A RECENT REPORT STATES THE FACT THAT BLACK VOTERS ARE “STRATEGICALLY SITUATED IN 2010 TO HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT.” SAID REV. JOSEPH LOWERY: “IN 2008 WE CHANGED THE GUARD. NOW WE MUST GUARD THE CHANGE.” The president and fellow Democrats have taken a page from the Republican playbook. They’re unabashedly using racial-solidarity politics to animate voters. In this case, the Democrats’ appeal is to black voters, the most unwavering portion of President Obama’s base, and the message is simple: The president is under attack, and black voters must mobilize to protect him. The Democratic National Committee is spending an unprecedented $3 million on advertising aimed at African-Americans for the midterms this year. As part of that effort, the committee has cut a new radio ad featuring the Rev. Joseph Lowery, the civil rights leader, that outlines the threat and the call to action: “When young people took to the streets, we elected our first African-American president. Right now, there are those doing everything in their power to block the president’s agenda. And that’s why we’re counting on you to vote. In 2008, we changed the guard. This year, we must guard the change.” Other ads, on black radio and in black newspapers, simply extol their audiences to “stand with President Obama.” These ads aren’t about policy. They’re personal appeals on behalf of the president. You don’t have to be engaged to get it. This November you’re voting for Obama, again. As Politico noted this week, “the White House has hesitated to cast the midterm elections as a referendum on President Barack Obama, except when it comes to one key constituency: African-American voters.” This strategy could prove extremely effective. A report issued Thursday by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies outlines the fact that black voters are “strategically situated in 2010 to have a major impact” because (1) there is “a significant number of black voters in the states and districts where many of the most competitive elections will be held” and (2) “there is a president who is very popular with African-Americans and who is under attack from Congressional Republicans.” And Friday, The Washington Post reported that a poll by that newspaper, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University found that “80 percent of black Democrats are as interested or more interested in the midterms than they were in the 2008 presidential election.” A large black turnout next month could prove decisive and upset the predictions of most pundits. If blacks do turn out in record numbers, it would almost certainly be because they are drawn out by their devotion to Obama, a devotion he’s counting on. As the president told an audience last week at Bowie State University, a historically black college, in Maryland: “I think the pundits are wrong. But it’s up to you to prove them wrong. Don’t make me look bad, now.”

It doesn't take a whole lot of courage to stand up here on BLACK IN AMERICA in favor of President Obama--since African-Americans are his most loyal supporters.
As an admirer and supporter of our President and his vision for the nation, I would like to see his policies continue and all the initiatives started under his administration maintained. I urge all of you folks out there to VOTE to continue his agenda on election day, wherever you may live.
You know that his policies are coming under ferocious challenge. As Rev. Lowery has said: "IN 2008 WE VOTED TO CHANGE THE GUARD. NOW WE NEED TO GUARD THE CHANGE."

Rich, it's the role of the legislature to legislate. But we have become a nation that would rather have a King than a President. We are not electing a President this election. We're electing The People's representatives in Congress, and State Governors. What ever happened to State government, or is it all about the Feds now? And it is a good thing for the Democrats to play the race card?

I love Rev. Lowery, but I don't know if he's awae that all the peoples of different ethnic background elected President Obama and the "Black" vote alone can't re-elect him. He (President Obama) is the people's President not the President to Blacks alone.

What is at stake the direction of the nation. The Republicans are committed to reversing and undoing every single positive initiative enacted into law by our federal legislature, including Health Care Reform, Financial Industry Reform and many other laws that actually help ordinary people.
If you want a preview of what is likely to happen when REpublicans take power, look at New Jersey. Their Republican governor has just rejected the largest infrustructure improvement project in the nation, a second train tunnel to Manhattan from NOrth Jersey, which is deperately needed to create jobs, encourage new industry and business and ease the ridiculous NY-NJ commute.
The state of New JErsey is only footing one third of the total cost and they have already been given millions to get the project started. Cancelling now means New JErsey will have to repay the FEderal Govenment.
What sense does that make?
The governor, true to his small government philosophy, feels that large projects will cost too much. Sure they will. But sometimes large projects, like bridges, tunnels, and putting a man on the moon guarantee that their long term benefits far outweigh the cost.
You are correct in pointing out that we are voting for Congress. But it is the agenda of the party in power that we need to be careful of. The Democrats have been busy cleaning up the royal mess these same Republicans have left us--they need the opportunity to finish the job--or at least get another two years to make some progress.
That is why this election is so crucial.

Rich, let me post once again these words from our Nation's first President, from his farewell address on leaving office. (I got an astounding 4 hits on the originally posted blog, apart from my own.) Pay particular attention to 23.
20 I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the state, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party, generally.

Of coruse, we should all pay attention to what Geroge Washington says about the danger of politcal parties and partisanship.
However--it is sad but true--anyone seeking elective office in today's climate will be resoundingly DEFEATED unless that individual is willing to fight for his beliefs. IN other words, political partisanship is a necessary tool in order to earn the job a politocian seeks.
It is naiive to believe otherwise.
President Obama has gone on record for his post-partisanship above and beyond the call of duty. He was totally rebuffed by the other party. He has no choice but to fire back with the same hyper partisanship that is attacking him. If he fails to do it, he will be politically destroyed.
That's just the way it is.

