I'm asking this question for several reasons. It appears to me that many people will place a takeout order or stop and grab a bucket of KFC before they will take out a pot or pan and whip up a quick meal. I hear too many men complain that today's modern woman doesn't know how to cook. Frankly, I'm inclined to believe them.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a modern woman. On my lunch breaks, I would come home from my job and prep a meal or get one started. My hubbie didn't understand that you can't have a five-year-old wait patiently to eat dinner, you'd have to feed them a snack. I'd take out frozen meat the night before. I would plan out meal ideas for the whole week. I HATE hearing my children complain that they are hungry and there's nothing to eat.
My girlfriend recently sent me some 15-minute recipes via the Internet. She gave me some great new ideas for dinner. I also took on the task the last two years to rid my house of things I've used for meal preparation. White bread and soda are gone; hello... wheat bread. You'll find more chicken and fish in my freezer as well as wheat bread. There are snacks like raisins, peanuts, and granola in my pantry. I loved my crock pot before I love it even more now.
These days, I'm checking out more cookbooks and tend to cook meals that will last a few days. My family has noticed the changes and they are more vocal about what meals they'd like me to prepare. They even help out more in the kitchen.
The reality is that cooking involves more than microwaves. Honestly, cooking can be a MAJOR chore if you don't know how to do it well. Or if you wait until the last-minute to do it. Everyone has time constraints. I get up early usually and do "things" around my home. Yesterday, I was up at 7 a.m. on a Saturday and did my usual household chores plus cooked and worked on a new short story.
My youngest came up to me and complained that she was hungry. I had to remind her that there were things to pick. She had to learn to be self-sufficient and choose something because my name wasn't Hazel. She munched on some carrots and brussell sprouts with dip.
Women aren't the only ones who should be able to burn in the kitchen; men need to start cooking more, too. I say this because frankly what if you don't get married? You need to be able to take care of yourself. If your mate is working outside of the house and you come home from work first and still expect HER to have dinner on the table for you...something's wrong. You shouldn't be waiting on her; you should get dinner started.
