The Church Has My Voteþ (1094 hits)

Post by: Overseer Christopher J. Harris
The church has some problems. No question about it. I’ve been around the church most of my life. Actually, all of my life would not be a stretch. Interestingly enough, I’ve seen some of the best that the church has to offer and unfortunately, I’ve seen some of the worse that the church offers.
But I’m committed to the church. You may ask why? If I’ve seen all of that – why in the world would I sell out to this organization and be willing to serve it until my last days? That’s a good question and I’m willing to give you a straight-forward answer. First, let me tell you what else I’ve seen.

I’ve seen church members that take their faith serious and walk that out in their daily lives. I’ve seen Pastors have such an encounter with God that they live what they preach. I’ve seen choir members that were the same righteous people in public and in private. I’ve seen more preachers that were committed to their wives than I have seen the opposite. I’ve seen more Deacons support their Pastor’s than the opposite. I’ve seen church members that love people so much that they’ve given money, time, and their talents just to help someone that they’ve only met a few minutes ago. I’ve seen people cry together and laugh together. I’ve seen men connect with other men when otherwise there were walls of mistrust. I’ve seen women get restored when they’d decided they would never trust again. This list could also go on and on.
My vote is with the church.

I know it’s very interesting to mention the words church and vote in the same sentence in today’s culture. In many cases where voting takes place, the organization in question moves at the pleasure of the majority opinion. The only problem with majority opinion in the church is that many times it doesn’t always mesh with God’s opinion.

Without getting into a church policy or a church governance debate, I simply use the issue of public opinion as a link to encourage you that regardless of current public opinion regarding the church – the church is still the most God-endorsed, God-empowered, and God-enabled institution on the planet.

Today’s public opinion of both those outside and inside of the church is by and large not positive. It is a true statement that the credibility of the church many times is linked to those who represent it. And a few of those that represent it have not done a great job. But I am encouraged, because as an insider I know the good far outweighs what public opinion says. My vote is with the church because it’s Jesus’ bride and it is really supported in scripture as being a victorious body of people.

Jesus declared, “Upon this rock, will I build my church. And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

I firmly believe that the hope for the world today is God’s church and those uniquely tied to his church. I respect our government and its leaders. I respect many of our community agencies and the work that they are doing. I respect many of the philanthropic efforts that many are engaged in around our country and world, but the hope for the world today – is God’s church.

That’s the other reason why I’m sold out to the church. It doesn’t belong to any one person. It is God’s!

That’s not too hard to figure out. When you look at how uniquely designed the church is. That it spans over every continent and every nation. It includes every language, every race and creed. It includes every age and generation, every economic status. It includes every music influence, every gift and talent, and most of all, every personality. Only God could orchestrate and arrange such a phenomenal powerhouse.

Today, I renew my commitment to the last thing Jesus left before his transition back to the Father and the first thing that He’s coming back for – his victorious, influential, and powerful institution – the church. Will you vote with me?

Scripture Of The Day: "And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." - Matthew 16:18v (NKJV)

Tell me what you think of this post. Does the church have your vote. I haven't been a member of a church in over 17 years and even then it was for a very short time, but when I do visit a few churches I realize what I'm missing. Problem is no church that I have visited lately draws me enough to make me want to be a member. I guess I'm just stuck on Bishop TD Jakes church and have a problem with comparison. Hopefully I'll find one soon!

[That’s the other reason why I’m sold out to the church. It doesn’t belong to any one person. It is God’s!]

I commend Brother Harris you on the commentary and his zeal for the local Christian organization he's been so fortunate to have a standing membership with. I stated or phrased my accolade in the manner, because that is how I see many churches as organizations and businesses.

I wish I had good things to say about organized religion, but I don't because of the many experiences I've had. I honestly have to challenge people to listen carefully the next time a pastor talks or refers to the local church. The pastors I've encountered refer to the church like they own it (like a business), because they do. I've heard the pastors say "my church" not how I would say it when inviting someone to an event, but like they own it.

I'm sure that not everyone's had a bad experience with religion and not all pastors and churches are like the ones I've attended, but I think it would be a better policy to get into the habit of endorsing God rather than church organizations. Just my two cents.

I hear you sister Jen and I feel what you are saying, but let me say this. This human body is territorial and we consider things as our own. We even say my pastor like he belongs to self. those are the things that made me leave the church, listening to sisters talk about me a pregnant single mother, having no business in the church. What impressed me about that particular church 17 years ago, was that particular preacher came to me and asked why I had left so quickly and when I told him what happened, he invited me to come back for a service on the 1st of the following week. He announced that changes would be made, nobody owned the church including himself and he removed certain people from heads and said he would do this every 2 years so as to not cause this problem again and even though I left because of this situation, it made me see that because you are the head of something, it doesn't necessary mean you run it or know what is happening unless you stay connected to the congregation and not just the heads.
Yes the church is an organizations just as every religion or belief is an organization. It has a head and tail. It needs to be organized or conflict will arize. I've had bad experiences, yes that is so, but I know I will never give up on the church. Tried too many others and was always led back to the church.

@ Sister Anita
That was a real good thing the pastor did by inviting you back and that's what I meant by not all pastors or churches are like the one's I've encountered. Although I attend church, I'd rather continue to do what I've been doing since my "eyes have been opened" and that is continue to endorse God rather than church because God and the church are two very different concepts in my opinion. To know God, one doesn't have to attend a church, but to obey the command not to forsake the assembling together of the saints is why I go. Again thanks for sharing this blog.

Yes brother david , THE CHURCH!. Checked out a lot of others and God always led me back to the church. Its certain things I don't agree with but thats with all religions. Thats in everyday life, but when it came down to the basics the church has my heart and I need the church on occasion for deeper understandings that I feel I can only get from a church structure.

Great story.... Im struggling my self with my home church... the physical place... But my spiritual place... I believe good.. not perfect... and I try to live a life which is pleasing to GOD... but you know what frustrates me the most... I have a young pastor... he doesn't work... and the Church is always taking up money to get him this or give him that...

Come on.... If my church was a church you know like a ministry... someone there everyday then I can see the church memebers doing this.... but for a young man, with 4 kids ((all boys)) ... relying on the church to support him is.... wrong in my opinion.

Yes Sister Cynthia, I'm with you all the way on that. I believe thats a sorry excuse for a man to take a salary. Tell the man to get a job. He's got 4 hungry mouths to feed and the world is struggling and can't be supporting him. He should not be putting that off on the congregation. My mom said her church gives her a stipend, which she basically donates back to the church or invests in other things in the church, ex cleaning materials, hymnals, speakers of the house, learning material etc. She said she has her retirement salary and a husband, she don't need to take from the people who are making such great sacrifices themselves. I just heard of a pastor taking just 1 dollar from the church. He made his money from speaking at other churches, books and other stuff. I do think it was Rev. Martin Luther King. I don't even know where the notion of a salary came from. Its crazy, and the thing is the more you give the more they take. ex: Eddie Long, Creflo and many others. A shame!
