It is appropriate to use the term Jews to refer to the Israelite community begining in 722 B.C.E. Prior to this date, the term had a more narrow meaning (first refering to members of the tribe of Judah, then to inhabitants of the Israelite Kingdom of Judah).
Following the death of King Solomon in the 10th century, the Israelite kingdom split into two. Israel was in the north; Judah was in the south. In 722, Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom and deported the population. As a result, the community descends from the Israelites who loved in the Kingdom of Judah. This is why members of the community are called Jews and the religion is called Judaism.

Israelite is a reference to a descendant of the man Israel/Jacob. Any one can be a Jew regardless of heritage.
Nine of the tribes of the Israelites were NEVER identified as Jews, but in the divided kingdom, the 9 tribes of the north were identified as Israel and they were the enemy of the Jews.. split tribes of the kingdom of Judah.

You must look at the actual words. The European word 'Jew' is NOT a word that gives the same meaning that it replaces in the European text.
Esther 8:17 ... the Jews

And many of the people (non Israelites) of the land became
* Jews (yaw-had.. to become Jewish)
Do you think these non Israelite/Persians made Israel/Jacob their ancestor by "conversion"
An Israelite is always a physical descendant of the man Israel. Non Israelites can make themselves 'Jews'
The same European word 'Jew' which has two different meanings.
Of course the Persians could do NOTHING to make Israel their ancestor.

NO scripture word translated to the European word Jew, identifies the tribes of Reuben, Simeon, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun or Joseph.
The European word "Jew" appears in no context in the time of Abraham or Moses. The word 'Jew' appears ONLY after Solomon's transgressions in which the kingdom was divided.
The three tribes which were identified by the word Yhuwdiy (not Jew) were Judah, Levi and Benjamin and the capital of their kingdom was in Judah/Jerusalem.
The 9 tribes which retained the name of their ancestor Israel are NEVER identified under any of the words translated to Jews. These 9 tribes of Non Jews had their capital in Samaria.
Today there are endless thousands converting to Judaism. They will be called Jews. With in a few generation their descendants will believe they are 'descendants of Jews', when in fact they are no more than descendants of European converts.
In the scriptures the words translated to Jew only identify a subset of 3 tribes and Jew excludes 9 tribes of Israel.
Today the word Jew is the identification of a multitude of descendants of European converts.
In the book Kings, you will find the tribes that continued to identify themselves as Israel, fought in bloody battles against the subset who called themselves "Jews"
Some Chinese are bald, but the word bald does NOT identify one as a Chinese. A fraction of the Israelites were under the subset of 'Jews' and NON-Israelites were under the subset of 'Jews', while 9 of the tribes of Israel are never identified as Jews, but in bloody battles ISRAEL fought against JUDAH/JEWS.
