The Psychodynamic Perspective of Personality (1311 hits)

Sigmund Freud believed that man's personality consisted of three structures, which he called the id, the ego, and the superego. I thought that I'd put a question out there to see if anyone has a viewpoint, since I've read a few blogs that contained terms used in psychology.
I just took a course in The Science Of Psychology and I was wondering if anyone felt that Freuds theories about the Id, ego, and superego were symbolism of the three in one trinity?

Helen... I believe Freudan Therory of the Unconscious/Conscious/Preconscious mind... Unconsiously people may walk in their sleep... Talk in their sleep... Text book analysis within psychology.... Conscious people do things of habit... Compulsive disorders... hand washing, cleaning, phobias....

The Trinity is more within Theology.... Philosophy .... more generally, the study of religious faith, practice, and experience, or of spirituality.... So I don't think I would say there are comparisons or symbolic reasonging between the two.

It's like Psychology is the thoughts or actions of man....
Theology is the practice, faith, spiritual beliefs in man....
Does this make sense? I'm also taking classes... I find this subject interesting...

Helen:

Fascinating question!!! It makes me really think about it.

Freud was a giant in the history of the development of the field of psychology because he was a pioneer. Nobody before him suggested that something like a subconscious mind existed.

However, as you can imagine, some of his theories have been supplanted by actual emprical research. His writings are now viewed almost as a primitive beginning of the science of psychology.

But, I do believe the three elements he names have validity in truth. We see them operating in our own lives. ID--uncontrolled primal desire. EGO--our image of oursevles. SUPEREGO--restraining and controlling rampant desire by morality and conscience.

But, I do not think it represents the whole picture of our psychological life.

And I think Cynthia had it right--Theology and PHilosophy are very diferent disciplines than Psychology. So I don't think they translate at all.

But...it is interesting to think about it!!!

Good luck with your studies!!!

I got the impression that psychology is somehow connected to the belief system because Cartoonist and movie producers sometimes depict personal conflict showing an individual with an angel speaking into one ear and a devil speaking into the other ear. The angel represents Freud's idea of the _____ and the devil represents Freud's idea of the _____.

Very interesting!!!!

And I think it is more real than a cartoon. I have those same devils and angels whispering in MY ears!!!

Sounds very interesting, I think the mind deals with these two elements of psychology all the time. Going with the angel is usually a good one to follow. This is very insightful and educationing. I learn as I go. Never too old to learn.

Helen... VERY... VERY... Interesting...... I have to use Rich's quote on this...
"SUPEREGO--restraining and controlling rampant desire by morality and conscience"

The little voice in your head.... The Super-ego can be thought of as a type of conscience that punishes misbehavior with feelings of guilt. For example: having extra-marital affairs

That's the beauty of Psychology... One trying to understand the ways one might think...

Again.... Very Interesting!!

And keep in mind there are so many schools of thought and many facets and areas within both Psychology and Sociology. Some of it is theoritetical and some of it is practical.

I think it depends on the professor--they can be fascinating...if the professor knows what he or she is talking about.

A bad teacher can ruin even the most fascinating subject!

Hey Dr. Artis:

It's not junk science--they use well researcehed trends, statistics and probability.

BUT...all they can do is spot tendencies. I don't think they can make definitive predictions. You have to go to the old Gypsy Ladies for that.

The textbook used for Psychology-200 course was written by Laura A. King. I really enjoyed how she tried to cover a wide variety of theories. I myself, think that I might take my next course in the study of Paranormal Psychology. The paranormal should have some answers as to why strange things happen when you don't stay focused.

With our children it is something (psychologically) that gives parents (especially mother's) an intuition. Since conception, the unborn child is feed, protected, by the mother....

Twins.. some how carry the same/similar feelings.. still a psychological process....

Paranormal.... Part Abnormal... Something science cannot explain...

9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in [a] the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. .

Sigmund Freud a wonderful jewish fellow born in The AustroHungarian Empire, his mothers pregnancy developed with Him in a Caul.

In those times paganChristians believed that the Caul birth was a sign that the child might be born a vampire. Also born in Austria was Adolph Hitler who took the pupils of Sigmund Freud and burned them like vampires.

Many scientists consider his work unScientifically tested and I am one to despise vampires and snake oil doctors.

Irma you asked: Cynthia, now I will ask you two things...

1. What is witchcraft? .....................WORKS OF EVIL... IT'S MORE associated with PSYCH
2. Have you ever been to a Christian funeral? Yes... and personally I don't like them..

I grew up listening to those old stories about witches, the devil, roots, voodoo, unsettled spirits, exorcisim.. demonic possession.. As I got older and recognized the good and the evil... I just separated myself from all of those beliefs that some of my family members ... practice, believe, witnessed....
Like Psychology... the brain is so incredible... It's massive, yet delicate and fragile. Neuro Psychology, teaches one that the brain is a dynamic organ... It's away from the rest of the internal organs, alone, but it's the most essential part of the human existance. And Doctor's are baffled with the design and functions of the brain....

Theology teaches ... The mind of a man is only known to GOD... Therefore as a believer in Faith Healing and Gifted Hands... I don't get into the "unknown" I just know in my hearts of heart.... GOD IS A MASTER DESIGNER.... smile

Cynthia:

I think you really put your finger on it. You acknowledge the incredible reach and possibility of the human brain and how doctors are baffled.

