The Power of a Penny (801 hits)

The Power of a Penny
I bargained with life for a penny
And life would pay no more
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store
For life is just an employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.
Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich

For those of you who have not read Think and Grow Rich, I invite you to do so. In fact, I believe that every individual should read it in the 6th grade.

Are you thinking the type of thoughts that will bring you much or little. This simple poem says a lot about how you think about your life. Do you have a plan? Do you have a plan “B”? Now, let’s get back to a penny. Here’s a question for you. Would you rather have $1 million dollars today or would you rather take a penny and have it double every day for one month?
These days require thinking, re-thinking, and deep thinking. Business as usual doesn’t apply. If you really want to create a future and legacy for your family and future generations, how you think now is critical. Everyone has 168 hours in their week, including Oprah, Bill Gates, and President Obama, what sets people apart is what they do with their time.

Even though I am using a penny as an example, this is more about a philosophy for living. What is your philosophy? “Your philosophy is what you know, how you hold it, and how it affects what you do,” says Jeff Olson in the book, The Slight Edge. In order to have a more expansive philosophy, you need to increase your knowledge, open your mind, and become more emotionally mature.

What is your philosophy about money. I often hear people say things like, “I’m just trying to get over or trying to make ends meet,” not a very empowering philosophy. You have probably heard the saying, “Job means, Just Over Broke,” and I am sure you want more out of life than that. I’m not against having a job, I’m just saying, you probably really want more than most jobs can offer, but your job can be a vehicle for fueling your true desires. As the job scene changes, many people are going to have to have multiple streams of income. I talked to two people today who said that they realize that they need more than one avenue of income. One had just retired and the other is in the travel business, both have multiple revenue producing streams. Like it or not, it is the wave of the future.

Now I have heard wealthy people say, “I don’t look at anything that doesn’t have residual or passive income capabilities.”

Let’s look at that statement. Residual income is income that keeps coming even when you stop working. Some examples might be intellectual properties, network marketing, real estate, investments in stocks and bonds, inventions, and being a general agent or employer; the beauty is that the goal is to be able to have something that produces income, even when you are asleep, on vacation, or even dead. Residual income is mostly will-able, unlike having a job, which you cannot will to your family if you die. So, a growth philosophy would be to look for opportunities or ideas which create passive or residual income. Residual and passive income are key to sustained wealth because it is perpetual and efficient. The poem above summarizes it very well, life will give you what you ask for, it’s all about your philosophy.

By the way, if you had taken a penny doubled daily for month, at the end of that month you would have $10,737,418.24!

Hello Ms. Dixon,

Why it is that when I visit your website, 7 principles, to post a blog, my blogs would have to be approved by you when I could post the same blog instantly on BIA? Do you not think that you are treating your members as if they were children?

How is that right?

Tell me what you think.
