Do police departments view the fractured and internal hatred of ourselves as license to do anything; to just assault, shoot and kill our young men? I knew Oscar Grant's killing would be important and so are so many others that I wrote about in the book. BLACK MEN STOP! excerpt: THE OUTSIDE "I woke up New Years Eve 2008, clicked on the news only to hear another report of a Houston area policeman's shooting of a young black man. 23 year old Robbie Tolan, son of ex Cincinnati Reds player, Bobby Tolan On the same night, New Orleans police shot 22 year old Adolph Grimes 14 times, 12 times in the back. Nine undercover plainclothes narc police officers approached him in his car parked a half block from his grandmothers front door, It was just a few hours later, on New Year's Day, in Oakland, California, that three Bay Area Rapid Transit Police held an unarmed 22 year old black male suspect, Oscar Grant, face down on the ground while one of them shot, and killed him. We all saw that video and its great evidence for most reasonable people, but I have no confidence in any internal investigation. I am certain the police will claim that Grant had a third arm coming out of his back trying to shoot at them....or something just as utterly ridiculous. Everyone all over the world remembers one of the first video demonstrations of this kind of police work. It was of the Rodney King beating by Los Angeles Police on March 3, 1991. The video was graphic and captured the obvious beating of King by Los Angeles Policemen. It was video taped by a private citizen. That video display, however, did not provide enough evidence against these guys. We all know the result. These policemen were exonerated. There were riots which erupted in Los Angeles the day that the four white police officers, who beat King, were found not guilty. Again violent protest as a result of the obvious appearance of unfairness. Police have continued their assault and videos demonstrate it. The list is long, and the pain and suffering of families immense. But, just being black and in a public place puts us at risk for getting harassed, injured or killed by police. You do not have to be a criminal, have a criminal record, sell or use drugs, be a member of a gang, or carry a gun. Most of us do not commit crimes. Just being black, especially young and a male, makes you a target. I was writing at my desk, about 3:00 in the morning, when I got a frantic call from my 20 year old son, who at the time was a third year student at Morehouse College in Atlanta, the Alma mater of greats like, civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, social activist, Julian Bond, actor, Samuel L. Jackson, film director and producer, Spike Lee and attorney, Jeh Charles Johnson, named by President Obama to be General Counsel for the United States Defense Department. In a phone call that a parent always fears getting, especially parents of black children, he frantically told me, “Mama, I didn't do anything, but the police put me in the back of their police car while they searched my truck!” I was drunk from the fear. It was turning into anger. I hurried and got into my vehicle and drove as fast as I could to the scene. On the way, as my tears fell, I tried to tell myself to remain rational and calm. Even though it was less than 3 miles away, every block was excruciating...." We have got to be able to trust each other, because we are still under assault by the pressure of racism in our country. This evil continues to bear down on us, daily. While most Americans would like to believe, or pretend, it is a paragraph in the history books, it is still a painful reality in this 21st century, despite this country's decision to elect a black man for president, and the media's use of “post racial era” to describe this historic event. We've got work to do to organize our families and our communities. It may be 2010, but we have become weakened, much of the time, by our own doing. From Dr. King to President Obama we have continued to chip away at the social and moral relevance gained by the giants of the past, killing our lives with guns and violence, the prison cells; emotionally by hurting the hearts of the children left to fend for themselves; the large numbers of our children dodging violence daily, in failing schools, left with unprepared mothers without the discipline and protection of their fathers. All of this weakens us!! We will continue to be marginalized and ignored by other citizens, the government, the criminal justice system and by police on the ground, because they just think we don't care about us! They board up their walls so they don't have to see or hear those temporary efforts of a struggle; wait until we take that fury back to our own corners and use it against each other. You are either the source of the damage or the solution for recovery. @Irma. Thanks I appreciate your view. And it is welcomed! Discussion is where ideas are born; changes are forged :--) But what's right will never change. Truth connects the generations from the beginning. It may not be fashionable or the "newest thang" to get the basics right, but it's urgent for us--the tiny number (12% population) of slave descendants in America.

