Does Precious stereotype big black women? (224 hits)

Excitement surrounding the film Precious continues to grow as the gripping tale of a young woman’s struggle to overcome her past opens in theaters. The film’s main character is Claireece “Precious” Jones, an abused teen mother who is dark-skinned, overweight and illiterate.

Fears that the movie would be viewed as exploitative, or suggest that all black women are like Precious nearly prevented the film from seeing the big screen.

Honestly George, I'm personally sick and tired of everything that shows what a lot of young women of color ( and in other cases) are or have dealt with, that it boils down to if we are being stereotyped or not. If she was lighted-skinned, skinny and still illiterate, would that be an issue. Or better yet, if she was at the top of her class, still abused, overweight, from a two parent home and still got pregnant. Would it be a problem then? and if so what would it be?
