McCain pushes Obama for a Pardon (638 hits)

Senator John McCain is pressing President Obama to give a long awaited pardon to fighter Jack Johnson. Johnson was imprisioned for his romantic relationship with a white woman. However, the White House has declined to comment on the letter. McCain says he feels confident that Johnson will be considered a pardon, even after the fighter's death. His hope is that President Obama will review the letter for a pardon and give grant. McCain stated that he has not personally spoken to the president and hope soon that a pardon will be granted.

Johnson was convicted in 1913 for violating the Mann ACt with maned it illegal to transport women across state line for immoral purposes. He fled the country but agreed years later to serve a 10 month jail sentence. In 2004 filmaker Ken Burns started a committee to help pardon Jack Johnson. Still to this day the pardon has not been granted. McCain says his hope is to right a wrong of racial discrimination.

This has nearly 100 years ago, do you think a pardon would really matter now? If so, what benefit will or if it would have on wrong imprisionments in the future?

In 1913 the white women with johnson were prostitutes. He transported them across state lines. He was guilty of that Decadent Act.
First, McCain needs to get a pardon for Muhammad Ali--Ali lives in Phoenix and needs his Anti-Vietnam war Pardon--

I see this is totally futile for Jack Johnson. Perhaps McCain is trying to show another side of himself. I detect he has some purpose for asking his pardon. I'm a little cautious of his intent. Thank you Robert!

Clark, you've explained this very well, even showing the act itself. I suppose a pardon could be granted, not that it would make much difference now! That's why I feel it's futile in that perpective. However, pardons like this one may need to be approached wih discretion. That may be why Obama hasn't answered the call to the letter? You've made some excellent points..Jack Johnson was a great fighter! He was bold in his time and era, had plently of nerve dating openly with white women. Good or bad, I say he had plenty of nerve when things back then wasn't allowed!

I'm with you on this one...why didn't President Bush's admin pardon him? McCain is up to something for sure. Why has the man been unwilling to come together on other more pressing issues that the citizens of this country face?!