@Irma@ClarkTo summarize my points: Getting killed by police for little or no reason is unacceptable!!! But we should not accept the continued killing "by us of us", either. 9 out of 10 young black men are murdered by other black men. It hurts, too. And there are other ways we kill our lives (drug business, HIVAids, hearts of children) We are so fragile--because of our hurting ourselves--that we have lost any respect gained through the Civil Rights Era by our ancestors. We are marginalized, our protest--and I can name a few--have largely gain very little, except a way to vent our frustrations and anger and provided a glimpse to people like Beck and others to use as lies for their political stand. We need to strengthen ourselves--stop the hurting of ourselves. We all saw it. Oscar Grant was killed for no reason and an "involuntary manslaughter" verdict is a joke. Couple of years, in a private cell, that cop will be back with his family. But when we are not taking care of our own personal matters, we are fractured and too weak for anyone in power to give us a thought.

Wonderful blog G...How are we to instruct and teach if not even the law can be trusted to help us? We have to become stronger for we are faced with hurt within our communities far too often. Isn't this all so familar to us and to our youth? It is all so senseless. Thank you for voicing this to all.

@Irma, I had interest in Oscar Grants case, from the beginning. I shared some of that in the excerpt from my book, that I provided in this blog above. Did you read it? I followed this case, as I have many others. A background as a news journalist, this is just my nature. I have done a lot of writing on this The riot was just the result of the frustration with many of us of not getting justice and how futile and weak we are when it comes to our reactions to pain from anyone else outside of us. AND about Oscar's parents, I did post another blog on that reaction. It was heartbreaking!!! Go to http://facebook.com/blackmenstop to see. I do a whole lot of work there, too. I hope your "brick wall" comment was not addressing me. But if it was, I'm sorry you feel that way or that there is any reason that I have provided for you to feel this way. My interest in what our community faces did not just start with this blog or any recent one. It has been a life long love and caring. And to pen a non fiction book about it took a lot of research, writing, time, effort, and frankly guts. I really ran a few years because I did not want to take on this. Time is up for violins of soft encouragement. For more than 40 years we have heard those, playing softly in the background. Even the loud beats and raps of greats like, Tupac and Jay Z, about our problems have not been heard. This book is a God purposed "mega phone" meant to have us face the walking back that we will have to do to clean up the mess...or else we perish. That, my good friend, is what the enemies are waiting for us to do.

I thank everyone who took the time to read and discuss this very difficult, frustrating and painful subject. As long as we search for the truth we will find it. Let's not give up on our communities, families or ourselves. Let us continue:). Love and Peace!!

Steve Judging from your original picture of a young White man, how is it that you have a 25 year old son. Have you found the fountain of youth? Mrs G. I know how upsetting it can be to worry about your child being man handled by the police. I bet you had to throw on you blue beads before you went to the station.

Sista G... Excellent... Enlightenment!!! I recall back in the 80's when "we" were forced to focus on Black On Black crimes... This gave me a heightend interest in the diabolical/psychological mind of the most tormented you men studied in criminal analysist.... Wayne Williams, Willie Bostic and The Dysfunction of violence within his family.. tracing 4 generations of Criminals... You make valid points... socially, mentally, instutionally our black males have been plagued and stigmatized by continual abuse... especially within the judicial system. I'm raising our future men... I stress the Importance of Black Power, Racial Identity and Self Respect.... But when you see for example the outcry of Rodney King and then the embarrasment of some of his later actions... HOW do we as a whole analize this? Was it because of his abuse, and the systems retaliation because of the countries out cry?? What about the Statesboro Boys?? Jena Incident.... Help me here... Oscar Grant and this hipocrisy regarding the disrespect to law and civil disobedience really rattled my chain....

Helen, what a nice compliment. My oldest will be 32 in a few months, I started young. To all, this is not racial. It does have something to do with the color of one's skin, but it is bigger than that. This same son is often targeted by the police himself. Can you say Police State?

