Marakay Rogers is now on the November 2010 ballot as the Libertarian candidate for governor of Pennsylvania. She faces establishment candidates (D) Dan Onorato and (R) Tom Corbett, as well as another 3rd party candidate, John Krupa, formerly of the Constituion party, who is on the ballot as the Tea Party candidate. Rogers, like other 3rd party candidates, was required by law to submit at least 19,082 signatures when petitioning to gain ballot access; unlike Onorato and Corbett who were only required to get 2,000 signatures on their petitions to gain ballot access in the primaries. After having met the required amount of signatures for ballot access, she still has an uphill battle in this election. During the 2006 election, no 3rd party candidates appeared on the ballot. Although Rogers tried to gain ballot access as the Green Party candidate for governor in 2006, powerful democrats challenged her nomination petition in court, fearing she would siphon away votes for Democrat Ed Rendell. Without the funds to defend the petition, she dropped out of the 2006 race for governor. Now in 2010, Rogers appears to be the only gubernatorial candidate that is speaking out in favor of both personal and economic freedom. Although Rogers is a former member of the Green Party, my interview with her revealed that she seems to be dedicated to the principles of the Libertarian Party. Many libertarian-leaning Republicans attempted to nominate non-establishment candidate for governor, Sam Rohrer, but fell short in the primaries. Rohrer ended up losing to Corbett by over 300,000 votes in the closed primary. Many pro-liberty voters were disappointed and feared that, like 2006, there would be no choice on the ballot, that there wouldn't be a non-establishment, pro-liberty candidate for governor this November. However, this year Pennsylvanians will go to the polls with the chance to elect a non-establishment, pro-liberty, 3rd party candidate, who promises to enact real change.
Below is an interview I did with Marakay Rogers through e-mail correspondence.
