A LITTLE TOO LARGE
Huntville, ALA 10.01.2009
[SOURCE: USA TODAY]
A recent study by the Centers for Disease control and Prevention concluded what many Americans have seen, and known for years: Obesity is a major problem in the USA. Now it's been pinpointed that
[We'll show yu fat meat is greasy!]
Southerners and African Americans in the south are grouped to be "A little too large!" The study concludes that 37% of Southern Black Folks are obsese. In other places like Mississippi and Alabama, it's about 40%. Liping Pan, epidemiologist who is the lead author of the study believes that Blacks and Hispanics have the second-most highest obesity rate. His overview is that since neither group has adequate safe places such as gyms or health clubs that promote regular physical activity. He also noted that food choices are less healthier and that social pressures may also be another factor for obesity among Southerners.
Early this summer, Dr. Regina Benjamin became the first African American woman appointed to the American Medical Association board of trustees to serve as surgeon general, however Dr. Regina is noted for being overweight. It is hopes that she will be an mentor and use her obesity to to give hope to shaping and toning thiner figures and inspire many Southern Blacks to be healty and become active and fit.

FindHelp TN
SHORT AND BRIEF
NEW NETWORK OF SOCIAL INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE FOR TENNESSEEANS
[Place your arrow key on the picture]
Sitting at my desk many days I'm approached by Memphians over the phones and in person who are looking for programs that aid and help them with social issues. Often, I just turn them away because actually I don't know where to send them to find information. Now, thanks to our Tennessee Governor, Phil Bredesen there is a new line of communtation opened call FindHelpTN. This is a centralized source of information for state and federal assistance programs that includes eligibility, screenings, application instructions and localized location information for the administering agency.
The service is aimed at assisting the community based providers to connect those who are in need of help with state programs and services. The FindHelp user will follow a 10 short step questionaire that covers criteria from household income, employment status to insurance and disability questions. In most cases it's noted that the questionaire only takes brief 10 to 15 minutes. The program is user friendly and anyone can do it if they have access to the internet and a printer. Those who do not can see organizations that have computers, like local libraries, churches or community organizations.
A person can find out about Tennessee programs such as CoverTN, CoverRX, AccessTN, Food Stamps, TANF /Families First, SSI/Social Security and a host of others.
This is surely a handy tool for those who live in Memphis, and others in the State of Tennessee. I'll be spreading the use of this new program. I know too, all my help comes from the Lord I seek Him first! Where can you FindHelp where else... there's a web address it's short and brief visit:
