It is my belief that in the early days of mankind, stories were created to counter the fear of nature, and to conquer the horror of death. As mankind spread around the earth, these stories (which are very similar in all cultures) traveled with us. I think all religions borrow from these early stories, which undoubtedly go back to the stone age. When writing was invented, they were written down, in Egyptian hieroglyphics, in Persian cuneiform, and eventually in Hebrew. Certainly the story of the Great Flood in the old testament is taken from the chronicles of Gilgamesh in ancient Persia. We like to think that Bible stories are original, but clearly, the Hebrews borrowed from the Egyptians, the Persians, and the Canaanites. The story of Jesus has elements from the story of Horus (Egypt), Mithra (Persia) and Krishna (India). Virgin births, resurrection of the dead, and gods come to earth in human form are rife throughout antiquity. Believe what you will. In my opinion, all religious texts are works of fiction created by a terrified early man.
