In a recent and amazing report from DonorsChoose.org, we are told that it all started with a phone call regarding the amount needed to fund all California based teachers’ wish lists. The result was a $1.3 million donation from the Claire Giannini Fund, which covered the cost of 2,223 projects for California based teachers and another $100,000 to be applied to teacher wish lists across the country.
The donation has been classified as one of the largest ever received by the DonorsChoose.org site to date and brings to bear the simple point of how the action of one person, or organization, can have a profound effect on the state of our education system.
Thanks to organizations like DonorsChoose.org, donors can financially support their choice of “projects”. Teachers and school staff post their needs on the site, and members can choose the amount they want to donate, as little as $1, to any particular post. Another option is to purchase a “Giving Card”, similar to a “Gift Card” except that you give to a friend and they can determine what project they want to support. The card is tax deductible and is a great way for local businesses to support their school.
While support in the amount provided by the Claire Giannini Fund are far from typical, it proves that there are a multitude of ways for corporate America, individuals, and the hundreds of non-profit organizations across the country to provide teachers and schools with money they need to provide a college education. With the mass budget cuts for schools across the country, our teachers and districts are in dire need of assistance from anyone willing to offer it. If you, your business or organization needs to find a charitable way to release funds before the end of the fiscal year, Donor’s Choose offers a choice of specific ways we can help our teachers and students.
