Prior to meeting Bratman, Aguilera had been rumored to be romantically involved with "Total Request Live" host Carson Daly. She was also in a serious relationship with backup dancer Jorge Santos, who toured with her and worked on her music videos when they started dating in 2000. They broke up in September 2001, but the two still worked together throughout 2002, when she met music marketing executive Bratman through her management company.
Bratman and Aguilera dated for several years before becoming engaged in February 2005. "When I got to the last box, there was a ring in it," Aguilera told People.com about their romantic engagement, which included boxes of gifts, flowers and a poem. "He got down on one knee and said, 'Will you do me the honor of being my wife?' I've been floating ever since."
They later married in November 2005 in a lavish ceremony in Napa Valley.
Aguilera released her Back to Basics album in 2006, which she noted was influenced by their relationship. "I wanted to make it light and easy for people to dance to and sing along to, so the whole song is based on feel-good elements of soul and blues and jazz," she said. "Lyrically, I just got married, so it's about someone in particular, but it's all about feeling good and not taking anything too seriously."
The two then had a son, Max Liron Bratman, in January 2008. Aguilera shared that she and Bratman were very excited about expanding their family. "I'm hoping to have started a beautiful family with my husband!" she said. "He's thrilled! He's just great."
In fall 2008, Christina released her greatest hits album, Keeps Gettin' Better, which she said was heavily inspired by Max. "It's such a special time for me, being a new mom, releasing this [album] the first year of my son's birth," she explained. "I'm looking forward to the next 10 years, which is partly why I named the album, Keeps Gettin' Better, 'cause it does."
While promoting her latest album, Bionic, earlier this year, Aguilera didn't give any hints about her breakup. Instead, she talked about their "naked Sundays." But when she performed on the "American Idol" finale in May, the singer teared up during the breakup ballad, "You Lost Me." Also in May, Aguilera canceled her summer tour, citing a busy promotional schedule.
Since then, she has remained relatively low-key before she gears up to release her feature film "Burlesque." As the 29-year-old promotes her role as a young ingénue working in a nightclub, perhaps she'll reveal how this latest personal development influenced her yet again.
