ARE YOU A SUFFERER OF THE HOLIDAY BLUES ? (304 hits)

There was a time I was. Holidays were suppose to be a joyous and happy time. A time for family and closeness of relationships. But due to a very broken heart I felt depressed. Over many years, I suffered deeply with every holiday long days of holiday blues. The relationship was unruly to a heart like mine--- that loved so deeply.

How did I recover?

I didn't get professional help; but I urge others that are dealing with depression of a broken heart to if they feel it hasn't or doesn't get any better. No, I just dealt with the pain and with God I kept hope until finally all the pain was gone. This took great faith and a huge amount of trusting God. Many times I did things to fill in the gaps. Some things didn't make me very proud, but I was awaken to keep the strong belief that God would see me through it. Now, I approach the holidays with vigor and renewal.

So many people are affected by depression..

This is true. There are many levels of depression and many reasons a person may have these feeling of loneliness, usefulness and heavy anxieties around holidays. Those who have family around them should really appreciate their blessing. You are right, the holidays affect many people deeply, if they are alone, it makes them feel more alone. Here I have my family I was born into, but it doesn't substitute for being near my kids and grandkids. Still, we should be thankful for those we have around us, and be sensitive to those without family or in many cases, even friends.

Jake the sadness is very real. Often holidays are the worst times for many sufferers. I think that spending time with love ones help with the lonely feelings as Adam noted. There too, is healing in time alone, but I found much praying and time was a real healer for me. If one is feeling this way often love and feeling wanted helps. I urge anyone who feel this deep sense of being all alone to take time to talk to someone. Just expressing your feelings heals your outlook to overcome.