@Helen Yes! I was livid! The whole experience changed forever how I see police. @Cynthia What fascinating work! Yes I had to do research for the book and have, while a TV news journalist, interviewed one of the most notorius serial murderers ever...Henry Lee Lucas. I discovered that hurting people hurt people. Overwhelmingly, that hurt begins with what parents did or did not do to demonstrate love----not poverty or denial of the keyes to the car at age 16. This is so crucial and yet we miss this in our culture. I believe we have come to believe it is too simple. In our culture far too many of our children have father abandonment issues (70%, compared to 27% whites; 38% Hospanics), are left with homes unsupervised adequately, some mothers have to work odd hours 2 jobs etc., no one stressing or helping with school work or activities. It makes for a community full with plenty of invitation for mischief which develops into a life of destruction as adults.....and then the cycle is repeated. Black men AND the women they are involved with need to consider the consequences to children before they have s*x. After a baby is created...game over! The child's emotional and physical wellbeing must come first. Parents have to cooperate to make that happen. I believe there should be a penalty when they don't. I'm sorry I'm so longwinded:). If you get a chance go to my main website and view the Prologue. It sets the basis for my thesis. In elementary education now, I see the pain in our kids (OUR KIDS) daily. Let me know your thoughts. http://blackmenstop.ning.com. Love&Peace

Irma there have been so many forms of destruction within areas of Florida by Both Races... Gainesville Florida, Jacksonville Florida, Rosewood Florida, Tallahassee, Florida... And we also have Eatonville Florida which was one of the first all-black towns to be formed after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and was incorporated on August 15, 1887. Zora Neale Hurston grew up there. I would never come close to saying that we are a people of violence or socially destructive!!! No My Lady I am with you on that............. But would you agree that WE ARE THE ONLY RACE OF PEOPLE whose experienced oppression for over hundreds of years??? Longer than any other ethnic group (Jews, Chinese...Native Indians.)? The Tulsa Race Riot of the 1920's.... NOTHING has exceeded that magnitude.... 16 continuous hours of hell!! I guess my quest... is the ANSWER... THE SOLUTION... How many of our youth have to go through this degradation, fear, humiliation before we "whom are so much smarter" have the solution!!

Sista G.... didn't he kill his mother.... and also was a cannabalist??? NOW see.... I gotta read up on him... and yes... I will check out your web site and expect a comment.... luv this stuff... "A Beautiful Mind" the remarkable thing we have been studying it for as long as man has existed.... yet still don't know why we think and do the things we do..... That's the psychological effects/the dysfunction some of us face growing up within our homes... And the sadness is "one never knows the seeds that are planated in a child's mind" ... I am a single parent... and trust me... I try very hard to bring my sons up in a positive... spiritually... prideful environment... Because I remember growing up and seeing things with eyes of a child... and that I AM the one in control of stopping the cycle!! Im long winded as well and topics like this I can talk on.... forever.... Thanks so much.... NOW i can go back and face Prophet Harry!

@Cynthia. Yes Henry killed his mother after watching her carry on a "brothel" type household. His father had already abandoned the home. He grew up hating women, disrespecting men. After serving 10 years for killing his mother, he traveled across the south "over killing" many women. He died of natural causes a few years ago in a Tex prison. I mention his story in the book. I also talk candidly about my pain and loneliness of single parenting in my book. Hang in there. I know the struggle:).

Cynthia, the police are a law to themselves. The sooner we quit speaking as Jamal does, the blue-eyed devil, the sooner we quit attacking each other, and instead recognize and confront the true enemies of justice (many can be named), the sooner we will have our solution.

THANK YOU SISTA G!!!!! I look forward to more of your posts.... Hey at Borders.... I can use my University ID... great!! Irma I know your story.... and that's just a story.... YOU control your destiny.... My Lady... Buddah Chantist!! I pray to GOD I never have to see any young man woman die senslessly.... It tears my heart apart watching a parent... anyone but a parent lose a child... You know my story.... The truth is I have so much love for my race of people.... and also I understand just like Sophia said in the Color Purple.... No one has the right to abuse... beat.. destroy life, self worth, pride or dignity from anyone.... And also I have seem what oppression does to a race of people.... Holocust victims, Vietnam victims, Koreans.... Indians, Africans, Blacks.... there's no racial/ethnic exclusions.... Resliance.... Strenght... Endurance... Pride... Self Respect is what we owe to ourselves.... ONCE we possess this... then we get it ... when we don't... we demand it..... I will never lose my pride... BUT I do become over stressed... overwhelemed depressed... when it seems like we keep going around in circles....

