Harvey B. Gantt Was Elected Charlotte North Carolina's First Black Mayor, On November 8, 1983.
Born In Charleston, SC In 1943, Gantt Attended Clemson University, In 1963. He Was The First Black Admitted To The School And Received A Degree In Architecture. He Later Went To MIT, Where He Got His Master's In City Planning.
Gantt Served On The Charlotte City Council From 1974 - 1983. He Was Charlotte's Mayor From 1983 Until 1987. He Staged Two Unsuccessful U.S. Senatorial Campaigns Against Jesse Helms -- One In 1990 And 1996.
Today Gantt Runs A Successful Architectural Firm, Gantt Huberman Architects, He also remains active in politics -- having served on the North Carolina Democratic Executive Council, the Democratic National Committee and as chair of the National Capital Planning Commission..
