The Queen's Chair: I Survived The First Day of School (402 hits)

I couldn't stop smiling and my daughters knew it. My girls were excited to return back to school and so was I. They tried going to sleep earlier, but they got little sleep. And so did I. I heard them wondering who was going to be in their class, if it would be an "A" or "B" day, and if they should bring or buy lunch. (They ended up buying.) They kept checking their outfits, making sure everything was packed in their backpacks, and finally falling asleep. If only briefly.

I had my own plans for the first day. I was meeting a group of moms out to celebrate the return to our routines. Quiet houses for a few hours a day. Cooking in peace. Food lasting in our homes longer. No constant TV on. No double cleaning. And being able to run errands without extra company. And not being forced to entertain bored children. Every mom knows exactly what I'm talking about.

This year, I started shopping for me in celebration of the new school season. I treated myself to a pair of jeans for the first time in 20 years. A couple of sweaters and shirts. Three new pairs of earrings with matching bracelets and a new fall coat and hat.

As I was curling my daughter's hair, she said 'Mom, I'm going miss you. I love you.' I said that I loved girl. She gave me a scowl because I was smiling. 'I will miss you,' I replied. "I know you will she said and started to laugh. "It's hard to believe you with that smile on your face."

All I could think about was a return to finishing up my new book, writing my blog and column, and hanging out with other mom's this morning. Had to run a quick errand for my mom's birthday present; her birthday also was today. I had other tasks to do as well. I LOVE my children, but I love my sanity more. In a few minutes, the bus would arrive. My teen started her first day of high school an hour earlier. My tween was now the big kid in her primary school.

However, this morning, I was looking forward to having my house and my space back. :)
