Education Reform (338 hits)

The news and blogs are full of talk about Health Care Reform. What about Education Reform? That the gang related death of Derrion Albert, an honor student, should have occurred right outside of school shows the crisis at its worst. I hear lots of talk about Law and Order, blaming the parents, etc. Where are the town hall meetings, daily speeches by the President and Congress, talk shows, etc. when it comes to the subject of Education Reform? Education is primary. How can these communities heal without addressing the issue of education? Here is what's happening in Philly (or what I've learned so far, just beginning to look into this). I appreciate your comments.

School changes won't be forced, Ackerman says

By Kristen A. Graham

Inquirer Staff Writer

The process of transforming failing schools won't be handled in Philadelphia as it has been in other cities, schools chief Arlene Ackerman promised yesterday.

Changes will not be forced on neighborhood schools, she said, and parents and students will "feel like they have a say in deciding what transformation looks like for their school communities."

Ackerman made her remarks at a news conference after the first meeting of a group that will study which schools will close and who should run them.

As part of her Imagine 2014 plan, Ackerman wants to close up to 35 chronically underperforming schools in the next five years. They would be reopened as charters or schools run by outside management firms or individuals.

The first group of schools - officials estimate 10 - is to open in September 2010, so the board must work quickly.

Fifty educators, teachers, parents, and community members make up the Renaissance Schools Advisory Board, which is led by Mayor Nutter's education secretary, Lori Shorr; Patricia Coulter, chief executive of the Urban League of Philadelphia; and Robert Peterkin, who heads the Urban Superintendents Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Leroy Nunery, a consultant and former Edisonlearning executive, has been named to facilitate the group's work.

In the next week, the committee will get data about 25 failing schools from around the city with no school names attached, so members can be totally objective, district officials said.

One subgroup, chaired by Shorr, will be charged with devising a system to pick the schools to close. Another will be in charge of community engagement, and a third will be in charge of provider recruitment and selection.

No schools have been chosen yet and no providers have been contacted about running schools, Ackerman said.

Ackerman has focused much attention on the district's lowest-performing schools. Ninety-five have been set aside and given additional resources; $30 million was spent on the so-called empowerment schools last year.High-achieving and magnet schools should not take that to mean they'll be out in the cold, the superintendent said.

"We're not going to rob Peter to pay Paul," she said. "We're not taking money from any of our other schools."

The group is expected to deliver recommendations by October. Its work will be reviewed by education experts from around the country.

Education change and concern is the greatest cause a human being can undertake, I have been fortunate in my life to have all my children, oldest 34, in private schooling-I feel for those that cannot or will not do this.
The state of Minnesota(spelledMississippi) is trying to kill my younger childrens school now because the achievements of our students -k-9 are in the top 5% in minnesota; eventhough the majority of our students' homes do not have english as a primary language.
I pray great success to your educational efforts in philly.

* Children are living messages we send into a lifetime we will not see. (John W. Whitehead)

* It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken the joy in creative expression and knowledge. (Albert Einstein)

Hello to all,

Let me show you all from a different angle why sovereignty or complete independence from White America on a portion of this continent is necessary for our survival.

Firstly, it could not be denied that Black Americans are eight different people from White Americans.

Now, Black Americans lives under the jurisdiction of White America. For instance, the Constitution of White America affords all citizens the right to bear firearms. Now, while the right to bear firearms is good for White America it is not okay for Black Americans. Now, if we were a sovereign people or have complete independence our Constitution may be written differently. The point that I have just made think about it in terms of other things as education, because education is not our solution.

Another example, White America’s laws have restrictions on how Black parents could raise that child. For instance, Black parents cannot whip their children as my father and mother whipped me. Today my parents would have been put in jail for whipping me.

So, what I am saying is that through out the years White America’s laws while good for them have had a devastating affect on the Black population.

Consequentially, most of you cannot comprehend right now that what I am saying that we must become a sovereign people eludes you. In addition, all of you believe that the things I say are impossible and would never happen. However, it is going to happen.

Tell me what you think.

