The Queen's Chair: New York State Governor David Paterson Drops Out Of Race (154 hits)

Today, New York State Governor David Paterson dropped out of the Governor's Race. A week ago, he announced that he would run and nothing would prevent him from seeking election. His campaign is probably the shortest one in history.

Considering that the legally blind African-American governor got the job by default. Former Governor Elliot Spitzer (aka Client #9) resigned in disgrace when the media discovered his involvement in a prostitution ring. Paterson was his second in command and got the job.

And that's when the real problems started.

New York State is running in the red. We could have the same money problems as California. He's been trying to cut spending and address some real concerns that threaten our state's future. The problem is that lawmakers have been ignoring the issues for years. Governor Paterson wants to clean up our state but he's meeting resistance. He is trying to get lawmakers to do right, but they won't. Sound familiar?

President Obama suggested that he not run because his poll numbers were dropping. The President was trying to ensure that a Democrat would get elected in the next election. Governor Paterson and his wife went on the offensive and broke the news to the media.

He has proposed new taxes and fees. That decision didn't win him any new fans. Then he proposed holding tax refund checks until maybe May or June to draw interest and balance the state's budget. His proposal cause such an uproar that his poll numbers plummeted more and the lawmakers passed a law forbidding him to do that.

Now a Paterson aide (a close personal aid) was involved in a domestic violence case and supposedly Governor Paterson and some state troopers alledgely suggested that she drop the charges. He claims he hasn't abused his powers and he dropped out of the race to focus on the business of New York State without distractions.

Governor Paterson may have had good intentions, but things don't always turn out the way we'd like. When your black and a leader in this country, there is always a price to be paid. In this case, I feel that he was betrayed by a friend and that he made some bad decisions. Too bad, we'll never know what he could have really done.

Good point about the NY Times. There were some very unfair leaks which turned out not to be backed up.

However, the recent issue shows serious lapse of judgement. Bob Herbert is one of the most respected coluimnists around. He doesn't represent the NY Times. When he expresses his concerns about the Governer's ability to serve, it is time to give a listen.

I just posted his column about Gov Paterson to offer some background on the issue.

The bottom line for Democrats is--they do not want to lose the NY state house. Who can blame them?
