged Black Pride And Self-Determination. As The Charismatic President-General Of The UNIA, Garvey Attracted Millions Of Supporters And The Movement Thrived From The Late 1900's To The Early 1920's. The "Negro World," The UNIA's Official Publication, Became One Of The Most Widely Read Periodicals Of Its Day, With Garvey As Publisher And Editor. He Was Also Able To Purchase A Steamship ( Part Of His Black Star Line) To Carry African Americans Back To Africa.
Despite The Fact That His Detractors Called Him "Outlandish," "Misguided" And A Failure, He Succeeded In Raising Black Consciousness And Over $10 Million In 2 Years.
Marcus Garvey Organized The First And Largest, Grass-Roots Mass Movement Of Blacks In America, Including The Civil Rights Movement Of The 1950's And 1960's. At One Time The Universal Negro Improvement Association Had More Than 4 Million Members. His Philosophy Influenced A Generation Of Black Leaders Like Malcolm X And The Black Panthers, And Effectively Set The Tone For The "Black Power" Movement Of The 1960's And Early 1970's.
Garvey Was Convicted Of Mail Fraud In 1923, Following An Investigation By J. Edgar Hoover And The FBI. He Served Time In Atlanta's Federal Prison Before Being Deported To Jamaica In 1927.
Garvey Remained Politically And Socially Active Prior To His Death In London, June 10, 1940.

Thank you Hugh, as my major in college was African and African-American history and minor Philosophy, I was better equiped to understand how and why so many of our own peoples are the main causes of our own self-distructions...
In Black history as not taught from the advantage of european-centered miseducation, (to keep us learning our history from their TV specials)we learned that it was W.E.B. Dubois being used much as what's his name that got Affermitave Action made illegal in California, to bring down the first Black owned big business in America...
the Black Star Line and in exchange we now have an almost worthless for our protection of our civil rights earned in the 60s, the NAACP!!!!!!
Like it or not, accept it or not this is Black In America's history as a TRUE FACT...along with how Jesse Jackson has never been POOR a day in his life!!!!!!!

...and please, do not come after me...go after those who created the Black Panthers to stop racial profiling and went to prison as Hoover's public enemy #1 because like the NOI and Garvey they never gave up trying to get us to have full, TOTAL Black pride and to use our Black pride to be Black and beautiful and powerful as FIRST CLASS CITIZENS...
and also blame them for all getting PHds and forcing the Federal Government to be not only allowing Black In America departments in all of our colleges and now manditory in the elementray schools in Pa.but for forcing them to pay for these Black study departments.LOL
You know that state where Bobby Segal started the first and headed Black history department taught by African-centured education(at Temple university) and not the European-centered that has so many of us out of ignorance hating on Rev. J. Wright for teaching in his church the very same things taught in our schools about us as true BIA!!!!(smile)
If you do not know all of this then you still have no idea why our president got such full and complete backing and support from college students(smile)or about COLOROFCHANGE...YES WE can...YES WE DID...YES WE WILL CONTINUE TO DO...