Hello Steve,

Irma said this, “Keep on Steve, one day I will have you looking at things from the black point of view...actually it is really not hard to do once one learns that we are each different from each other just like any other race of people are... “

I believe Irma is saying that Blacks and Whites are two different people ethnically speaking and there is nothing wrong to knowledge this fact.

Tell me what you think.

I believe Irma is saying Black individuals are each different from each, just like white individuals.

And when I get a little money I am going to do a DNA test to see if I am a descendant of slaves. If so, would I then be a Black American?

Or does Black Americans who are descendants of slaves depend on skin color?
Saturday, October 3rd 2009 at 1:09PM
Steve Williams
And as Mr. Weston asked, what is the MMR?
Saturday, October 3rd 2009 at 1:11PM
Steve Williams
Hello Steve,

It is obvious that we are different from each of the individually speaking. For instance, five Black men are different from each other but by the same token, all five of these Black men collectively speaking are significantly different from five White men individually or collectively speaking. Now what I just said should not be so difficult for you to comprehend and accept.

You asked this question, “does Black Americans who are descendants of slaves depend on skin color?”

What is the determining factor is slavery more so than skin color or MMR. A person could be consider a descendent of slaves directly or indirectly. Indirectly would be a marriage as in the case of President Obama who is not a descendent of slaves but Michelle Obama is. What I am saying is not something etched in stone. The point is that God is not given Black Americans who are descendents of slaves’ sovereignty that someone who is clearly not a descendent of slaves should rule over the descendents of slaves in our own country.

Next, you asked this question, “And when I get a little money I am going to do a DNA test to see if I am a descendant of slaves. If so, would I then be a Black American?”

Of course, you would be a descendent of slaves Steve.

What say you?

Hello Steve,

You asked, “would I be a Black American?”

Yes, you would be a Black American. However, the phrase Black American must be followed up with the clause, descendent of slaves. If this is not clarified, you could be a Nigerian who is an American citizen and Black but not a descendent of slaves. Do you understand or are you still trying to complicate matters?

What say you?

Irma, I am who I am. My ancestry is just a matter of curiosity. I already know my ancestry is varied, I would like to know just how varied.

As for what I said to Harry, well Harry is a racist. I don't mean that in its usual negative sense, but because his whole argument revolves around race. I think anyone would be hard pressed to even define the word, who is not a separatist as Harry is. Historically humans evolved many variations as a result of geography and being relatively isolated in their geography. These include social and religious as well as physical variations.

Today it makes more sense to speak in terms of citizenship. We are all Americans, who were born in America, regardless of where our ancestors came from. Does that make us the American race? I don't think so. But obviously people in other parts of the world have enmity for us, but that is based on our own actions.

Harry thinks he can separate us into races but he is really just doing the same as those he wishes to separate himself from, which is to judge people by their skin tone. Therefore I am a White man.

But on to the subject of education, why are all the faces we saw around Derrion Albert dark? Some force is still at work to separate us, and I say it is less Glenn Beck than economics. And the economics of it denies education to some and so the cycle continues. Self esteem is also related to economics, and suffers from seeing a certain color component to the economically devastated neighborhoods. So my belief is we address the education disparity we will take a big step forward towards addressing the economic disparity, and maybe someday we will clean up this concept of race as well.

Hello Steve,

Steve, you said this, “well Harry is a racist. I don't mean that in its usual negative sense, but because his whole argument revolves around race.”

I beg to differ with you. My argument does not revolve around race. My argument revolves around sovereignty or complete independence from White America. As many times, as I have use the word sovereignty and complete independence you have not connected the dots. Why it is that you cannot connect to the word sovereignty or complete independence to understand just what it is that I am saying?

Race or skin color is entirely a different issue, am I right? Race or skin color has nothing to do with sovereignty or complete independence. My discussions have always been about sovereignty or complete independence.

Let me ask you this question, when Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and others met in the Hall of Philadelphia to discuss the sovereignty or complete independence of young America from King George of England were they racists and separatists? How would you describe the aspirations and desires of these men who are America’s founding fathers?

