FOOD FOR THOUGHT: IN LIEU OF THE TORNADOES, THE OIL SPILL AND OTHER NATURAL DISASTERS HOW PREPARED ARE YOU? (3477 hits)

Peace To All,

In lieu of the devastating tornadoes, the BP oil spill in Louisiana and the hurricane season right around the corner, how prepared are you (we) in the event of such natural disasters happening in your (our) city and state?

1. How many of you can go without your breakfast, lunch or dinner (and snacking in between) for a period of time?

2. How many of you can go without your modern technologies?

3. How many families can stay in the home and get along together for an extended period of time?

4. How many of you have a survival plan that is known amongst your family?

5. How many of you are able to still be mobile without the use of a vehicle (due to gas prices)?

6. How long are you able to survive if you lost your job today?

7. How long can you go without food or water (fast)?

8. How long are we going to go disunited as a people?

9. How long are we as a people will be Sayers of the word then Doers?

10. How many are willing to come together in spite of our differences for the purpose of dialoging on ideas and then moving towards the building of said ideas to produce a much needed survival plan?

Keep in mind my blog is not intended to scare the hell out of anyone, only to get you serious about the topic at hand. For those that are interested in question 10 and are in harmony with using problem solving thinking (by that I mean you don't need to be limited to a mayor/governor/commander-in chief to tell you what to do) your comments are appreciated.

The uniting of us as a people consist further than within the walls of our religious structure. It is wiser to see and prepare in the wait, then to wait and see (being caught in the affects of the wait). The time to do something for ourselves is surely at hand!

Peace!

Hello Black Butterfly and beautiful Queen that you are. Your questions are most encouraging and mind provoking at the same time. Encouraging to those of us who are walking right and talking right according to Universal Law, thought provoking I would say because, there will be a time when we all will be faced with much hardship, harder than it has ever hit humanity. With this thought in mind, what are we to do?
Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not to our own understanding.
As the maker and shaper of all things has prepared those who have been sent to prepare those who are not fully aware or awaken to what must soon come.
Know thyself and know fully the answers to all of the questions above without fret or fear.

Sis. Siebra....As Salaam Alaikum

My suggestions for preparations for persons like yourself and others living in a Gulf State is to begin to stock up on canned goods, bottled water and first aid essentials. Then I would be considering, what state I would want to move to further inward and northern, if I had to. Messenger Muhammad already foretold that Allah would drive people living in America inward from each coast using the forces of nature. It was taught crystal clear 43 years of his life and in Message to the BlackMan in America.

@Siebra I know you mean wel, but like someone wrote above people are not in the habit of planning for the maybes in their life. They are too busy commenting on 'Your Thoughts Re: Why it would bother a Black woman to be seen with a White man'...........as if that has some merit...LOL

Check this out...

If you have ever wanted to produce your own cheaper than dirt survival food...this is going to be the most important message you will ever read.

Here is why:

There now exists a new video course that reveals how to safely prepare and store foods in the event of a dangerous worldwide crisis. It’s designed for anyone who is frustrated with surging grocery prices and the very real possibility of empty shelves during the first year of the new administration.

The success of the new videos has already encouraged hundreds of people who never thought they could preserve their own food to take action and finally start storing their emergency supply.
Massive Food Shortage Creates Worldwide Chaos!

Skyrocketing food prices are hitting pocketbooks worldwide. The world’s poorest countries which have the highest population bases are at risk the most as core food supplies become scarce. Worldwide grain supplies are dropping precipitously. Exporting nations are now themselves running out of grain.
Police prepared for riot control
Will Canadian Troops be guarding U.S. food supplies this winter?

As a result, hunger is spreading worldwide. Already, several African nations have had citizens killed in food riots. There is talk that the government in Bangladesh could be toppled over soaring food prices. Food-related tensions and unrest are breaking out in Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and South America. Armed soldiers now stand watch over rice distribution in more and more countries. Just a few miles to the South, food riots have broken out in Mexico and Haiti. Estimates are that 33 nations are at risk of conflict and social unrest because of food shortages.

That's a lot of suffering. And, Americans who know their history understand all to well, suffering tends to bring out the ugly side in human nature. Right now, Americans just change channels when they see others starving on television. But it seems America could be next. The dollar is quickly losing value and the U.S. is more dependent on foreign food production than ever. Already grocery bills are rising faster than incomes. Wheat, corn, soybeans, bread, apples, beef, chicken, eggs, and milk: prices for these items are shooting up by double-digit percentages. Coupled with energy prices pushing skyward, more and more Americans are feeling the pinch which now includes food shortages. Many experts think we could be approaching the greatest disaster in the country's history. Many Americans are starting to prepare.
How To Prepare For An Unthinkable Crisis!

