In the Presidential election of 1964 Republican Barry Goldwater got clobbered. It was total destruction for the Republicans.
Goldwater managed to win only his own state plus five in the Deep South.
But...something important had changed.
The south voted Republican for the first time since the Civil War. In 1952 and 1956, for the Eisenhower landslide, the Solid South was the only section of the country to vote Democratic.
WHAT HAPPENED???
How did Goldwater suddenly manage to flip the South in 1964?
What else was going on in 1964?
The Civil Rights Act. And Barry Goldwater was against it.