Tell me what you think.

Sunday, October 4th 2009 at 9:22AM
Harry Watley
Hello Harry,

You have said this:

"The differences of intelligence that I am trying to point between Black Americans and dark skinned people compared to White Americans and Caucasian people cannot be measured genetically speaking. It could only be measure racially from results of each race.

Genetic is something that is physical and tangible while intelligence is spiritual and intangible. In other words, you could only see intelligence by results. The genetics for the brains are the same for humankind. Intelligence is not the same for humankind. However, intelligence could be measured by comparing one race with another race using a very simple scenario to resolve a problem. General intelligence equals how information is processed in the brain that affects the out come of the entire problem, which may translate, into one race being dumber than the next race."

From the Human Genome Project information pages we have this:

"DNA studies do not indicate that separate classifiable subspecies (races) exist within modern humans. While different genes for physical traits such as skin and hair color can be identified between individuals, no consistent patterns of genes across the human genome exist to distinguish one race from another. There also is no genetic basis for divisions of human ethnicity. People who have lived in the same geographic region for many generations may have some alleles in common, but no allele will be found in all members of one population and in no members of any other."

You desire sovereignty for "Black Americans who are descendants of slaves". I can easily understand the descendant of slaves part, but not so easily the Black American part. You have defined Black American in other places as a people resulting from the breeding of White masters and Black slave women. Well, I am sure that there are also descendants of slaves who had no such interbreeding as well. And much more interbreeding of a voluntary basis since slavery times.

My wife who is half black was complimented once by a white women on how did she get such a nice tan. She was not happy. You see, discrimination in this country is based on visual criteria and cultural factors.

I am saying that your uphill battle is to define precisely those you wish to be sovereign. You have not made a rational explanation for this yet, in my opinion. And when you speak of differences in Black and White intelligence, in particular Black intelligence being somehow inferior, well that sounds racist to me.

Hello Steve,

You are complicating matters for yourself and I am not going to give myself a headache over it.

I said that race or skin color is entirely a different issue than sovereignty or complete independence of Black Americans on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.

I am not going to argue with you because I know well stand what I am saying.

I went further since you made the claim that I was racists and a separatist. Now, history records that Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and others met in the Hall of Philadelphia to discuss Young America’s independence from King George of England and do you think that they were racists and separatists to King George of England.

I am waiting on your answer concerning Benjamin Franklin and not anything about genetics or Human Genome Project.

Now you have an above average IQ. I only have a 68 IQ please use your intelligence and stop the nonsense.

What say you?

Hello Harry,

Sorry, I would not want to give you a headache.

Some quotes from Harry Watley:

"I made the claim that Black Americans are a new breed or race of people that has emerged out of the ashes of slavery. I went on to how Black Americans are a new race and I gave dates backing myself up."

"I said that race or skin color is entirely a different issue than sovereignty or complete independence of Black Americans on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders."

I think you are a very confused man.

I will be happy to discuss Franklins once we have cleared up this confusion about race/sovereignty. And perhaps we may even get back to the subject of education.

Irma, I agree. The most important thing in education is to inspire the student to want to learn. If we do this, the rest will follow of its own accord. As we ourselves have learned, education is a joy, not a chore.

Hello Steve,

Steve, just to enlighten you, you should not say that I am confuse and not show how I am confuse. You need to adapt to how I dialogue. I state my points or premise and I rationally backs them up. Notice the two quotes of mines in your comment you used to say that I am confused, well those two quotes starts out by saying, “I made the claim-----” and the second one starts out by saying, “I said that race or skin color-----” are followed up with support. You and hardly anyone else do that, which shows that you all do not intelligently dialogue. You all just make accusations and most times do not follow the subject coherent and rationally.

So, as I said, I am not going to give myself a headache and wrestle with you. I want to rationally, coherently and intelligently dialogue and when I run into people as you that do not have this talent they are not going to give me a headache. Therefore, I will pass on this one. I am tired of saying the same thing over and over that my platform is sovereignty or complete independence on a portion of this continent for Black Americans who are descendents of slaves.

