I believe in God the Almighty. I do not believe He has ever sent a message to man by anybody, or delivered one to him by word of mouth, or made Himself visible to mortal eyes at any time in any place. I believe that the Old and New Testaments were imagined and written by man, and that no line in them was authorized by God, much less inspired by Him. I think the goodness, the justice, and the mercy of God are manifested in His works: I perceive that they are manifested toward me in this life; the logical conclusion is that they will be manifested toward me in the life to come, if there should be one. I do not believe in special providences. I believe that the universe is governed by strict and immutable laws. If one man's family is swept away by a pestilence and another man's spared it is only the law working: God is not interfering in that small matter, either against the one man or in favor of the other. I cannot see how eternal punishment hereafter could accomplish any good end, therefore I am not able to believe in it. To chasten a man in order to perfect him might be reasonable enough; to annihilate him when he shall have proved himself incapable of reaching perfection might be reasonable enough; but to roast him forever for the mere satisfaction of seeing him roast would not be reasonable... even the atrocious God imagined by the Jews would tire of the spectacle eventually. There may be a hereafter and there may not be. I am wholly indifferent about it. If I am appointed to live again I feel sure it will be for some more sane and useful purpose than to flounder about for ages in a lake of fire and brimstone for having violated a confusion of ill-defined and contradictory rules said (but not evidenced) to be of divine institution. If annihilation is to follow death, I shall not be aware of the annihilation and therefore shall not care a straw about it. I believe that the world's moral laws are the outcome of the world's experience. It needed no God to come down out of heaven to tell men that murder and theft and the other immoralities were bad, both for the individual who commits them and for society which suffers from them. If I break all these moral laws I cannot see how I injure God by it, for He is beyond the reach of injury from me-- I could as easily injure a planet by throwing mud at it. It seems to me that my misconduct could only injure me and other men. I cannot benefit God by obeying these moral laws-- I could as easily benefit the planets by withholding my mud. (Let these sentences be read in the light of the fact that I believe I have received moral laws ONLY from man-- none whatever from God.) Consequently I do not see why I should be either punished or rewarded hereafter for the deeds I do here. (I'd like to thank WUD Deputy Director Jayson for this writing by Mark Twain. One of the great things about Deism is its lack of dogma. For example, Mark Twain did not believe in the intervention of any kind of Providence in human affairs. Some Deists, like George Washington, did and do believe that God probably does intervene through Providence but that Providence is "inscrutable" as Washington wrote. Likewise, some Deists believe there is a continuation for the individual after their body dies while some Deists do not. Both are Deists since the only qualifications to be a Deist is belief in God based on the application of your reason on the designs in Nature along with the rejection of unreasonable ideas. David, the twist/spin. AKA opinion?
Jake, first, the Hebrew for I AM THAT I AM, transliterated (with vowels added), is ehyeh asher ehyeh. The Hebrew in verse 15 "Thus you shall say to the Israelites, 'the LORD, the God of your ancestors...'" is where yhwh occurs, probably pronounced Yahweh, conventionally printed as LORD (all caps).
On to Mark Twain. You will notice he is the one who wrote the words in the body of the blog, followed by the editor's comments, clearly distinguished. You may also notice I did not state, in the body of the blog, what my beliefs are. I call myself a Deist, and you will notice in the editor's comments a definition for a Deist "...the only qualifications to be a Deist is belief in God based on the application of your reason on the designs in Nature along with the rejection of unreasonable ideas." This works for me, but does not comprise the entire body of my belief.
Onward to separate but equal. I don't know if you've seen it Irma, but David and Jake have also extended their authority to "The Reality of God in Man" blog, which belongs to neither of them, but where I am waiting for Steven's permission to continue explaining my beliefs that David and Jake are so anxious to hear. Steven may have gotten back to me by now, I will have a look.

