“Advocates of Public Option and Single Payer to Endorse H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act And Express Hope for Progressive Changes Before Health Reform Legislation is Signed Into Law”
Washington, DC – On November 7, Congresswoman Jackson Lee and other Congressional leaders plan to host a press conference to endorse H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act and express hope for progressive changes to health reform legislation headed to the floor of the House of Representatives for passage as early as Saturday. Physicians, nurses, patients, and advocates are set to join Representative Jackson Lee and her colleagues to encourage the House to pass health reform legislation in the most robust manner possible.
“Physicians and other health care professionals are on the front lines of the health care debate every day. We see the pain and frustration of hardworking Americans who face financial collapse, physical suffering, and sometimes the loss of their life simply because they don’t have decent health care coverage” said Doctor Sanjeev Sriram, Health Reform outreach Coordinator for the 20,000-member National Physicians Alliance, one of the groups set to participate in tomorrow’s press conference.
“Over the summer, some predicted the public option was DOA. I am pleased that the plan to offer a public health insurance option remains alive in this bill as it provides more choice and competition in the health insurance market. However, I join with those who continue to press leaders in the House and Senate to incorporate a proposal to allow states to opt for more progressive public insurance plans such as Congressman Conyers’ single payer plan, which I co-introduced along with Congressman Dennis Kucinich.
Rep. Jackson Lee said: “As far as the motivation for this effort, let me share that in my home state of Texas, the situation is dire. Texas has the highest rate of uninsured. In Harris County, where I live, one in three adults lives without health insurance. More than 6 million fellow Texans do not have health coverage and that number is increasing daily. I find this highly unacceptable.”
