Last night during President Obama's speech, SC Rep. Joe Wilson interrupted his speech with an immature and classless comment, basically calling him a liar with regards to illegal immigrants receiving health care. Now I have watched presidential speeches for most of my life and I have NEVER heard of an outburst from any representative during any of them. Their comments were reserved for after the speech. This man claimed that he "let his emotions get the best of" him. Yeah, right. What he did was demonstrate his own degree of racism. Comments denouncing his comment have come from both sides of the aisle as well as within his own state. His website was bombarded by outraged constituents to the point where it crashed, he can't be reached by phone due to the sheer volume of callers, and even Twitter has received thousands of tweets. He has outraged so many people that his opponent has received over $100,000 in donations OVERNIGHT. He began receiving calls DURING the speech. His fellow Republicans even gave him the 'Are You Stupid' look. Not only did he show disrespect to the president, but also to the office itself.
Of course he apologized for his comment, however the damage was done. The possibility of him being re-elected is slim to none. Both of his supporters on Twitter are the lone islands in an ocean of disdain and disgust. There is absolutely no justification for his disrespectful outburst, and his red face now matches his neck. His colleagues are beginning to distance themselves because of the possibility of being viewed in the same stupid and racist light he shown upon himself, even if they are. Committing political suicide is not the objective of any politician, yet that is exactly what he did. An apology will not be enough to salvage his career. As Luther Vandross said, "It's over now!"