So there is a great mystery about how the human mind works. And you are calling this mystery DIVINE.

And you are so right.

Theologians and mystics from various religious traditions, Chrsitian, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish--so many have come to the same conclusion: GOD IS UNKNOWABLE BY HUMAN FACULTIES. HE IS A GLORIOUS MYSTERY.

That is why the best way to praise him is to keep silent in awe and adoration of His Supreme Power!!!

Chynthia, I asked you those two questions, because you do have a seeking mind..what you just said in your comment to Rich seem to me to be more of the true and actual Cynthia's open mind...than when you were using QUOTES about withcraft and not dealing with the dead...(smile)

You can try as I do and it always work for me...

Try to replace "the unknown (fears) with "seek and ye shall find" (smile)

AN HOUR / MINUTUE FROM NOW IS ALSO UNKNOWN, BUT IT DOES NOT STOP ME FROM PLANNING TO FIX DINER FOR A WEEK AHEAD WHEN I GO TO THE MARKET OR BUYING CHRISTMAS CARDS FOR 2011 AS SOON AS THEY WENT ON SALE AFTER CHRISTMAS 2010...LOL..ITS TOO MUCH FUN...plus, I live for that word "sale". lol

I love scary movies, but a lot of the time I so regret I had watched them later. (smile)

Cynthia, the one thing that all of the Buddhist religions have in common that Christianity does not have is YOU THE INDIVIDUAL HAVE CONTROL OF WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY /UNHAPPY...WE ARE ALL UNITED WITH EACH OTHER, NATURE AND THE UNIVERSE AT LARGE AND NEVER STOP TRYING TO LEARN BECAUSE NO ONE HAS ALL OF THE ANSWERS/ have asked all of the questions...

BUT, MOST OF ALL CYNTHIA, WE HAVE A SEEKING MIND, WE HAVE THE POWERS To BE HAPPY/ UNHAPPY WITHIN OUR OWNSELVES... TO DO RIGHT / WRONG...( IN BUDDHISM THIS IS CALLED B-A-L-A-N-C-E) THIS MY FRIEND IS BUDDHISM IN A NUT SHELL..SO SIMPLE IT IS REJECTED, by so many. (S-M-I-L-E)

2. Cynthia has not power and she must always be dependant on someone, someting, some place? ISN'T ( N. D. ) BUDDHISM SOMETHING TO FEAR?!? T. T. doesn't. LOL (SMILE)

Cynthia, Tina Turner and I have the same practice...Tina once she learned that she had her own power she was free although she only had 46 cents of her own...She chose to be happy on her own terms and so far has not met another OB LTICLE SHE ALLOWED TO STAND BETWEEN HER AND HER GOALS to survive and be happy doing it. T. T. and I are from the generation when a woman who had the nerve to respect and to love her ownself was to be selfish...and, things like doing anything like believe we had power would gurantee we went straight to H-E-L-L...some people still do. (smile)

Oh, and if we have children, we can read their minds by their pattern of behaviors as Rich says because a lot of our parents did the same things with us....we can often sense when someone (our own selvesare ) close to us are in danger...and, who can explain identical twins, ect. (smile)

We never should give up or allow our bias to cause us to limit any kinds of knowledge as a civil and moral and legal right in this need to know / to be enlightened. (smile)

Helen, by now I hope you know me as only going to stick with logic as emotions changes with each subject / situation, ect, As the idea, belief of 'enemy' works both ways would not this same be used against you, and you are happy with this because this is GOD's words that that person who see you as their enemy should do the same thing?!?

Now Helen, I will ask you a question...What religion do you practice and is your religion the only correct, right or is those who practice the Muslim faith or no religion at all correct and right?

My answer to this is that we are all GOD"S children and G-O-D could not make a mistake therefore we are all equal, as individuals. (smile)

"I" don't believe that God sent his only son to die on the cross for anyone to do harm or even think about doing anything against any of his children...Yes, I am not a Christian as the label goes, but I will only treat another person as I want to be treated, period..."I" have no kind of excuse to do otherwise and still be the best person "I" can be. Cynthia, now I will ask you two things...

1. What is witchcraft?
2. Have you ever been to a Christian funeral?

"I" ask these two questions because 1. because women were better medical doctors than men were they were called witches.F-A-C-T...2. I have been to many Christian funerals...get my point?

but, I also see religion and the parnormal as two different things...plus the only two things that have ever had me fear, the unknown or anything was the devil and hell...now I fear neither...but, also I now do my own thinkings without fear or permission or worry about any kinds of social blacklash. Actually I entered UCD as a Psychology major and a philosophy minor...I said this to say that in community college I had, had Freud, it seemed like for ever and ever and could not take one more class with his nameas the main study...

I guess I had just grown too sick of Freud...I guess I had become like those who had studied under him therefore / maybe his study was just too lacking to be interesting any longer...

PSYCHOLOGY, means INDIVIDUAL PERSONALITY or MASK...

I prefer the way Jung does the id, ego and super ego, but this is my ' individual personality' which does not fit into the Fruedian THEORY FIELD OF the science of Psychology. But, as Rich said Freud must take the full credit for this field of science.(smile)

but, their EGO I guess got in the way. lol (smile)
