Team road trip ends in baptism

Kathryn Blaze Carlson, National Post Published: Wednesday, September 09, 2009

When Dannie Ammons' 16-year-old son, Robert, left on a school bus bound for a neighbouring Kentucky county two weeks ago, he thought his son's high-school football team was off to hear a motivational speaker and enjoy a steak dinner.

Instead, Robert was baptized and, along with eight other members of the Fighting Tigers football team, accepted Christ as his saviour.

Mr. Ammons, who is Catholic, said his son received the religious sacrament without his knowledge or consent.

Robert, a sophomore who plays safety, told his father that his coach, Scott Mooney, said partaking in a baptism would be a team-building experience. "He said it would bring the team together," Robert told the Louisville's Courier-Journal.

Roughly half of the team's 40 players participated in the excursion on Aug. 26 to Franklin Crossroads Baptist Church, the coach's church, for which permission slips were not required. That night, Robert and eight of his teammates -- all minors -- swapped their jeans and T-shirts for white robes, and were submerged in baptismal water during a 20-minute ceremony.

"I believe the faith was pushed on my son," Mr. Ammons said, adding that he and his wife, who is a Baptist, hoped his son would wait until he was older to decide his faith.

"I think the coach used his faith as a weapon, and my son followed along. We feel like he was brainwashed.... I asked my son if he even knows what it means to be baptized as a Baptist, and he has no clue."

Superintendent Janet Meeks, who is also a member of the church and who witnessed the ceremony, said she thought parents were aware the event included a church service and said participation was voluntary. "The coach requested the use of a school bus," she said in a statement released last night. "The cost of the fuel was donated, and the driver volunteered."

Although Mr. Ammons said most parents were "kept in the dark," a handful of parents knew their sons were heading to the revival service. In fact, some parents travelled the 40 kilometres to the Baptist church to attend the event.

"We had invited the coach and his team for a night of encouragement," said Rev. Ron Davis, who baptized the players. "Those boys made the decision in that moment to be obedient and know Christ."

Also among the 700 congregants was the coach's daughter, who was also baptized at the service. Although Rev. Davis typically seeks parental consent for baptisms involving minors, he said the boys were "bulked up" and looked older than their 16 years.

"I didn't check their IDs," he said, adding that Mr. Mooney -- who has brought players to church services in the past -- did not pre-arrange for the boys to accept the sacrament.

"If I had known his mother and father would be upset, I would have tried to persuade him to wait."

Indeed, Mr. Ammons and his wife, Michelle, are planning to consult a lawyer. "I want something done, this whole thing is just wrong," said Mr. Ammons, adding that his son thinks he is overreacting and fears ruffling feathers among the team. "This doesn't happen every day."

This is a very interesting post Brother Steve. I was recently baptised into the Catholic faith mainly because it is a requirement for school if you want your kid to attend Catholic School in some parts of Ontario. At first it was simply for me a thing to get my son into school, but after attending the sessions and even attending Mass, I felt a real sense of belonging having been discouraged with the pentecostal faith and their prosperity doctrine.

Really no harm was done to their son, but I can understand these parent's concern as there have been looneys like Jim Jones and Manson cults. I would hope that the parents would heed the voice of reason in their son. No harm was done to him in this instance, but I'm sure the coach will inform the parents of any field trips in the future.

Hi Sister Jen, I googled and found this for Irma, I think my own thought is that at 16 a person is more a young adult than child and can make this choice. I myself am now going to a Black Baptist church, it is a much more joyful place than other churches I have gone to. I am not a typical Christian as I look for a spiritual message, not a literal belief in heaven, and certainly not eternal damnation, and on this I agree with Sister Irma, the damage that this fear of burning in hell forever is a negative to the Christian teachings. I go to church to be with others who have a spiritual nature, and avoid controversies on doctrine. I go because I want to be with people who are happy. And this particular church has a technology mission, which is my own personal cause for a more equal society.

I would also like to ask those who are also on blackhistory to look at my friends there for AKE Smile, from Togo Africa, and add him to your friends. I have invited him here to BIA, he is a young man who is trying to make progress under much more difficult conditions than we have here in the U.S.

Yes you are so correct Sister Irma about the Catholic Churches' requirements to become Catholic. I was lucky to have the Rev. Father do my classes for me in less time than was required, but usually I hear the classes take about a year to complete here in my Province.

Also I'm trying to teach my son 4 year old the 3 prayers that he needs to know along with the poem he'll be saying daily at school. He's doing really well because kids learn so fast. I hope you don't mind my asking, but why did you convert from Catholicism Sister Irma? Was it due to the Priest Scandals?

And, before anyone jumps all over me, I am only against the over: misuse, miseducation and out and out open /socially accepted abuse of the Christian religion to cause one to loose self-esteem and self respect with the threat of hell and damnation...look at how we in this country misused our president at our public schools by the Christian right-wing which the only thing they represent is hatered for anyone with color to their skin!!!!!!

WAKE UP...

Please Steve keep trying to get him to come over here as we all have a different problem, concern that sometimes we believe that we are the only ones who has this. Which communication is so important for a lot of different angles.

Human sufferings knows no boundrey or langusge that can limit its contacts with any place, person or thing on this planet/universe. Never has, never will as long as at least two people exist. As it takes only two people to be able to communicate ( one to send a message and one to recieve said message) which interestingly two is all that is needed to have a society.(smile)

Also, may I point out how something like this could have never happened in the Catholic faith. This is because one can not just walk in and be baptised. You must learn about the faith and learn some prayers, ect.Now a new born baby can be baptised, but in doing even this it has to envolve some before hand planning...And, even that infant must still be a certain age and have had learned bout the faith before they can take their first communion. It is like a right of passage.this was an impulse, mind control to get a number on the Church's books and something to brag about which is another form of abuse and miseducation about the Christian teachings on the Christian bible.

Me, I respect "all" religious faiths too much to join in in any form of abuse of it even this kinds of getting a member....(I am not smiling)..I am speaking from 48 years of being a member of the Catholic faith although I have been a former member since 21 years ago!!!!!