There is still time for you to prepare, but you have to start learning how to make your own survival foods as soon as humanly possible. The best way to do it is to get the inside scoop on how to do it right. Fortunately, there is a way to get twenty years worth of food storage secrets crammed into two DVD's.

This new food storage system is called Food Storage Secrets. You do not need a lot of expensive equipment to store foods for a crisis using the methods taught here. Even better, Food Storage Secrets pays for itself quickly as you begin to put away garden produce or even meats that you buy on sale. For most folks it's simply the biggest bargain of their lives. You can finally become self-sufficient and any extra money saved in food expense goes right back to your pocket. Frankly, at the end of the day, Food Storage Secrets actually makes you money!

What's more, the videos take you by the hand, step by step, through the entire process of "putting away" almost any food you can think of. It's very much like having a food storage professional right there with you every step of the way.
Makes Creating Survival Foods Easy!

It's extremely easy to start storing food using this method and you can immediately understand why actual users of the "Food Storage Secrets" system are saying things like this:

Traci W.

"I bought a book at Barnes and Noble on canning. It had a lot of pictures but I have to admit it wasn't until I watched one of your videos that it all seemed to come together. We're even using your system to can wild game. Nothing gets wasted anymore. We're canning everything in sight! You're on my Christmas list for life!"

Jennifer A. Stanhope, NJ
“Growing up in a house where my mother canned food every year I thought I knew everything there was to know. I was astounded by the things I didn’t know about and learned. I’m really happy with the videos.”

Doctor
Many experts believe the global food shortage will become the greatest crisis in American history.

Can These Videos Keep You Alive In A Crisis?

It depends. They won't help you if you just buy them and put them on a shelf somewhere. It's best if you really want to get off the grid, prepare for a crisis and learn to be self-sufficient.

Food shortages are now likely in the U.S. in the near future. One single strategic terrorist bombing can literally empty grocery store shelves for months at a time. Will you be ready when the unthinkable happens? Sadly, most Americans will not be. Most will demand that the government "do something." But the truth is...
The Government Won't Help You In This Crisis!

Face it, when a crisis arises, you and your family will be on your own. And if you want to be able to help others, you will need to have a basement full of stored foods. Just imagine the peace of mind you'll enjoy knowing your family will have enough to eat no matter what happens! Lastly, you will finally say good-bye to being a super market slave. Every time you go to your basement or pantry and grab a jar of your private food supply, you are truly self-sufficient and finally off the establishment food grid.
Easy To Watch And Easy To Learn!

You will never again worry about starving because of a terrorist attack, food shortage or even inflationary food prices. In fact, the goal of these videos is to teach families like yours the easiest, quickest and absolutely best self-sufficiency… food storage… canning secrets available. No special skills required. No need to spend a lot of money to get started. Call it very cheap starvation insurance.
Crash Course On Getting Off The Food Grid!

Here are some of the things you'll learn:

* How to make your canned foods taste five times better than grocery store food.
* What you absolutely must learn about vegetable acidity.
* Advice many “old time” canners give that is dead wrong.
* Where to buy your produce for canning.
* How to produce potent “canned medicines”.
* 3 mistakes to avoid when boiling and cooking produce.
* How to be up and running overnight.
* How to store your canning equipment.
* How to “short cut” your learning by half.
* Why a teaspoon of vinegar changes how your vegetables look, feel and even taste.
* How to use a single teaspoon of vinegar to make sure your food looks fresher than store bought.
* How to process and prepare almost any type of food.
* How to create your own basement or pantry supermarket.
* Some crucial (and unusual) things you must do to protect against food poisoning.
(It's easy to do once you know the secret).

Absolutely everything you need to know is on these food storage teaching DVDs. Someone once said that these videos are the ultimate "all you need to know" private lessons on preparedness. And if there ever was a time to learn all you can on preparing for hard times, it's now. Here's more of what you will learn about food storage:

* Best ways to keep food fresh for a year at a time.
* Secrets to keeping your kitchen safe.
* When to say “no” to canning fruits and vegetables.
* Utensil shortcuts that can save a fortune.
* How to produce the absolute best tasting survival food.
* 4 important steps to insure your food is ready to be processed.
* The absolute best method to can tomatoes.
* One deadly mistake beginning canners make and how to avoid it.
* Canning times and pressure tables for 39 different meats.
* Canning times and pressure tables for 21 different fruits.
* Altitude charts you can’t can without.
* The only safe way to can meats.
* How to get more vitamins, minerals and trace elements into your canned food.

