Black History Month
Throughout the month of February, all over the country, African Americans will be honored for their past, present and future achievements. To help celebrate Black History month, Chicago Sky athletes would like to share their thoughts about what Black History month means to them:
Amanda Lassiter:
What does black history month mean to you?
Black history month is extremely important to me. It gives everyone in the world a chance to learn more about the African American struggles, what we had to over come, and how far we have come in today's society.
Who has been the most inspirational African American figure in your lifetime?
Every African American athlete in the world has been an inspiration to me, there was a time where we were not able to be the athletes that we are today. I appreciate the athletes who started African Americans on this long journey, and also the one's who are continuing on. The fact that I am able to play professional basketball in today's world inspires me to do my best every time I step on the court. Without the struggles of the ones before, I wouldn't be who I am today.
Historically speaking, what is the biggest event that has taken place that has changed your life the most when thinking about your heritage?
In my mind the civil rights movement is the biggest event that has taken place. African Americans had a voice that needed to be heard, and there were people willing to risk their lives to make sure that this happened.
Candice Dupree:
What does black history month mean to you?
Black history month makes me more aware of my heritage. I tend to sit back and reflect on all of the things that African Americans have gone through and done, and how different the world would be if not for them.
Who has been the most inspirational African American figure in your lifetime?
The most inspirational African American in my lifetime would have to be Nelson Mandela. He spent years in prison in South Africa to fight for both his and ours equality. His determination and drive showed that he wasn't willing to give up on his beliefs and rights.
Historically speaking, what is the biggest event that has taken place that has changed your life the most when thinking about your heritage?
The biggest event that has taken place would have to be the civil right's movement. So many African Americans fought to gain equal rights for those that came after them, this means a lot to me.
Coretta Brown:
What does black history month mean to you?
It is the one month out of the year that my people are recognized for all of their accomplishments.
Who has been the most inspirational African American figure in your lifetime?
All are inspirational to me in their own way, from Martin Luther King Jr to Maya Angelou to Doug Williams.
Historically speaking, what is the biggest event that has taken place that has changed your life the most when thinking about your heritage? <[> Once again, I can't name just one, there have been so many. Every event that took place has had an impact on my life in some way. Whether it be Rosa Park refusing to sit in the back of the bus or Althea Gibson becoming the first African American to win Wimbledon and the US Open in 1957.
