Children Who Read Succeed (1114 hits)

In an information age that offers an explosion of technology reading skills is one sound way to help children to succeed in school. Too often parents set children in front of a television or computer when they have not learned some of the essential reading skills. Reading brings out a child's creativity and imagination. Once students obtain a joy of reading they are like a sponge absorbing all of the knowledge that they can. It time to dust of the books in your home and share them with children who have no books in their homes. Every home should have hundreds of books for children to enjoy. Some children will go back and read a book four or five times. The school administrators, teachers and school counselors can share books from their homes. How can you contribute to this effort?

Hello Brother Jones!! My son started pre K and he loves it. I still have your book and it's really helped me a lot. My son on yesterday ran to his room when I told him that it was time to do what I call 'homework'.

Of course it's not real home work sent by his teacher, but I sit him down at his desk after school and have him practice writing his name as well as practice tracing and writing lettes of the alphabet and numbers.

My husband laughed when I told him what the kid did...so my husband said our son is beginning to understand that life isn't all fun and games like before he started school. I also want to let you know that our preschooler is reading simple words and is so familiar with the phonetics of the letters and attempts to sound out unfamilar words. He picks up books from his reading center at home without me coaxing him. Hey he has a good example in me and his dad, because he sees us reading all the time. I continue to check out books from the library for him as well as I order books from the school scholatic book club although my husband didn't understand why I would order when I could buy a computer program... but I told him the importance of reading books to instill a love for reading.

Great to read how you are encouraging your children to read. You made a very important point when you stated that the children see you and your husband read. It demonstrates that reading is a valuable activity. One additional step that adds value is reading to children. I suspect that you already read to your children. It is a very enjoyable family activity.