Best of all, you'll learn how to turn each jar of prepared food into canned "Super Food" by adding a very powerful ingredient that can change the way you think about storing food forever. You'll now produce your own “foods that heal” any time you want, any where you want. It's easy once you know the secrets.

Without Knowledge of Self and the ability to lead yourself, you lack the proper Intellectual Disaster Preparedness to weather a storm, the recent tornadoes in the Midwest should have taught us something about "building a home for yourself." Hell, even animals have enough sense to “seek higher ground” when they see the clouds rolling in. What do they know that the human beings do not know?

Be prepared for emergency

By Christine Dugas, USA TODAY
A year ago, when a blackout cut off power for more than 50 million people from Michigan and Ohio to the Northeast, Katherine Kotopoulos was the only person in her Manhattan office with a flashlight. She also had a pair of sneakers, which came in handy walking home.

An American Red Cross persopnal preparedness kit and contents.

Kotopoulos, an administrator at Weill Medical College, has a larger emergency supply at home that includes a water purification kit, glow sticks and a first-aid kit.

"I feel like I've always been the type of person who thinks about emergencies," she says. "When I was a little girl, I kept a bag with doll clothes in it in case of fire."

Kotopoulos, 30, is hardly typical. A recent American Red Cross survey found only two in 10 feel very prepared for a catastrophe.

The Department of Homeland Security, the Red Cross and other organizations are trying to reverse that trend. But they face obstacles. Many Americans say they don't live in an area at high risk for terrorism. Others believe that the threats are overblown, or they are simply fatalistic. "I figure if something happens where I need an emergency kit for a terrorist attack, we are all in more trouble than can be fixed with an emergency kit," says Mark Bracher, an insurance actuary in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Why have a kit

Living far from hot spots like New York City or Washington, D.C., doesn't mean you should be complacent. Experts say everyone could benefit from an emergency plan, a first-aid kit and emergency supplies.

"Many people think you'll either be evaporated by a nuclear blast or not affected at all," says Courtney Nichols, vice president of the America Prepared Campaign. "There are many ways you can be affected tangentially by terrorism."

Even if you think it's unlikely that a terrorist attack will affect you personally, an emergency kit can come in handy in other ways. Natural disasters, blackouts or chemical spills can strike anyone. "The Red Cross responds to 70,000 disasters a year," says the agency's president, Marty Evans. "No one is immune."

But there is confusion about how to prepare for an emergency. And cost is a concern for many families.

What to put in a kit

Consumers should start by going to a reputable Web site for information. Homeland Security, Red Cross and New York City's Office of Emergency Management offer detailed advice on emergency preparedness.

The Web sites vary somewhat in what they recommend. But an important item is a battery-operated radio so you can get emergency information, Evans says.

After the Sept. 11 attacks and last year's blackout, new products have been introduced. For instance, Eton has Blackout Buddy, a combination clock radio and light that recharges in an outlet. It sells for about $29.99 at RadioShack and other retailers. For slightly more money, you can get a hand-crank radio from Coleman or Grundig.

Energizer has the Quick Switch flashlight that runs on different sizes of batteries — two D, two C or two AA — so you can use whichever's on hand. It will be available at retailers in mid-September for $10 to $13.

Much of what you should keep on hand is obvious: a first-aid kit, comfortable clothing, water and non-perishable food, for example.

Remember the needs of infants, the elderly and pets. Melissa Joseph, a hair stylist from Dingmans Ferry, Pa., has stored canned goods, a flashlight and batteries and other items in her pantry. Pregnant with her first child, Joseph is planning to add baby items.

What does it cost

If you decide to put together a kit from scratch, costs can quickly mount. But a number of companies and organizations sell prepackaged emergency kits. Among them:

• The Red Cross has an emergency preparedness kit that comes in a backpack. It contains the basic necessities for an adult for three days. It will sell for about $50 through individual Red Cross chapters and on the organization's Web site starting next month.

The organization also sells a safety tube for about $5. It includes a water pouch, dust mask, whistle and six-hour light stick.

• Home Guard will begin selling a prepackaged Ready Kit and Ready Kit Plus through major retailers as early as next week. The kits come in backpacks and will sell for about $30 and $50.

They are similar to the Red Cross kit, except they also include a biohazard bag and stronger protective plastic sheeting.

• Other specialty Web sites, such as iPrepare.com, raytechcatalog.com and SaferAmerica.com, sell kits and individual items.

Though national retail chains sell many items you need for a kit, prepackaged kits can save you time and money, Nichols says.

