"Dr." Laura Schlessinger, on her radio show, takes a call from a woman seeking her help. The woman identifies herself as black and that she is married to a white man. The woman is seeking Schlessinger's help because she says she is tired of her husbands friends coming around making racist comments or otherwise going out of their way to call attention to her blackness, while he does nothing about it. It's all down hill from there, as Schlessinger seems to take the issue personal, bringing Obama into it (WTF?) instead of doing what her show is purportedly about, helping people with personal problems. This was less about the use of the N-Word and more about Schlessinger's apparent pent up racist sensitivities regarding this "new era" with a black man in the white house. Her gratuitous use of the n-word wasn't the worst of it; she went on to say other things. Someone made this comment, which says it al far better than I can: "Being racist is sorta like being insane--if you are, everyone can see it but you. There was no false claim--Schlessinger threw a whole lot of crazy out there in that statement, and the fact that she--and the whole media establishment--think her use of the N-word was the point just shows how unaware most people are of what real racism looks like."

You know... I had to do a paper last month on the Privilage .... this is just a brief overview.... Privileges are entitlements given to white people at the expense of others, regardless of race or color. After the Europeans began settling into the Americas millions of Native Americans died from the epidemics of small pox. Additionally, the differences in cultures between the Native Indians and Europeans caused long lasting cultural conflicts. As Paul Kivel said, “whites do not constitute a majority, they represent a dominant group.” (Kivel, 1996) White Americans are so in denial with the concept of the white skin privilege, simply because they believe it’s their birthright. Wherein, African Americans had to evolve from intimidating and radical treatment as slaves. Also, people of color were branded with extremely disparaging and offensive names such as nigra, *****, colored, black which pushed people of color to seek a legitimized racial identification. African Americans have endured much hardship. In the past education, decent housing, equal pay, and credit were easily available for the privileged. Kivel points out that “most of the land was stolen from the Indians.” (Kivel, 1996) Slave labor built this country, from the White House to railroads. Yet the whites received more and more of the economic benefits. Even today, people of color continuously deal with stereotypes, racial labels, intimidation, violence, disenfranchisement, harassment, brutality, and injustices under the law. Kivel’s straight forward analysis of past and present conditions convinces him to say yes whites attain more benefits based solely on skin color. In contrast, Mr. Wise opposes the opinions of Mr. Kivel. Since the establishment of colonies in the New World, race has always been divided. House slaves usually had better living quarters than field slaves. In most cases, house slaves were also given better food and hand-me-down clothing from their owner’s family. Light-skinned and multiracial slaves were placed on top of the slave hierarchy. Mr. Wise makes conflicting statements, yet is strongly convinced that there is no such thing as white privileges. However whites feel people of color will use the “race card” as a ploy “to distract the rest of us, or gain sympathy.” (Wise, 2006) All of this to say... It's a superiority feeling.... WE have to realize it is what it is... It's the mind set of White American's.. they are just blinded to the idea and in denial that it exists. What surprises me... The Black female caller... really put herself out there... more hurt and disappointment.... Race, is always going to be a factor in civilazation..

It sounds like another double standard... coming from us... and I don't know who this Dr. Laura is or whether she's a racist, but perhaps what she said sounded racist to some...to me it didn't. I don't know why she went on the Pres. Obama topic, but who knows perhaps she doesn't like President Obama. I do know that the Late Richard Pryor used the N- word all the time! Jade does need a sense of humor and should answer her neighbor's question or tell him that she would appreciate it if he'd ask her opinion rather than stereotyping. It's that simple.