Adam, in reading your blog I respect first your own indiviual belief. However, because you believe that God has never shown his presence is a personal belief to men or women, does not necessarily give any proof or means it isn'r so, but only that you believe it is not.
The power of God's Spirit is far beyond the understanding of man's own belief. To say for example many people do not believe in miracle works or miracles of anything. However, have no other explanation known except it was a miracle ----many are opted to believe it was an Act of God or and Act of God's power in the person. How coincidental can miracles be--theycannot be explained except it is in one's on belief. As people who do not belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, that no man ever died and came back to life, yet Christians truly believe it with all their hearts. Never seeing but wholly believing in it. Thusly the Word being God own, governs men who are immoral to help them become moral men and women who follow his laws and commandments. Fact remains, God has ways of showing himself, and each person or individual who sees his Living Spirit confess to it and believe what they saw, heard or witness in writing the Word of the Holy Scriptures.
In due respect, I believe... if one believes the Word was inspired by Godly men, his presence was among them even if they did not see his face or actual Body of Spirit he was made known by them in Spiritual witness of himself. This is what I believe and I also know as I bear witness that the Spirit of God is revealed to those who truly believe in him without doubt or hesitation.

God's word was written by men inspired by God. Somehow, God's Spirit was present and they confess to what they saw was real, and what they wrote was is truly from his Spirit.

David, I don't remember any racist rants. Perhaps something I said was considered racist but I don't know what that might be. Harry has told me I act like I'm superior to Black Americans, and I see how he could come up with that perception, but I don't even like the terms race, black, white. Especially race. Jake I believe in a Creator. I did study ancient Hebrew for a year, but that was a long time ago. Still I know something of it. Have you studied it?
As far as God inspiring prophets and visiting them, you can no more prove that he did than I can prove he didn't. Being written in the Bible is not proof of anything except that somebody wrote something. However, it seems reasonable to me that God visiting the ancients is a distinct possibility. But then we need to try and guess who God was that visited them. That is something I will talk about on Steven's blog.
As far as inspiration, I believe in that, because I am often inspired myself. And it is wrong for you to tell me what I believe or don't believe. What I can tell you is that we really don't know that much, and belief is a personal thing that is even more slippery than knowledge. But we should never mistake belief for knowledge. Most of what I believe, I would honestly have to say is more accurately termed, an educated guess. I am comfortable with that. I will have more to say when I answer Miisrael and comment on Steven's blog.

Sister Miisrael,
Let me say first that most of the blogs I put up I do so because I find them interesting and worth considering and talking about. If they are my own words then I will surely have a stronger opinion about them than if they are someone else's. In this case the words are Mark Twain's and the editor of the newsletter that I got them from. Some points I agree on, some I don't, and some I would wish to ask the author for clarification. But Mark-Samuel-Mark is no longer with us.
I understand just what your faith feels like, because I once had it myself. I am one of those about whom Paul writes, having once believed, and fallen away, the last state is worse than having never believed. But I could not reconcile the belief that if one does not believe, one would suffer eternal torment. There was my grandmother, I used to agonize over the idea that as much as I loved her and she me, that she would be suffering in hell forever, and I separated from her for all eternity. I also couldn't see the fairness and love of God in condemning all those who came before Christ, and all those of other beliefs, or who had never even heard the Word, suffering the same torment.
So I became an agnostic. But in the fall of 1988, I had a revelation, a very specific event and time, that freed my mind from confusion. It had all the power that the event that earlier had turned me into a born again Christian had. I believe in guardian angels, and have seen their power in answer to prayer. I have had numerous further revelations. I am best identified now as a Deist, but with a strong attachment to the Bible. I even think it not untrue to identify as a Christian, bet in a much narrower sense than commonly used. I see much wisdom in the teachings of Jesus, whoever he was, or even if the words attributed to him are actually someone else's. I don't care much at all for Paul, and think that what is commonly known as Christianity is much more the following of Paul's teachings.
I know I have not shaken your faith one iota, nor would I wish to.
