No, he was a Deist.

"Deism has a lot to offer you! It also has a lot to offer society! Deism is knowledge of God based on the application of our reason on the designs/laws found throughout Nature. The designs presuppose a Designer. Deism is therefore a natural religion and is not a "revealed" religion. The natural religion/philosophy of Deism frees those who embrace it from the inconsistencies of superstition and the negativity of fear that are so strongly represented in all of the "revealed" religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam. (These religions are called revealed religions because they all make claim to having received a special revelation from God which they pretend, and many of their sincere followers actually believe, their various and conflicting holy books are based on.) When enough people become Deists, reason will be elevated over fear and myth and its positive qualities will become a part of society as a whole. Then, instead of having billions of people chasing after the nonsensical violence promoting myths of the "revealed" religions, people will be centered on their God-given reason which will lead to limitless personal and societal progress!"

although Christianity does have a history of violence, destruction, hate, envy and even lies.... My teachings are of compassion, wisdom, love, peace, truth. So to place religions off all kinds and put them in a pot, is a matter of opinion.

My moral and spiritual believes were past down to me from generation to generation... How I try to live my life is based on my spiritual being... faith, understanding and hope... So, I for one do not chase after "religion" ....

So, now .... Are you now introducing and promoting a new ((reintroducing)) religion to BIA....???????

In the eighteenth century, the prevailing character of French philosophy . . . was that of opposition to the received dogmas and the actual conditions in Church and State, and the efforts of its representatives were chiefly directed to the establishment of a new theoretical and practical philosophy resting on naturalistic principles. (Gesch. d. Philosophie, Berlin, 1901, III, 237)

Men like Voltaire, and even the materialistic Encyclopædists, exemplify a tendency of philosophic thought which has very much in common with what in England ended in deism. It had the same basis, the theory of knowledge propounded by Locke and subsequently pushed to an extreme point by Condillac, and the general advance of scientific thought. From Voltaire's criticisms of ecclesiastical organization and theology, his unwearying attacks upon Christianity, the Bible, the Church, and revelation, the tendency turned towards pantheism and materialism. Rousseau would have a religion of nature substituted for the traditional forms of revelation, and bring it, as he would bring philosophy and politics, to the point of view of individualism. Helvetius would have the moral system based upon the principle of present self-interest. And thus, as in England the logical development of deism ended in the scepticism of Hume, so in France it came to rest in the materialism of La Mettrie and Holbach.

Lord Herbert of Cherbury (1581-1648)

Lord Herbert, a contemporary of the philosopher Hobbes, was the most learned of the deists and at the same time the least disposed to submit Christian revelation to a destructive criticism. He was the founder of a rationalistic form of religion--the religion of nature--which consisted of no more than the residuum of truth common to all forms of positive religion when their distinctive characteristics were left aside. The profession of faith of Herbert's rationalism is summed up in the five articles given above. His principal contributions to deistical literature are the "Tractatus de Veritate prout distinguitur a Revelatione, a Verisimili, a Possibili et a Falso" (1624); "De Religione Gentilium Errorumque apud eos Causis" (1645, 1663); "De Religione Laici."

Because of the individualistic standpoint of independent criticism which they adopt, it is difficult, if not impossible, to class together the representative writers who contributed to the literature of English deism as forming any one definite school, or to group together the positive teachings contained in their writings as any one systematic expression of a concordant philosophy. The deists were what nowadays would be called freethinkers, a name, indeed, by which they were not infrequently known; and they can only be classed together wholly in the main attitude that they adopted, viz. in agreeing to cast off the trammels of authoritative religious teaching in favour of a free and purely rationalistic speculation. Many of them were frankly materialistic in their doctrines; while the French thinkers who subsequently built upon the foundations laid by the English deists were almost exclusively so. Others rested content with a criticism of ecclesiastical authority in teaching the inspiration of the Sacred Scriptures, or the fact of an external revelation of supernatural truth given by God to man. In this last point, while there is a considerable divergence of method and procedure observable in the writings of the various deists, all, at least to a very large extent, seem to concur. Deism, in its every manifestation was opposed to the current and traditional teaching of revealed religion.

so here lies anoter assertion towards the challenges of christianity.... interesting... my belief on religion.... your right to believe what one choses to believe... Everyone has a right not to believe and everyone has a right to chose his belief.... I do not believe my teachings are "TRUTH FOR EVERYONE" ONLY TRUTH FOR ME.... I'm happy with my God... ((or as Jamal would say my three Gods)... What ever Thomas Paine chose to believe... may he be resting in the bossom of his savior.