What say you?

Hello to all,

You all may feel that it is about education, but it is not.

At the turn of the century when Black children were given the opportunity for an education, they walked miles just to go to school. They endured the obstacles and hardship for decades only to experience a dead-end by White America’s system.

Consequentially, many Black youths are dismay and sense the feelings of hopelessness.

They see the mental ignorance in their elders and they do not want the same for themselves.

These children know they are subjugated people and they want to be sovereign and they quite have not put their fingers on how rationally to articulate their feelings to be sovereign and free. Unless White America lets us go things will always be the same and each passing generation things will get worse.

However, God has intervened on our behalf. We are going to become a sovereign people.

Again, education has nothing to do with it. It is all about becoming a sovereign people on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.

Tell me what you think.

Hello Harry,

You said earlier that your argument does not revolve around race. I then pulled the two quotes above to show in your own words that it does. So I did back up my claim that your argument does revolve around race. All you need to do is connect the dots.
Monday, October 5th 2009 at 11:09AM

Hello Stave,

Steve, if you were intelligent you would know that you could not tell me, person (A) what I said. In other words, the person saying something is the only person that can explain what they are saying. Person (B) who is receiving what is being said the most they can do is ask for clarification if they do not understand unless person (A) is being interrogated.

What you are doing is annoying and dishonest. Originally, you asked me a question pertaining to race and I answer that question as it was asked. Now you are trying to say my argument revolves around race. Let me say it for you again. My argument is not about race.

My argument is that Black Americans who are descendents of slaves must become a sovereign people or have complete independence from White America on a portion of this continent that they did call their very own country with borders to pursue life, liberty, happiness and prosperity in our own way.

My argument is that Black Americans must desire to have their hands on their own destiny to deal and resolve their own problems, which has plagued them since slavery.

Do you understand or are you trying to complicate matters.

Harry Watley
Hello Harry,

I will take your word for it then, as what you believe. My concern is education, and I understand your position on that as well. We can agree that we will each work towards our chosen goals.
Monday, October 5th 2009 at 1:52PM
Steve Williams
Hello Steve,

Your concern for the education of my people is useless and a waste of time. You cannot work towards any goals concerning my people. Our time has come to be sovereign and free on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.

Education is secondary since education is no more than learning the secrets of God’s creation. For example, three White Americans just recently won the Nobel Prize in medicine. What they discovered having to do with how cells protect themselves when they divide is a step closer to a cure for cancer. That is education in its unadulterated form. Now, what will happen is that all their notes during research that led them to this discovery will be put into a textbook that will be taught in schools and universities to medical students. This stage is education in its fundamental form.

Naturally, what I have just explained could and will better serve Black Americans only when we become a sovereign people. Since, that if Black Americans had won the Nobel Prize the benefits of the discovery would automatically be taken over by White America. For instance, the discoveries that Dr. George Washington Carver found in the peanut, White America was the sole benefactor.

To summarize the spirit of what I am saying to you Steve is that we want White America out of our lives. We want to be a sovereign people. Do you understand?

Black Americans have not quite grasped the significance of what I am saying. They have not quite come to understand that I am their first genuine prophet who will lead us into sovereignty.

What say you?

Monday, October 5th 2009 at 2:40PM
Harry Watley
I work towards goals for America, and also on an international level. The fact is Harry, you do not know what I am doing, but it is more than just talking. Nor can you stop me from what I am doing.
Monday, October 5th 2009 at 2:48PM
Steve Williams
Hello Steve,

Steve I am not trying to stop you from doing anything outside the parameters of my people, who are Black Americans and descendents of slaves.

Now, if you were trying to do anything within the parameters of Black Americans then you would be automatically wrong.

The world knows that White Americans has a personality of imposing themselves on other people. This was done when White America try to impose themselves on the Vietnamese people and senselessly loss so many American lives including the lives of my people. However, White America was successful imposing themselves on the Korean people.

