It was Uncle Sam who first gave Iran nuclear equipment (428 hits)

A nuclear reactor was sold to Iran as part of President Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" program. But even then the US had concerns about what might happen if the Shah fell to 'domestic dissidents.'

For all the recent uproar over Iran's nuclear program, little attention has been paid to the fact that the country which first provided Tehran with nuclear equipment was the United States.

In 1967, under the "Atoms for Peace" program launched by President Eisenhower, the US sold the Shah of Iran's government a 5-megawatt, light-water type research reactor. This small dome-shaped structure, located in the Tehran suburbs, was the foundation of Iran's nuclear program. It remains at the center of the controversy over Iranian intentions, even today.

That is because Iran says it needs more fuel for the reactor, which it insists it uses for basic research, and to produce medical isotopes. And the Tehran Research Reactor runs on uranium that is some 20 percent U-235 – an enrichment level higher than that currently produced by Iran's Natanz enrichment facility.

Now Iran has agreed in principle to send most of its current stockpile of low-enriched uranium abroad, so that some other country – most likely Russia – can produce this more-highly enriched fuel for them. In any case, that is what US and European officials say occurred at this week's meeting between Iran and six western powers.

Such a move would consume some two-thirds of Iran's existing stockpile of 3,200 pounds of low-enriched uranium.

The Shah of Iran was a US ally. But even so, the US had qualms about providing him with nuclear technology. The worries were very like those of today: officials thought it possible that Iran would build on nuclear power programs to develop nuclear weapons technology.

A 1974 Defense Department memorandum, recently declassified and posted on-line by the National Security Archive, noted that stability in Iran depended heavily on the Shah's personality. Should he fall, "domestic dissidents or foreign terrorists might easily be able to seize any special nuclear materials stored in Iran for use in bombs".

Iran planned to obtain up to 20 large nuclear reactors in the next several decades, the memo noted. These might produce large quantities of material that could be converted for bomb use.

"An aggressive successor to the Shah might consider nuclear weapons the final item needed to establish Iran's complete military dominance of the region," noted the memo.

In 1978, President Carter and the Shah struck a deal that would have sent eight US-made light-water reactors to Iran, pending Congressional approval. A year later, the Iranian revolution forced the Shah from power and the deal fell apart.

Hello friends,

All of you have made some good points. Earl you asked this question, “I am saddened by President Obama stance on Israel and the continued genocide of the Palestinians.”

Well, Earl you know that Obama is president of the United States of America and the United States of America is White America.

Whether he feels indifferent to the White status quo, he is their president and that means he is pressured to do what pleases them.

Am I right or am I wrong?

Earl, there is not one country that is now our enemy that was not our friends until they found out that the powers that be in America is only out to find more peoples to allow them to abuse them...if you notice those that still refuse to not be abused are the ones called: enemy, terrorist and the majority of those in and out of America still refuse to research what they still call the truth that someone told them is the truth and namely our politicians who themselves now that we have a Black president are now telling say a certain country in South America to not go along with any thing America tells them.(smile)

...what does any of us think Mr. Obama was talking about when he was saying he needs all of us to help him take our government back?...How many of us just out and out refuse to take charge of our own ONE vote and take it our of the hands of the best and most seen campaign PROMISE?

How many of us has contacted our own state's politicians on this health care reform bill to ask say how much of the $1.4 million a day that the insurance lobby is handing out did he or she take in the last week , month, 3 years?!?(smile)

Earl, it is not my duty nor my need to even try to change anyone..."I" live my daily life as an example of :peace, happiness, security, contentment, positive achievments. Some one can follow my example or they can not. It is alwyas their choices to take the easy way out and just place the blame on all but themselves. They have the same rights to be the best person that they can be or not...and Earl, "I" never blame anyone for doing what they believe is best for them...be it something I agree with or not...again, it is up to me to provide my survival needs in life and not someone else.

A person who does the waiting for someone else or something else to provide the things they want/need are loosers where "I" am concerned, because someon with self-esteem will never control over their lives to be farmed out like this!!!!!

What do you think I mean when I keep saying that eveyone is responsible for their own behavior that is the cause and the effects on their lives and their enviornment and not me?!?(smile)

You may find what you want in a Harry, but never in/from me.LOL

Now as no one on this planet, country wisethat is, are not going to tell China what they can or can not do...so help your self if you want to stop Iran.(smile)

So as you said, I followed the money...and it started with you the TAX PAYER...or did you for one second believe it came out of Bush's or Obama's personal bank accounts???...Grow Up...

Earl, why are you saddened by our president's not sending Israel any money for fighting a war they have been fighting sinc(remember me saying it is the first war in the Bible).
This what the president and Israeli Prime Minister is at odds with is our president is siding with the very peoples in Israel that are themselves trying to get peace. They keep having demostrations in Israel trying to get their government to stop building those homes so this war can come to an end long enough to get to have some peace talks...

Those who want war are the ones who just voted that person back in who is sure to have the war started as it did the last time he was in that same ofice as Prime Minister...I repeat, all our president is saying if you can fight a war without the money from the United States as you always have been getting then go right ahead and do it...Our president can't even start a war by his own country as only Congress can do this and Congress is the only ones who can finance a war for this country...

But, as all of the peoples that have oil are Muslims or Russian(right next door to Iran) or south America (friends with Iran)then Isral is going to have a problem fighting a war so they must blame someone who will believe them...LOL..are you willing to do any thing but blame our president????(smile)

You don't watch tv but, if you care to check out what I just said go to the web sites of those average Israeli citizens in Israel who are going to the street to try and get their politicians to go back to those peace talks...well those who like over here are not in prison or on the way there...

Earl, please go back and reread what I said. but, this is alright and why, I always say go to more than one resorce to get what someone "TELLS" you each and every time, because emotional, subjective proofs change with the issue...

You said follow the money which I did...now are you changing that only one taxpayer's money can support the money aides to Israel...I said that our president has told Israel they can conitnue as they have been doing since the first war in the Bible but they would not be doing it with the money aide from America....and, may be tihis time around Earl, you will be able to get it(smile)

Me, I never tend to take any thing personal. I study all things and if they are fine with me I make it a part of my daily life. this is why I am so after learning every thing I can wheather I like it or not...wisdom comes over a life time and not in one comment form anyone icluding me, myself.(smile)

This is only a site to dialogue and not for me to get/find meaning for my existance...WAKE UP...are you calling the Israelis God-Satan if so which one is the human Israelis I speak of on your post about Iran????? As, some say, book learning is not worth a plug nickle if one does not have any common sense...

SMILE...and I am so glad I never said such a thing...all I said is the president has told the Prime Minister that the money pit is dry, because he is not for starting/helping to start a W-A-R...this is all I said , because if he said any thing else, I did not hear him say it.LOL

Me I only quote him when I hear and see the words coming right our of his mouth to my ears.(smile)cuts out all of the politic oneupmanships...YES I DO...and probably what has you so mixed up, maybe???????
