Just a few people I want to acknowledge as the New Year approaches. I want to thank:
* President Barack Obama: I don't care what people say, he has handled his first year in office with such grace and class. He has basically tackled more issues (the war, the economy, the banking industry, Wall Street, unemployment, the housing market, global energy...I could go on here) in one year than the Bush Administration did in eight years.
* Roderick Scott: He was found NOT guilty of murder in my hometown of Rochester, New York. Scott, who is black, shot and killed a 17-year-old white youth, who was breaking into cars in his neighborhood, and when he was on Scott's property told the youth and his friend who were both high and drunk to leave. The youths approached him and Scott felt threatened and shot in self-defense. His handgun was registered. Many thought he should have been found guilty. Not so. When someone threatens your life, home or family: YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF. Case closed.
* Oprah Winfrey: Haters, you need to step off!!! She has taken black professionalism to a new level. She helped me to dream BIG!!! The movies, her show, her philanthropy, the school in Africa... she could have stopped there. The "O" factor can make or break anything. Who else could get America reading again or make movies go number one? After 25 years, she needs to be selfish and think of herself. She's given the world a lot. I will miss her in 2010.
My family, friends, and extended family: Thanks for helping me back to good health and for all the love and support.
My family at about...time magazine and The Buffalo Challenger: Thanks for letting my voice be heard through your publications via my stories and my column for more than 20 years.
God: For giving me so many gifts that I plan to put to good use.
Dr. Lisa: Who has made it her mission to get me back to good health.
The staff at Strong and Highland hospitals: for easing my fears when I needed medical attention and told me my coming in was a good thing.
Bubba and the guys: For helping with projects around my house.
Marcus, Barbara, and the guys at Tops: who made my grocery shopping a bit easier.
Cynthia Benjamin and my peers at MomsLikeMe.com: Thanks for your continued support, the laughs, prayers, and well wishes. QM is back.
My church family and Reverend Kenneth Q. James: For keeping my family in your prayers and coming to our aid. :)
