In the wake of our teaching crisis due to the sweeping education budget cuts across the US, teachers led by Coordinator Chris Janotta sosmtm2010@gmail.com along with Co-Coordinator Laurie Murphy murph9677@embarqmail.com and their supporters and coworkers to band together the ranks of teachers in the nation to fight the downhill slide the impending teaching layoffs and education budget cuts are causing under the umbrella organization called Save Our Schools Million Teacher March.
From the website, “The mission of the SOS Million Teacher March is to unite teachers, students and concerned citizens across the nation to create respect and support for teachers in order to do what is best for students. Our key issues fall under one giant umbrella: LACK OF RESPECT FOR TEACHERS This one problem has created many other related issues and programs that are not good for education. We would like to speak up for all of America to say that our education system is heading in the wrong direction and needs to be fixed immediately before it creates an even larger national crisis. Our goal is to work with America's leaders to make them understand teachers don't need punitive programs to "force" them to educate their students; teachers educate their students not only because it is their job, but because it is their passion.
We are also calling for adequate funding for ALL public schools. Budget cuts SHOULD NOT affect the quality of ANY student's education.”
The organization has a dedicated agenda from now until Spring 2011promoting events, the release of a documentary and promotional pushes to build the SOSMTM into a national organization that keeps the public in all 50 states informed about education news.
SOS MTM has engaged social media to spread their message and gain memberships with a Facebook FAN page, which currently has 1116 people who support the cause. If you are a student, parent or teacher and want to get involved, check out the SOS Million Teacher March Facebook FAN page.
