RACHEL MADDOW STUNS GOP REP BY CALLING OUT HIS HYPOCRISY. Meet the Press, Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 (408 hits)

“YOU WERE TOUTING A GREEN TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAM, TALKING ABOUT HOW GREAT THAT WAS GOING TO BE FOR YOUR DISTRICT” SHE SAID, “BUT YOU VOTED AGAINST THE BILL THAT CREATED THAT GRANT.”

A heated exchange took place during NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday when MSNBC host Rachel Maddow accused Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) of hypocrisy for railing against a spending bill in public while touting its benefits in his home district.

Appearing alongside each other during a panel session, Maddow pivoted from a discussion on job creation to note that Schock had appeared at an event on Friday touting a grant program that he had voted against.

"You, in your district, I just read that you were at a community college touting a $350,000 green technology education program, talking about how great that was going to be for your district," she said. "You voted against the bill that created that grant. That's happening a lot with Republicans sort of taking credit for things that Democratic bills do and then Republicans simultaneously touting their votes against them and trashing them. That, I think, is a problem that needs to be resolved within your caucus. Because you seem like a very nice person but that is a very hypocritical stance to take."

A somewhat taken-aback Schock insisted that Republicans were "not consulted on the stimulus bill" and shouldn't be blamed for the lack of a bipartisan vote for its passage. This didn't really get to Maddow's point.

"I think the argument that liberals are making is absolutely ridiculous," he said. "With all due respect, Rachel, does that mean you are going to give back your Bush tax cuts that you continue to rail against. The fact of the matter is our country operates and is governed by a majority. And I, along with almost all my Republican colleagues and a good number of Democrats, have voted against the stimulus, the omnibus and all this runaway spending. But we lost those battles in the House... At the end of the day my constituents and their children and grandchildren will be on the hook for the deficit being created by this majority and they deserve to their fair share of federal spending."

New York Times columnist David Brooks -- appearing alongside Maddow and Schock -- chimed in to suggest that the argument over who should take credit for the stimulus' successes exemplified what was wrong with Washington.

But that debate seems likely to only grow in prominence leading up to the 2010 elections. This past week, the Washington Times reported that a host of Republican lawmakers were doing exactly the same thing that Schock was -- only with a bit more insincerity. More than a dozen Republican lawmakers, while denouncing the stimulus to the media and their constituents, privately sent letters to just one of the federal government's many agencies seeking stimulus money for home-state pork projects," the paper reported.

Regarding Schock's appearance at the green technology education program ribbon-cutting ceremony, the bill providing funds for that program was an omnibus-spending bill that Congress took up last spring. Maddow's point, nevertheless, remained the same.

"If you vote against the omnibus bill," she said at the end of the exchange, "if you complain about the omnibus bill, if you tout your vote against the omnibus bill, it is hypocrisy to then go to your district and go to a ribbon cutting ceremony for something that is funded by the omnibus bill that you voted against."

Watch the exchange at 2:20.

Dear Irma:
I watched the entire Rachel Maddow show last night in complete amazement. She put on a graduate school clinic in public affairs and government. It was AWESOME and highly encouraging to see her call out hypocrisy time and time again AND support it with facts and evidence.

For example: showing how some of the Republicans are arguing with themselves over policies they supported and now oppose. Why? For naked political gain.

I agree with you. Rachel Maddow is the BEST!!!

Right, Clark!

That is exactly my take on her. She is amazing. You know that she has a PH.D in Political PHilosophy from Oxford U? I have been following her since her program on the dear departed Air America Radio.

I heard her speaking about her undergrad days days at Standford U when Condoleeza Rice was provost there. She knew Dr. Rice before she became prominent--and Rachel had some unflattering things to say about the future Sec of State, particularly about her coolness and lack of empathy toward minorities.

Her preparation and basic store of knowledge leaves almost every other poltical commmentator in the dust. She is definitely a treasure!!!

Thanks Rich. When i saw the ad that Maddow was going to be on Meet The Press, I made note of this on my to do list.lol I nnot only give credit for any Republican and some Democrats who will go head to head with her...