So, when you say, “I work towards goals for America” you need to put White in front of America and work your goals towards White America and White America is not in need of your services. So, please leave Black Americans alone or just become one of our immigrants of good standards. There were Egyptian immigrants within the Hebrew people. However, they were not trying to lead the Hebrew people anywhere.

Steve, give Black Americans an opportunity to work things out for themselves. I am the way for Black Americans and besides me; there is no one else or any other way. I am Black America’s first genuine prophet since it will take an act of God to do the things I have said that would be done on behalf of Black Americans. We are going to become a sovereign people on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.

Since White America has raised Black Americans from our ancestors of slavery we are today, the people raised and taught by White America only. Therefore, since we are today a savage, self-hating and an un-educated people, it is how White America have raised us. No other race except White America had Black Americans in their possession that we would be the people that we are today. We need to have complete independence from White America. White America among us could only perpetuate the problems of Black Americans.Do you get my point Steve?

What say you?

Steve it is good to see that those people who our president is sending to Chicagfo next week are going to probable try and get some kinds of education reforms for our children.

Because, of us adults trying to do something about the economy, we most likely have taken away some of the things in schools that really interested our young and at their expense. I know a lot of schools out here have closed down the gyms, music, dance, art classes that could not only interest them but keep them busy and creative. some things for them by theyselves.

It has to do with since we moved here a lot of others have come and built their homes in this neighborhood..across the street is a Korean church...things happen. for example

do you believe that anyone who lives on the salary that these people make could live in the same neighborhood as our president? Now I will have you use your own self as the next example,
would you be more comfortable in a neighborhood with peoples of different colors of skin ,but you and they spoked different languages?Wore different types of clothes as the norm what say they wore head dress all the time and you did not? would you be more comfortable there or where those around you had more in common with you?!?

Steve, I look at living in a slum much like living in slavery, a bad marriage, job, family ...do your best to work your way out of it and not stay there and wait for someone to come and do it for you...you will feel better about your self(smile)

I said all of that to say this to you Steve, remember what I told you about W-E like any other race of people are all different?(smile)Some things we can be able to do today and some another day, but never give up hope...

Oh, something just hit me. I am 67 years old, but before the James Brown hit Black and Proud one could get hurt or even killed for calling us Black.(smile) Again, it is more pride in the race than the social label is how I look at this.

Lena Horn once had to pour hot soup on a White lady, for not accepting her as Black. And, yes she got sued for this behavior.(smile)What about Myra cary(probably misspelled)and the hard time she had trying to get her fans to call her Blackand not White. I know my sisters and brothers suffered for people insisting they were not Black. A close friend who is White and have children by a Black man had this great argument with a lady in the cilinic who insisted she was the babysitter because that was not her black child...and Steve I could go on and on and this is why I say it is pride...not the social classification...it is who you have pride in being...and it is only you who can do this yourself for your self...

If there is one thing that gets to me is that "you are the exception"

Steve, who does anyone think they are to define who you are to you as if you don't exist except in their minds...OOOOOH that makes me scream.and to you Steve. If it is found out that you have black blood will that make you someone other than who you are?!? I will still call you my brother for as long as you give me the same respect that I give to you...

As for the Harrys and all others stuck on planet Stuck on Stupid, sometimes I have enough of my valuable time to just go along with their "Begging The Question"...logic states that this is just argueing in a circle...One can never come up with the correct answer as the question has already had an answer by that person before they put it forth and it gets change at their will...this is why I have made up my mind to evey now and then put one of Hary's own quotes up to what he has said in relations to how his own quate has been proven false with his own words...

This is why a subjective argument can never hold up...have you seen how I tell Harry some times to remember the lie and who he told it to.(smile)It is to his own self.LOL

Keep on Steve, one day I will have you looking at things from the black point of view...actually it is really not hard to do once one learns that we are each different from each other just like any other race of people are...

Please do Steve and keep all of us posted. I will try to keep you posted on some of what I see all week .O.K.

