Here we go with a national discussion about superficial nonsense!
Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid described Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign as having a real chance at winning the first black President of the U. S, because he was a light-skinned African-American "with no Negro dialect." The statements appear in a new book, "
Game Change," by Time magazine's Mark Halperin and New York magazine's John Heilemann.
Your best white friend thinks those kinds of thoughts, but they just don't say it. Let me tell you some other things they think, too, but just don't say to you. We behave like animals and kill ourselves with guns, drugs and HIV Aids; our families are dismal and black men have little shame about walking away from their little children in droves.
These are critical elements that speak to the quality of our lives; elements that we can and must fix, not for their benefit, but for ours. Talking about the diversity of our skin color and dialect is nonsense! And those who want us to continue our decline are happy that the discussion is about such trivial and shallow conversations; hoping it will keep us from directing our attention to the important stuff.
Yes there needs to be a discussion about race relations in America and the way our culture has arrived, the history being made today--in contrast to the rich history provided for us by the giants of our past. The discussion needs to be STOP! Stop asking and expecting more respect from outsiders than we are providing for ourselves. If we don't get this headed in a new direction, we will become marginalized, silenced, and powerless.