You'll need to customize a kit to fit your own needs and circumstances. For instance, if you live near a nuclear reactor, you might be more concerned about keeping potassium iodide on hand to help protect against radiation-induced thyroid cancer.

If money is no object and peace of mind is a high priority, you may want to purchase specialty items, such as a gas mask or escape hood. At SaferAmerica.com, the Millennium gas mask, which can protect against nuclear, chemical and biological attack, sells for $249. An Evac-U8 Escape Hood, which protects against smoke and carbon monoxide, is $66.50. A high-rise parachute escape system costs $1,145.

But before you spend a bundle on such products, shop around for the best price and learn the pros and cons. For instance, even though an escape hood is designed for one-time use, many people prefer it to a gas mask, which can be reused, says Lionel Uzzan, CEO of Safer America. Hoods can be easier to use, while gas masks come in different sizes and must be tightly fitted to the face. After putting on a gas mask, you must insert the filter, a two-step process that can take longer at a time when every second counts.

When to update

It's easy to forget about your emergency plan once it's in place. But you should periodically replace items that expire.

Unopened battery packs can last for seven to 10 years. Special "code red" batteries, available in D size only, have a 20-year shelf life if unused.

Food, water and medications also will have to be updated. Check the expiration dates. Food supplies in some emergency kits have a five-year shelf life. The shelf life of potassium iodide is five years.

Emily Jernigan, a writer from Oak Ridge, Tenn., started to assemble emergency supplies in her basement last year. She bought some duct tape, batteries and cans of beef stew. "The last time I looked, the duct tape had stuck together from the dampness, the batteries are probably acquiring that rime of corrosion, and I've fed the beef stew to the dogs," she says.

Though she wonders if she would want to survive some horrific attack, she says she probably will replace the batteries and buy new duct tape.

The cost of preparedness

The Department of Homeland Security offers information on what to set aside in case of emergency on a Web site, www.ready.gov.

This blog is very important for us all to start considering what and how we should react in case the worst senario occurs. We as a people shouldn't be caught with our pants hanging down nor should we want to depend on Red Cross or the other agencies alone because of the type of panic that such an attack would have on our communities in general.

Thank you for the article it is very timely indeed beloved!

Siebra: Thank you for the reminder--because we really do forget--that ACts of God and the forces of nature are beyond anyone's influcence or control and can occur at any time.

The only mass tragic event I can even remotely compare the devastation of Katrina to was 9/11 here in NY. Even though more peole died on 9/11, the devastation and ruin touched millions more lives on the gulf coast and the people's misery remained for a longer period of time.

In both cases it was a horrifying reminder of how poweless we really are.

And your powerful question--how long can we remain disunited--really resonates with me.

WE ARE OUR BROTHER'S KEEPER. I hope and pray that we can remember that trusim even in good times.

This year would be a GREAT time to start practicing growing your own food. Times will continue getting harder and produce will continue becoming more contaminated as time progresses. NOW is the idea time to start seedlings in most locations. Do your best to avoid hybrids. Start with simple crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and watermelon. If you live in an apartment try "topsy turvies" which can hang from a balcony. If you live in a house but don't have a yard try raised beds. You can grow a garden on cement!

Fam, please don't be one of the ones caught hungry in the years to come because you didn't familiarize yourself with gardening when it was still an OPTION. One day it might be a NECESSITY. A word to the wise is sufficient. Youtube and google have great references.

Seedsavers is an excellent site for seeds, but at this rate even going to Home Depot is okay. Just get the seeds in some dirt asap!

Because this I read in my local paper today related to BP, and it being as my state just called them,"A repeat offender" and have just filed a law suit againt them, I put this info here.

Ten millions of gallons of gasoline that did not meet Ca. clean fuel specifications were sold across the state by petrolemun giant B.P.state regulators said in a lawsuit filed Wed. The company submitted documents over a four month period to regulators that said galoline refined in Washington shipped to Contra Costa county contained permissible levels of toxic and cancer-causing compounds including benzene, when in fact the fuel failed to meet state standards, the lawsuit said. This could have been in error, but BP has been fined 30 times for clean-fuel violations over the last 10 years. My state now see this as a pattern of behavior from a refinery explotion to the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in 2010.85million gallons is enough to fuel 170,000 cars for a year.Damage expected was not specified in the law suit. Right now "I" don't think we have any more 'seasonal' weather'...much like sports use to be baseball, then foot ball then basketball that now come all togather so now do our weather patterns...

but, if we continue to follow the lead of the powers taht be, we will remain in denial of there being any change at all. (nup)
