Young black Mormon man fears he might give all Black Americans a bad name (244 hits)

Living in Utah by way of Florida, I come across many African American / Mormon/LDS stories. I found an article early this year about a young black Mormon/LDS man named Marcus McCoy, a recent BYU graduate from Louisiana, who was interviewed about race and the Mormon/LDS Church.

He was asked if being at BYU was difficult, he was quoted as saying this:
“It can be difficult," McCoy said. "Because I'm black, I have to live to a higher standard. If I give a bad example, it can be perpetuated. People take the example of one black person and stereotype the whole culture.”

My question is this – Have you ever been in a situation as a black American, where you felt you had to live a higher standard or you would be guilty of giving all black Americans a bad name?

clark or steve are better at research, but Mormons until 1980's did not even consider african people Human?
and they had to change to keep their tax-exempt status.

now personally, mormon women do cover, do not drink alcohol, no drugs, clean, family oriented, love to pray, i believe; no pigEaters, and men have more than one wife.----
they are closer to me in personal and family; than a southern baptist, catholic, presbytarian,anglican-----quaker, baptist, blackthisorthatchristian--etc.
I love to talk to mormons or morons at my door, but they seem to leave quickly when I ask them about their history and primitive Thinking.

now to the Blog question Mr. Weston;----your friend in the story is INSANE if he has to worry about what they think of his Color---1980--is 20-30years ago,
i would think they would have the Holy Apostle Popes they have; go to each african home and hut and explain their late spiritual; "Harry" Revelation on Color.

It hasn't brought African Americans any more shame than they are already bringing to themselves. Supporting a symbol of racism is no worse than not supporting your own against it. Me.
