The other day I was listening to a left wing talk show, and this right winger calls in. It’s interesting how they are allowed to call into left wing shows, but you're not going to get on with Limbaugh unless you prove yourself to be a mirror image of what he believes.
Anyway, this guy went down all the talking points, about how THEIR taxes have been raised (the sense of entitlement is amazing, even for them), the government has taken over the banks, car companies, Obama is a dictator passing laws over Congress and taking guns away, spending is out of control, business can’t function because of regulations, free speech is gone, etc. The host kept the guy on the line because, just like most people, we wanted to know why these people believe things that are clearly not true.
One by one, he asked this guy for examples, and he could not give any. After each one, the host told the guy the truth, and as he did, you could hear the sputtering deflation, just as if air was being let out of a balloon. And yes, it was HOT AIR. In the end he STILL clung to what he believed, and not what the facts are, even though during the call even he had to admit the facts didn't support his beliefs.
This just goes to show that, for these people, its not about the facts. Taxes have not been raised, the deficit hasn't gone up (any more than it has before Obama became president) the Constitution has not been changed and sharia law is not in place; Obama was born in this country.
And yet, according to them, Obama is a communist, all Americans are tea baggers, sharia law is in place right now, and the republicans will win in November and rule for a thousand years. And this is just as fantastic as everything else they believe.
They believe if they repeat it enough, and have their willing partners in the media do it as well, it will become true because people will think the election is a foregone conclusion and there’s no point in voting. But the fact is polls show the voters hold the republicans in even lower esteem than they do democrats.
A LOT of money is being spent on crazy tea baggers in this election. These are people so extreme as to be kept at arms length by the more extreme elements of the republican party. Counting on ignorance and the apathy of the voters, they are being made to look like world beaters in the media. The people who are funding them know that, once in power, they will gain their sanity just long enough to vote to turn the middle and working classes, and all their resources, over to them, lock stock and two smoking barrels. And they could give a rat’s behind the “color” of the person whose pockets the money is being siphoned out of.
The facts and truth are on our side; we just need to tell it. Realize what’s at stake. Don't believe the hype! Get out and vote. And take somebody with you.