Jacquez and Deshonne are my LIFE... my world and everything that I do is as a POSTIVE Light and EXAMPLE to them.... Im not perfect.... BUT i sure try to be as close as I possibly can.... and one thing I always seek is workable solutions.... and if we all BIA family incorporate workable solutions for the youths we encounter... that's Change we can believe in..... Steve.... the police are not a law to themselves.... that's part of the problem "FEAR"... Once my son was pulled while driving my car.... He had just picked up his brother from school..... This officer circled the school parking lot... waited until my son... pulled out of the school parking lot and called in for back up.... Three officers pulled my son over for "a report that a Mazda had been stolen"... I work with a trucking company and I have to deal with Federal Regulations..... Steve let me tell you this.... by the time I got off the phone.... the Chief of Police with his make shift story.... Fear holds us back.... My fear is not of man.... and Im insulted... why on earth would you compare me to Jamal??????

Hello to All, My question to all of you is simply this. What it is our permanent solution? Clark said advice to his grand son is to be very cooperative and some of us have done that and were still killed. The rest of you offered whining and complaining. So again, what would be our permanent solution? Think of my question in terms of the children of Israel. Many Hebrew fathers and grandfathers advise their children to be very cooperative with the Egyptian soldiers, yet the Egyptian soldiers slice them up with their swords, am I right. Then, there were the communities that whined and complained. Am I right again? However, a permanent solution came to the children of Israel when they earnestly desired for a change. Tell me what you think.

No Cynthia, I wasn't comparing you to Jamal, not at all. It was only to say that his separatist ideas are part of the problem. Now I am not saying this to insult Jamal either. I addressed myself to you because you have the faith to say that word "solution". I'm extremely angry about this verdict, and the solution needs to look at how this verdict got handed down as well as the killing itself. And my belief is that race is a red herring, that the real issues have more to do with this country's failure to address economic and educational issues adequately, and then to cover it up in politics. Our politicians create the problems and then try to convince us that they have solved them, or are working hard to solve them. But do we see them providing a political solution to all these police shootings (and less serious harassments too), or just more of the "serve and protect" crap? Oh, we have this: "Dept. Of Justice Opens Investigation Of Oscar Grant Shooting". Problem solved. Cynthia, I apologize my remarks were so cryptic as to cause such a misunderstanding between us. It was anger for poor Oscar Grant and his family (and much to do with my son who is constantly harassed by the Oakland PD also) and fatigue. My son was once stabbed in the back when he went to the aid of a kid who was being attacked by a gang. And the police did NOTHING. The flip side of the coin. I will talk to you today I hope. I had long since gone to bed by the time you called, but I was happy to get your message this morning.

Thanks so much for this post g. But in 2010, we have become so content in our job for EQUAL JUSTICE HAS BEEN DONE UNTIL OUR BIA IS BEING TAUGHT ON CNN AND NOW ON FOX BY GLEEN BECK and Beck will soon be in D.C. at the Lincoln memorial to farther teach how we must get rid of our president because he is doing just the opposit of what Dr. M.L. King meant in his famous I HAVE A DREAM SPEECH... The more Beck teaches each week our (according to him) our true BIA and continue to have his ratings go up just like CNN did while we just sit and compalin or even join in with this...the more your efforts are going to be turned against you g. ... A question sill unanswered, but there is news about a riot in Oakland that never even happened...and who is spreadint this???? hERE IS WHAT i FIND SO INTERESTING ABOUT THIS SON OF a mother's...no both of these men the police and the male he killed by shooting in the back as someone's sons...THE POLICE TRAINING IN THIS STATE COMES WITH TRAININGS TO NOT PUT THE TAZER AND YOUR GUN IN THE SAME PLACE...BUT THEN THE POLICE DID HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE SEEN IN COURT DOING WHAT THEY DID TO RODNEY KING AND STILL GET FOUND WITH NO LEGAL VIOLATIONS...DID IT NOT HAPPEN...?!?...