And more to the point, the Abrahamic religions all espouse a judgmental, or cruel, God, and we see the results around the world, here in the U.S., and indeed here on BIA. Jamal especially, but Jake also, spend much time talking about God's destructive purpose.

Irma I don't think it's brainwashing.... I think when anyone contradicts a persons belief it causes a sense of offense.... I do not try to impeed on anyone's belief... for Adam to place a philosophical spin on my spiritual ((theological)) teachings is not cool.... These disturbances are what causes disharmony on BIA....

Adam.... If I were to explain my teachings... GOD is a God of destruction.... Jesus Christ is a God of Mercy.... GOD is my creator... my father... whom I pray to.... Jesus Christ is the medium between me and God... so this is my teaching... God caused plaques... floods... famine... fires...

"

"Something more therefore is necessary than mere cry and wholesale assertion, and that something is TRUTH; and as inquiry is the road to truth, he that is opposed to inquiry is not a friend to truth. "The God of truth is not the God of fable; when, therefore, any book is introduced into the world as the Word of God, and made a groundwork for religion, it ought to be scrutinized more than other books to see if it bear evidence of being what it is called. Our reverence to God demands that we do this, lest we ascribe to God what is not His, and our duty to ourselves demands it lest we take fable for fact, and rest our hope of salvation on a false foundation.

Deism is a religious philosophy and movement that became prominent in England, France, and the United States in the 17th century. Deists typically reject supernatural events (prophecy, miracles) and divine revelation, along with holy books and revealed religions that assert the existence of such things. Instead, deists hold that correct religious beliefs must be founded on human reason and observed features of the natural world, and that these sources lead to belief in the existence of one God or supreme being.

Christianity is a monotheistic[1] religion centered on Jesus of Nazareth, and on his life and teachings as presented in the New Testament.[2] Christians believe Jesus to be the Messiah and God incarnate and thus refer to him as Jesus Christ. With an estimated 2.1 billion adherents in 2001, Christianity is the world's largest religion.[3] It is the predominant religion in the Americas, Europe, Oceania, and large parts of Africa. It is also growing rapidly in Asia, particularly in China and South Korea, and Northern Africa.[4]

Well we do have one thing in common with deists. We both believe in one God.

But what I don't understand how come a person couldn't believe in prophecy? This is what I don't understand. I mean a lot of the prophecys are fulfilled right

some by Jesus

So for instance the prophecy of Jesus dying becoming the human sacrifice so we would be saved.

1. God's salvation would reach the ends of the earth
Bible passage: Isaiah 49:6
Written: perhaps between 701-681 BC
Fulfilled: About 32 AD
In Isaiah 49:6, the prophet speaks of a servant of God who would be a light to Gentiles (non-Jews) so that God's salvation could reach the ends of the earth. Christians believe that Jesus is the fulfillment of this promise. The followers of Jesus helped spread Christianity about 2000 years ago. Christianity is unique in that it is among the first evangelical religions in history, and the first to be taken to people all over the world. Christians believe that salvation, forgiveness of sins and eternal life in heaven are available to anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as their savior: "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." - Romans 10:9-10 (NIV translation).

Deist posit a first cause, but they do not explore God's essence. They say that he created the word, THEN he left it alone. In God's case, there is no THEN. Everything is in the present. God not only creates; he maintains creatures in existence. Compare Him to a dynamo producing electricity. If the dynamo stops, the lights go out at once. If God stops maintaining you in existence, you simply disappear.

Deism is a system that eliminates religion, since (they say) we have no relationship with God. Deism is more of a moral system that says we must act in accordance with "nature", in other words according to our place in the universe.

Deism was popular among educated people around the time of the American Revolution. Many of the Founding Fathers were deists. But it seems that most of them belonged to an organized religion anyway.

Deism is a supreme act of disobedience.

How can one acknowledge a Creator but simultaneously reject the notion that the creation had a purpose?

Deists believed themselves to be rationalists and so bowdlerized the Bible (as Thomas Jefferson most famously did) to purge it of that which offended their Enlightenment era sensibilities. There is no difference between this act---a complete rejection of the fundamental nature of God and His love for mankind---and Lucifer's actions.

After all, true deists reject Christ, don't they? Why would the Creator take on the cloak of flesh and die for us, invisible hand that is all the deists claim He is?

Deists are theological nihilists. I suspect that had modern science been available to them and had they the true courage of their conviction most deists of the Founding Era would have been atheists today.

That is the logical next step of making your own mind your god.

David, I live in the modern age, and I believe I am Created because DNA is a program, and where there is a program, there must be a Programmer. To put it another way, I am a creator, because I was created in the image of the Creator.

