As the din continues to increase over reported decreases in teaching staff for the coming school year, Secretary Arne Duncan has taken advance steps to increase funding to support schools with the finances they need to support more teaching staff. As reported on the US Department of Education website, a recent letter to congressional leaders on behalf of the president from Secretary Duncan has requested a supplemental appropriations bill for $23 billion to preserve education jobs. He also requested an additional $1 billion to preserve early education jobs and $2 billion for public safety.
The headlines are full of notices of teaching layoffs, and the response from the local communities has slowly risen into a roar, as parents and students alike are frustrated over the potential of larger class sizes in already-crowded schools and a further disintegration of the quality of education US students will receive.
Take the initiative to support the White House’s push for funding that could save hundreds or even thousands of teaching jobs across the country and attend your next board of education meeting or write your congressman or representative to support the proposed funding.
If your local school is planning for layoffs, the time is now to take action to save the teaching jobs that will help propel the education reform movement forward. Go to