You know me and how I am always thinking(smile)...there is the direct hand of our president in this some how, because the right-wingers in D.C. are not jumping into this as I expected them to do...and for me this means something is going on behind the scene. I do know our president is a street fighter...this is why "I" see this as something good will come to those poor children to help them get more pride and self-esteem.(smile)

As me, that OLD WOMAN who walked to school all of those miles carrying my lunch sack, is one of the main reasons, I nor my family or my friends will give up this freedom, land and peace and contentment not to mention security from an oppressor or anyone trying to talk us intoor forcing us into a 21st century slavery on land that we never wanted to be on, needed, ect....(smile)

SLAVERY BY WAY OF BEING KIDNAPPED AND HAVING NO SAY A S THE RIGHT OF JUST BEING A HUMAN BEING IS STILL SLAVERY EVEN IF IN THE CENTURY AND IT COMES UNDER THE NAME OF S-O-V-E-R-E-I-G-N.LOL

Steve, the quote of John Whitehead is the code that I was taught at the age of 16 going to our first sit-in ...for a while there I thought it all for nort...but, to look at life in that light is to not have full and complete faith in our president, and how he got to be where he is...where it is up to us to make him safe and successful...

Even that tragic and needless death in Chicago not long ago is going to make this country a better place, TOMORROW(smile)And, why is this, it is because this has hit HOME as never before...this is America and we can do much better than to have the world look at us through this eye...We will all see as this is all for the next generation...and, this is the way it should be!!!!!!

Hey Steve would our using this Education Reform blog of your be good to be used as a part of the future when the first amendment gets brought back before the Supreme Court as more proof that more restrictions must be put on that freedom?!?(smile)

Or, maybe the POPE can use it in his next speech on how religion is going to become extent if somethings are not done soon...Harry does make me start to believe the POPE does have something when he spoke on this matter last year at that big unity Conference in Europe...

me I will see you on your next blog, my brother...and a great one would be if you can find thae tape of tose young black students that were on CNN this morning about 11am my time. they are the children that made that first song about him when he was running for president. they go to that school for poor children taht was started by this White man.I forget if it was in New York or not but they made a record, I do believe about Mr. Obama.

NOw this was an on purpose political song and dance as a slap in the face of tose right-wingers about our children's innocent song during black history month. It was about the health care reform bill and in it they even say Joe wilson lied...it is priceless. I do hope you can find it...these gop people get every thing they try to do against our president thrown right back at them in spades.LOL

Please, I hope you can find it. this program is on CNN every week day in the morning, I believe for three hours...then Rick Sanchez comes on at 12pm

good night...how is the job going...

Well one thing about Philly is it is the first place to have an African-American study department required in college and now it is the first to have it required in grade schools.EDUCATION REFORM BIG TIME...

This in part has our young college ages backing something new, called CHANGE in America. Now all across this country if their is an ethnic group they have their history in America taught in truth about how and why they should have much pride in their race, culture, etc.

Pride in fact, culture is one of the greatest self-esteem builders. This teaches the individual to not bring shame on any of this including their own family. Like ever thing else, it is going to take time and more efforts to allow this country to begin to make truth and reality a norm in our society. Right now it is just this still dominated by that old need to keep each other down by: race, religion and skin color one up manship...

Please take special note of the lesson of where the Olympics is going to be and it is not a White majority country...

It is not in America and the right-wing will never admit that they may have played a great part in this going to a dark skinned majority country...they were putting our country down by way saying what a hard ship an Olympic would be to our country...WAKE UP...go to as many resorces as one can to get the truth, reality about how tis country is going to hell in a hand basket, but it is at the expence of those who refuse to allow racial pride, culture pride has come to an end...again, we must look to how to make it better for the coming generations...

THOSE MEDIA SOUND BITES WORK IN MANY DIRECTIONS...FOR OR AGAINST THIS COUNTRY.....

Our ONE vote makes us the government...lets start acting like it...

Oh, and one more truth and reality...while we in this country are fighting a race, class , wealth wars...the Japanese is still raising the gpa bar out of our reach...again go to many resorces for the truth and reality...there are too many variables in this and one of the greatese is our refusing to start with our own self as the problem and blaming others as the solution.(smile) WAKE UP...