Now, was Jesus raised from the dead? It could be, but I wasn't there to see it. Not having seen it doesn't make it not true, only an open question. Do I trust that the story of Jesus has come down to us unadulterated. How could I? The earliest parts of the New Testament were not written until 40 years after Jesus' death. After that, the Writings went through many hands, and also the Church Councils decided what was to be deemed Scripture and what was not. So what is the Word of God, and what the word of Man?

However, I can read the Bible, and discern the truths for myself. And I have no fear of Hell (nor do I believe it) because it is against Reason.

Irma, I like the way Wright spoke out against 911 and blasted that Psalm (151) about smashing the babies' brains against the wall. This is where we need to use our reason instead of blindly following the "Holy" Scripture.

lets eat
Defending our culture depends on our ability to identify who is its enemy and who is its friend. The more quickly we can determine if a visitor is tainted with values incompatible with our culture's, the easier it becomes to close the doors and call up our cache of weapons to be used in its defense. With so many varieties of people coming from different cultures, the job of identifying undesirable would be almost impossible without resorting to a simplified, though not always correct, method of categorizing people -- stereotyping. While still at a distance, a person exhibiting any qualities of a particular stereotype will be classified as friendly or hostile, and we will open or close our doors depending on that classification. And when those deemed hostile insist on banging on our doors or striking at our cultural walls, we will use violence to terrorize them into leaving us and our value systems alone. We use terrorism as a means of self-actualization.

Jake, here is the answer from the Founder and Director.

Hello Steve. Thanks for your email and interest in Deism and the World Union of Deists.

Regarding your question, no, the WUD is not a nonprofit. We are not a nonprofit largely for the problem your question brings up: we don't want to be beholden to anyone. Also, personally I see the tax-exempt status of religious organizations as a sign they are more concerned with cash than with ideals, which makes them hypocrites. Especially Christians since the Bible claims that Jesus himself paid taxes.

I hope this answers your excellent question. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding Deism and I'll do my best to answer them.

Progress! Bob Johnson

cYNTHIA , YOU SHOULD KNOW ME WELL ENOUGH TO KNOW "I" DO NOT BELIEVE IN RIGHT V WRONG AND ALL THINGS MUST BE IN BALANCE...I AM JUST LIKE YOU AND SO IS THIS BLOG IT IS ONLY ANOTHER RESORCE OF EDUCATION...

AND THE DAY TAHT AMERICA IS ABLE TO CALL THE KKK A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION AND WE SHOULD BURN THE SAINT JAMES VERSION OF THE BIBLE THEN WE ARE ACCEPTING BEING BRAINWASHED AWAY FOR THE GOD'S TRUTH...WHICH WILL ALWAYS PREVIENT PEACE ON EARTH AND GOOD WILL TOWARDS MANKND BY MANKIND BEACUE OF THIS NEED TO BE RIGHT V WRONG AND NOT STEP INTO THE OTHER PERSON'S SHOES.EXAMPLE...

AMERICA WAS CERATED BY DOING EVERY THING THAT THE BIBLE SAYS WE SHOULD NOT DO...SO WHY DO WE INSIST ON CALLING THIS A CHRISTIAN NATION...I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THE CHRISTIAN GOD SAYS KILL IN MY NAME WHEN THE TEN COMMANDMENTS CLEARLY STATES JUST THE OPPOSIT...

OR AM I WRONG OR AM I SAYING THIS ONLY BECAUSE I AM A NDB WHO RESPECT ALL MANKIND AS EQUAL AS WELL AS ALL REOIGIONS (SMILE) AND WITH THIS I SAY THSI COUNTRY COULD HAVE NEVER BECOME SOMETHING THAT THE KKK WANTED BECAUSE THEY ARE DOING THEIR WORK JUST AS THE TEAPARTY DOES AND THOSE WARS KILLING THE UNBORN IN THERI MOTHER'S WOMB AS NOT IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY HAVE GOD ON THEIR SIDE AND THE MUSLIMS DON'T...BUT THS IS A CHRISTIAN NATION AND THE REWARD FOR THIS IS HATING BLACKS AND KILLING BABYS IN THE MOTHER'S WOMB WHILE WE SIT AND TALK ABOUT ONE CAN NOT DO THIS BECAUSE IT IS AGAINST OUR CHRISTIAN ATION'S VALUES...OH BUT THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT CHRISTIANS...IS THE BRAINWASHINGS OR IS IT THE WORDS OF GOD THAT HAVE US ACCEPTING KILLING AS A SOCAL NORM IF THEY ARE NOT WHITE CHRISTIANS...
