Reared In New Orleans, Louisiana In The Early 1900s, Mahalia Jackson Began Singing Gospel In The Church Choir.
In 1945, Her Recording Of "Move On Up A Little Higher," Sold Almost 2 Million Copies And Brought Her Immediate Fame. The Successful Recording Led To Appearances At Carnegie Hall And On "The Ed Sullivan Show," As Well As A European Tour.
Toward The End Of Her Life Jackson Became A Civil Rights Activist And Author. In 1970 She Wrote A Cookbook Titled "Mahalia Jackson Cooks Soul." Two Years Earlier, She Sang At The Funeral Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., A Request He Made Prior To His Death.

I was also glad when I learned that is was her who trained Aretha Franklin to sing...until then there was alwyas something I was trying to put my hands on hearing Ms Franklin singing which nagged at me for many, many years.LOOOOOOOL
