Teaching Black Women To Embrace Breast-Feeding (956 hits)

by Jennifer Ludden

American mothers as a whole do not breast-feed their babies as much as health experts would like, but African-American moms have the lowest rates of all — by some measures, they are half as likely to nurse as whites and Hispanics.

The federal government, some hospitals and nonprofits are trying different strategies to close this nursing gap, though no one seems sure exactly why the disparity exists. Read more...

Nursing Rates And Demographics

Nursing Rates And Demographics

For children born in 2006, a smaller percentage of African-American women exclusively breast-fed for three months.

Hello Steven,

Do you not understand that we, Black Americans are in a dire situation across the border?

I told you that God has inspired me to know and anointed me that our only permanent solution is to desire to become a sovereign people or have complete independence on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders.

Do you think that what I am saying is a joke?

Tell me what you think

Hello Ms. Burgess,

Well, you tell me what position we are in that Black women have to be encourage to breast-feed our children since every baby a Black woman have belongs to our entire race.

Do you think that just spread in the information is good enough? I should say not!

Do you not see we need to be in a situation to personally deal with our racial disparities?

Tell me what you think, sweetheart.

Steven, very interesting. I can't think of why this should be so, because the advantages are widely know, as well as the common concern women have about their figures. Do you have any ideas? Marquerite?

Steve, There are a variety of reasons why women do not breast feed and most have nothing to do with a woman's figure (if your referring to her body). Not sure if your wife chose to breast-feed or not. If she did not, then I would say ask her about her reasons for not doing so. If she did, then this would not apply to her. I chose not to because I did not want to period.

Well, my first wife is the one who bore my 5 sons and she breast fed all of them longer than 3 months, according to their individual needs. It did affect the shape of her breasts. So perhaps I misspoke based on my personal experience, but I thought this was a common reason why women choose not to breastfeed. However I am a man and it would not be the first time I've misunderstood women. My second wife, had she had our child, would not have been the least interested in breastfeeding. The current recommendation of 3 months I just figured was a way to give the baby the advantage of immunization without such a great change to the mother's breasts. Maybe I've been looking at too many Victoria's Secret catalogs. No, I am not trying to be offensive, these days I am just an observer when it come to women, just interested in knowing.

Seasons Greetings,
I felt the need to post this article because the future of our nation, bro. Harry, is our children. There are long range goals and immediate goals. One of the immediate goals of our health and what better place to start addressing our health than our children's health.

America or better put, western culture, has made what should be natural perverse and the perverse natural. Unfortunately this even means the Black man and woman. While breastfeeding is a natural thing that all mammals do for their young, in America, for diabolical reasons, breastfeeding is frowned on.

There are so many advantages to breastfeeding for the woman, baby and even the father. Below is a short list.
* The Babies immune system is strengthened by the mothers breast milk. This saves money that would go toward: doctors bills, gas, medicine and buying milk or what is sold as baby milk;
* The baby sucking on the breast pulls the mother uterus back into place sooner causing healing to take place sooner;
* An even stronger bond between mother and child;
* For the father, a sense of knowing that his child will be healthy, apposed to wondering how the chemicals in the substitute milk will affect his child.

The list can go on. The only set back, after the baby(s) are done nursing the breast are not as firm, but what woman or father would take the later over the former - oh that's right, we live in America, home of the vain and conceited.

Take it from someone who child was breastfeed, I hardly every took my child to the doctor expect for routine checkups.

The breast is the best!

Also, it is a natural form of birth control.

My second child was not breast feed, although her mother did try. Breastfeeding is not as easy as it looks, therefore any mother thinking about it should get as much information about it as possible.

Breastfeeding can hurt, it can be difficulty to get the baby to latch on, the mother's health my not allow her to feed the child. No one is judging here, however, if you are able to breastfeed do it for the baby - it is nature way.

Forgot about the Birth Control aspect. Best to check with the doctor to see how that works or you may have to prepare to breastfeed in another 9 months.

Motherhood is sacred, but as I said before, American is anti-family, anti-mother, anti-father - anti-God.

This is why we, as a people, must recapture our culture! And ditch the western, white way of life and living. It does not work for us!

Hello Steven,

You said this, “This is why we, as a people, must recapture our culture! And ditch the western, white way of life and living. It does not work for us!”

Steven it is more then ditching the White way of life and living because it does not work for us. It is about Black Americans becoming a civilized people and to do this we need to be a sovereign people having complete independence. A necessary part of being civilized is the need to be around each other, working with each other, teaching ourselves, understanding each other and dealing with our own problems. People that are subjugated, suppressed and discriminated against are people that civilization is kept from them developing into a civilized people.

Mr. Farrakhan, not all of our civic leaders including church pastors and the NAACP understand the fundamentals of civilization. They talks about education, better healthcare for Blacks, that the criminal justice system discriminate against Blacks, they talk about the lack of better parenting and the list goes on. All of these dilemmas are because we are not a civilized people. Again, to become civilize we need out of our present abuse that have been going on for the past 500 years. We need complete independence on a portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders. Being civilize is unique because only people could civilize themselves. One group of people cannot civilize another group of people, racially speaking that is. The way I am treated on this site is a testament that we are yet to be a civilized people.

We, as a people have never had the benefits to be civilized since we have always been spread apart all over White America. In early slavery, it was mandatory that we never socialize with each other. In other words, slaves on one plantation could not socialize with slaves on the plantation next to them even if they were mothers and daughters. Therefore, how could today we be a civilized people? We cannot be a civilized people since there are more Black on Black crimes than White on Black crimes. It is evident that what I am saying is true. Consequentially, our only permanent solution is that we desire to become a sovereign people and only God could provide this for us as was done with Moses and the Hebrew people. Am I making any good sense with you?

Our entire situation is deserving of God’s serious consideration and we have that consideration most recently.

Tell me what you think.

I tried to breast feed my son, but because of poor instruction from the nurses at the hospital or perhaps from my own impatience I abandoned it. I felt like a failure, but my sister in law breastfed both of her children successfully.

The reason "I" keep saying a lot of what "I" do here and other places is because there is such an all out assault on those who keep trying to get us the African-Americans to never give up our direct ties to the mother land...BY THOSE, I MEAN MINISTER FARRAKHAN AND WRIGHT AND MALCOM X, the Black Panthers, ANGELA DAVIS , B.H.O., ECT.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve jsut showed how he has more knowledge about our direct ties to Africa than Steven...