I'm siding with Brother Adam partially because we both think the two party system sucks! The Democrats aren't really doing all that great of a job working with their own Democratic President besides its just going to be more of the same as long as this two party system continues. In Canada, there are at leat 4 other parties besides Conservative and Liberal so the ruling party goes along with the Prime Minsiter's agenda. What if the States could have an election called anytime to oust a sitting party mbr? How would that have worked when former President Bush was in office? Perhaps we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now. Hmmm??

I understand what Rev. Lowery has a long history of fighting for civil rights and injustices for minorities, but with due respect if President Obama was counting on the Black votes alone, he would have never been the first sitting African American president of the United States of America. We need to do more than support someone along party lines and color lines but ensure that we know the issues that affect our communities the most and educate ourselves and others about the impact of detrimental outcomes.

I believe that what we currently have in better than going back to more of the same policies and procedures that got us in this economic mess with the former ruling party. I for one agree with the Republican Gov. of NJ that we don't need the improvement cash for having more congestion and people come into Jersey. I think the trains and subways work well and that people should utilize them more. I however would like the Gov. to fix those God-Aweful jug handles~~ ugh!

Rich, that's just the way it is, unless we do something about it. We always have the choice to do something about it whether we are successful or not depends on our initiative, and our stamina. We always need to work within the means available at the moment, which is why I will vote the Republicans, and the one Independent available to me. The Republicans to balance against the Democrats, not because I am in agreement with them, but because I am in disagreement with the Democratic control. The Independent, more importantly, because I am opposed to both Republican and Democrat, and here at least, I can vote my true opposition.

Interesting take on your NJ governor's decision to block progress.
However, it does not take into account that many thousands of people commute to their jobs from north Jersey into Manhattan. The only option for them is to take the Path train in Hoboken--or drive. This causes famous and infuriating traffic jams on every JErsey to Manhattan crossing.
If north JErsey had train access it would reduce the train and car traffic on every other crossing option and provide greater access to companies that wanted to relocate and move into New JErsey.
A state-of-the-art transportation system does wonders for the economy. It will create thousands of jobs--put many New JErseyans to work for a decade--and spur greater commercial development for your state.
Rejecting the tunnel will actually COST the state millions since they will have to pay back the funds granted for that purpose.
So the downside of your Governors's decision is--loss of jobs, loss of commercial expansion, increased frustration for commuters AND you all would have to PAY for the privilege!!
In my opinion, it is a very short-sighted decision that also effects New York residents since it deprives us of an alternate means to enter your wonderful Garden state.
So, I would have to respectfully disagree with you and your esteemed governor.

I looked at the issues carefully, regardless of party affiliation, especially Education. Some of the Republicans don't even have it as a specific issue on their agenda. But then the Democrats solution is to throw money at it. None of them seem to know how to really solve the problem. So I think the problem remains with the community. I would like to pursue a M. Ed. in Secondary Education, and this means working within the system. But it least I would make my own tiny impact.I have ideas that go beyond working within the system. We don't need to do just one or the other.

Clark, I looked into all the candidates and the Republicans are not uniform on the issues you mentioned. There are major differences on these issues in the Republican candidates for House vs. Senate. Also, if the Republicans gain seats, that doesn't mean they gain control. There will still be plenty of Democrats. In addition the House and Senate are independent, and my Representative will not vote the same way as my Senator. And Obama is still President. All this to me means a balance of power, which is as it should be.
I can't say it loud enough I guess. This mess is not the result of government so much as natural economic forces. There has always been a cycle of boom and bust, greed and fear. The bust followed the boom. As big as the boom was, so is the bust. Obama and the Democrats got control because of the bust, and now they are going to loose control because of the bust.
The real problems are caused in common by both parties. In particular, our Foreign Policy and the Federal Reserve. I will look up and find out just how many Democrats voted for the wars, and just how many defeated Audit the Fed. I don't think the percentages will differ much from the Republicans.
I wish I had all the choices that Irma does, but all the other candidates had to withdraw because of underhanded legal challenges from the Ruling Parties.

Why can't people live where they work?
Because they live where their home is--and they work where they can find a job.
People need to be free to move around as they see fit. It is not realistic or even the American way to mandate where people can or can't work.
I live on Staten Island--I work (part-time) in Manhattan. The commute is a drudge--and soemtimes I have to go through New Jersey to enter Manhattan. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Most of the commuters who live in Jersey work in Manhattan. That is the reality of the situation and it isn't going to change anytime soon.
But it can become easier--and if it does, it will be an economic boon to New Jersey as well as New YOrk. That is why leaders from all over the political spectrum worked to secure funding for the project and actually get it going.
I have a feeling it is going to move ahead--the Governer will fined a way to make it happen. IF he doesn't he will make too many Jersey voters very unhappy with him.

So true. And Democrats tend to tack rightward. Witness the mad rush away from their courageous and principled health care votes. Witness the rush to support the Bush War agenda.
I predict that if the Republicans do gain power in Congress, many cowed Dems will fall all over themsevles to become a sort of "Tea Party" lite, angling to curry favor with the independent voters who are angry. We are seeing that now.
I can't see the Democrats holding to party discpline as rigidly as the Republicans famously do. But if the GOP overreaches, what we are likely to see is legilstive gridlock. The nation's problems will not get solved and in 2012 people will be angrier.

It is not uncommon for recent Presidents to lose congress in the middle of their first term.
It happened to Clinton and he made it work--he was re-elected handily, campaigning against a Republican congress that shut down the government.
