BLACK IN TIME: A Moment In OUR History (163 hits)

Jim Beckwourth

On April 26, 1844, James Beckwourth Discovered A Path Through The Sierra Nevada Mountains That Now Bears His Name. Beckwourth Pass, On U.S. Alt 40, Between Reno Nevada And Sacramento, California Made Overland Travel To The Gold Fields Of California, Possible.

Ironically, In 1798, Beckwourth Was Born A Slave On The Same Day, April 26th, That He Discovered The Pass. Although There Is Disagreement Among Historians About His Parentage, It's Believed That He Was The Son Of A Slave And A White Revolutionary War Officer.

Jim Beckwourth Escaped From Slavery At Age 19 And Went On To Become One Of The Most Famous And Notable Figures In The Early History On America's Western Frontier. He Also Co-founded Pueblo Colorado.

In 1824, Jim Beckwourth Was Adopted By The Crow Indians And Lived With Them For Several Years. He Fought Side By Side With Them In Battle And Eventually Attained The Rank Of Crow Chief.

Beckworth Was Known For His Toughness. He Was A Trapper, A Trade Frontiersman, A Gold Prospector, An Indian Fighter And Army Scout.

Gaddy, we have not only our biggest public park here named Beckwourth Park, but each year we have a Beckwourth day...

This park runs miles along the Feather River with boating and sking and motor croos racing with young children and base ball games and just sitting along the banks fishing or just reading, ect.(smile)
