Bordering the Indian Ocean, this beautiful African nation is a republic which gained its independence from British rule in 1963. Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined to form the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964. Founded in 1862, Dar es Salaam, the capital, is the busiest African port on the Indian Ocean.
Over 80 percent of the jpeople are engaged in farming. Tanzania is the world's largest producer of sisal, a fiber used in the making of rope, twine, and other similar products. Zanzibar produces cloves...in fact once was the world largest producer. Tanzania produces coffee, cotton, tobacco, cononuts, bananas and corn. Gold and Diamonds are the two most important minerals mined in Tanzania. Diamonds make up about one-third of the country's mineral output. Ngorongoro Crater in noerthern Tanzania is home to the largest concentration of wildlife in Africa, including lions.
Population is about 30 million and major languages are Swahili, English and Arabic. major religions include Christianity, Islam and animalistic. Opportunities for modernization are enormous. Most Tanzanians still live in a rural environment. But, traditional patterns are breaking up with incfreasing nunmbers of rural families moving to the growing urban centers such as the capital, Dar es Salaam. Here, Africans interact with Western industry, entertainment and customs. Only a small percentage of young people attend secondary and trade schools.
Some steps were taken to modernize both Tanzania. Schools have been buildt by the government and missionaries. Roads and railroads were constructed, also. The country is scarsely populated with dense conditions around the capital on the coast. Modernization opportunities exists for agricultural technologies, power distribution, assembly plants and food processing plants. The country has a stable government and eager to be put on the world stage as a thriving and upcoming nation. Black Americans can do much for Tanzania and in return establish a homeland for themselves with a flag and government of our own.