And, because we tend to be a country never willing to have truth as a part of our political dialogues, I do worry about her's and Olbermann's programs...

MY MAIN FALUT AND COMPLAINT, CLARK, OF THE DEMOCRATS IS ALL THEY HAVE TO SAY IS, "Is the cost of these 9 years of wars coming out of your personal banking accounts or are our grandchildren going to have to pay for them?!!!!!?"Are you going to help cover the cost of our injured in these war's long term health care that is being dropped by their private insurence going to come out of your presonal earnings from the insurance lobby's monies"??????!!!?

GOING OFF TOPIC...

Richard and Clark, last week after hearing about toyoda made it a practice to hire lobbist/federal watch dogs charged with making sure their cars meet all standard requirements to be able to just stay below the legal accusations of lying to the feds when confronted if their cars were safe- up to standards, the same method used by Maddoff to get away with his ponzy scheme?

What I mean is this the same method used by him only he had his peoples marry those whose job it was to inspect complaints about him for so many, many years? You know how I can go off the deep end in trying to make things into logic.(smile)

Hey Rich, I was so disappointed to hear Rachael say tonight how Senater Evan Byah is one of the most 'conservative' Democrats in Congress. I was sorry, because until then I was able to think at least the Republicans can not say that Rachael is not reporting only on the wrongs of the Republicans since it is my belief that her grabbing onto the neews about Byah's getting all of that lobby monies by his wife just only having to SIT ON THE BOARD OF THAT INSURANCE CO. maybe having something to do with his leaving Congress.(smile)

To tell the truth, I don't care what excuse these long time peoples in Congress are using to leave right before the public starts asking about that insurance lobby monies in their pockets gets started in the coming campaigns, "I" am still going to believe they realize that business as usual with these lobby funds have come to an end. This change may not last for long but it is not going to go away any time soon!!!!

Poor Republicans, now that they have a major back lash coming over their complaints of this administration's not being able to capture any "terrorist' alive but is killing them all; plus saying he could not get any important information if he soes not torture has changed to they should not be talking about having gotten any information from any one at all because our enemy can use this...CAPTURE OF A TOP TALABAN OFFICER THAT BUSH COULD NOT GET????????

I do hope that that country does not get to go back into the hands of the TALABAN for the female's species' sake.

IF THIS WAS NOT SO PITIFUL IT WOULD BE FUNNY. But, all of this CHANGE I can believe in and feel so secure in, makes me happy. I can almost bring myself to have a little compassion for those on the right, because they are after all fellow Americans(smile)

NOw to this **** Cheney torture that was covered tonight...last year before the election they had a hearing on CSpan that was dubbed the non bush impeachment hearings...they were talking about the possible war crimes that could be brought...the full agreement was to not impeach Bush, but if they were to do it then charge him the day he left office...We alll know this did not happen...but one of the constutional judges said this...

The best thing for the american government can do for its citizens is to try Bush and Cheney for war crimes because what he said back them I do believe I heard something like this tonight as they were talking about that internatioanl attorner who has help spain berign charges against some of bush's people for those secret tortures taht they ssent citizens of other countries to be turtored...back to waht that judge said...he said if we did not try bush and Cheney taht any country that wanted to do so could take any American citizen that is in their country and try and sentence them for war crimes...

Thereeee are a lot of contrys with dictators...the same way I know that Iran is a litle to close to China and the last thing taht China is going to let any country do is force peoples out of Iram and into their country...this is why I am always more concerned about what China is going to say about this Iram isue as russhia keeps helping them with their nuclear materials they need...

Have the two of you heard this about oour citizens can be tried for war crimes especially since Cheney just said what he said...THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO LIMITS AS TO WHAT THEY WILL GO OR DO TO GET THAT BLACK MAN OUT OF THAT WHITE HOUSE WILL THEY...THEY HAVE ALREADY THROWN BUSH UNDER THE BUS LAST WEEK AND NOW THIS FROM CHENEY???????????????????????????????????????(I am not smiling)I AM WORRIED....
